Emmerson used to work as a contract diver. Mainly cleaning and maintenence on underwater equipment, whichever company paid the most. He wouldn't call diving a passion, just a talent he ran with until... y'know... his arrest.
"But how did Emmerson end up in prison!?" Before everything, he was a very bitter man. Being so far out in sea, diving terrifying depths, just to get a paycheck to spend on all his equipment, so he can keep doing his job that he doesn't even like that much- it reaches a breaking point. It takes one guy, a few heckles, and too many beers in your system to ruin all of that.
At least he had it easier than John. They were put through the wringer- lying, stealing, cheating, fighting, doing the absolute worse to themself to run away from their problems. But they could never fill that gap in their soul and in some way, they ended up at the doorsteps of a church. Only then, could John break down his walls and rebuild himself.
Tobias I've lowk been vague about them. Probably because I never thought of a proper backstory for him. Idk he just really liked exploring abandoned buildings and looking for ghosts. The mooost I would say is that he was a very anxious child with a huge imagination, but his awesome aunt (Blue Light) taught him not to be so scared of the dark idk im kinda making bullshit up LOL

When Ivan came out his father didn't really accept it, but didn't really care cause "it's just a phase" so it was a constant fight for Ivan to prove himself to his father that he's infact a guy. So he was transphobic but he had a job so he lowk didn't care and also he's dead.
"What abt his mom" she was more accepting but ignorant to how to support Ivan. I.e the classic "outing Ivan out to random people for no reason" and "refusing Ivan to get medical care."

Jim- I don't think Jim would have a full grasp of his identity because he lacks the social experience + deep introspection to understand who he is. Even so, demisexual is the best way to describe his perspective on relationships. "Love at first sight" does not click with him. He needs time with that somebody to feel a closer connection. "Do people really meet on the first date? With a complete stranger?? And get married??? I can't do that!!!" You don't have to Jim... eh, he'll figure it out soon.
Thomas- I've been told Thomas is canonically aromantic which I've absorbed the fact into my being. Yeah aro Thomas seems fitting. He's a friendly guy, cares about people close to him, even a family man. Thomas is satisfied with the relationships he has, something romantic has never crossed his mind. Idk tho he'd probably kiss a few guys drunk at a bar so he lowk bisexual.
Ivan- I won't harp on gay Ivan bcs we ALL played Bad Things ur not slick bro. Yeah so the trans thing. yeah thats right noobadoor & the noobs r here now. noobador's the landlord of the apartments. the man's had a bizarre career line beforehand: train conductor, pro-wrestler, to now. he lives up in the flats as well, along with his nephew and niece, trying to provide a good life for them.

the two get up to all kinds of mischief in the apartments. their uncle their "boss" makes them run on "patrols" around "the base" to "put them to work." what that work entails is up to them, noobador doesn't care so long he can get his paperwork done in peace.
