What is Salsa?
In this famous video, Izzy Sanabria explains exactly how this multitude of influences became such a complete and legendary musical genre.
This is salsa: a mixture of sounds, cultures, genres - not for nothing it means "sauce"
In Cuba 1933, Ignacio Piñeiro was recording "Échale salsita" when, in the middle of the song, he yells "salsa!" to indicate the increase in rhythm and the mixing of sounds that is typical of this genre.
Izzy Sanabria was a graphic designer from Puerto Rico who moved to the Bronx in New York City during his childhood. Although he never played any instruments, he is considered very important for the popularization of salsa and is often credited with coining the term. He was also a master of ceremonies during many salsa concerts.

Los Orientales de Paramonga - La Danza del Mono (1972)
Taking you into the weekend with some wah-wah guitar driven, psychedelic Peruvian cumbia.
Los Orientales De Paramonga - Melaza (1977)
I don’t normally take requests. Of course, I rarely get them. Here’s another cool song by Los Orientales - melaza is Spanish for molasses.
Los Orientales de Paramonga - El Botecito (1973)
I haven’t posted any Amazonian cumbia for a bit - here you go. El Botecito refers to a little boat.
Los Orientales de Paramonga - La Guinda de Hector (197?) Got to have some Amazonian cumbia every now and then. Los Orientales…
