everyone shut up. look at how cool shadow is
as a kid/teen, i wasn't allowed to dress how i wanted. dressing in-line with the scene subculture was something my mother refused to let me do. i wasn't allowed to buy clothes like that, i wasn't allowed ripped pants or fishnets, gloves at all outside of winter were a no-no forget fingerless gloves, i finally tried to get into kandi at least in my final years of highschool and it was called childish by her up until when she realized how intricate it can get. i was barely even allowed to buy music discs i actually liked, the only one i managed to get was a single linkin park cd. i had to go through pretty much my entire life looking just the emo part of scenemo, and even that got me made fun of by my mother.
i'm an adult now, and i dress how i want. i'm still not able to be 100% "obviously scenemo" since i've been building up my wardrobe slowly, my job doesn't pay the best and i have other things to worry about.
despite all this though, i did not 'become' scenemo when i was an adult. i was always scenemo, i was always scene. a subculture is more than just it's clothes, and nothing can strip that from you. regardless of your real life situation, regardless of how you dress, it does not control what subcultures you're in.
fashion is absolutely a huge thing in scene culture, but it's not only fashion. you're not a poser if you say you're scene but cannot dress the part.
