Born Tyrone Smith long before coming into the music world as EQ Why started on the dance floors with the crews and troupes. He got his start in Chicago’s “Phase 2” from the urban area of Chicago in the Ida B. Well’s housing projects where he was raised. Going to the parties where other crews would be such as The Rink, and the House of Kicks he wasn’t allowed to go to other places because of his young age. Dancing and growing up listening to tracks by DJ Deeon, DJ Slugo, DJ PJ, DJ Clent, and RP Boo he was easily influenced that he wanted to become someone who can also produce his own style of tracks and wanted to be a part of this art form. EQ Why started his music career in the summer of 2001 when he was introduced to a program called "Fruity Loops" by DJ Roc which allowed him to create & produce his own music already knowing what it was but wasn't taught how to make his own music at this point he was just at the ground level of his career and now more interested of becoming a DJ & producer. All summer long of 2002 he would watch his affiliate DJ Kash work the program and make tracks. He would also teach him how to slice up samples, vocal edits and how to master the tracks. At the same time figuring out the sound he wanted for himself and the style that would identify him. Slicing up drums and sample bits from other artist’s songs, and downloading free drum kits was not enough for him. He had to figure his own way out. By the year of 2003, struggling and working hard to get a fan base he had a little buzz in his area of where he was from Ida B. Wells. He was known as DJ T.Y. from the nick name he had growing up T.Y. Acknowledging that there was a DJ by the name of "DJ T.Y." already he didn't want any confusion of getting mixed up so he changed his name to "DJ T-Why". He was now more unique and didn't get confused with the other artist and people knew who he was. Now this was his chance to finally get on the right track. Within the years of 2004-2005 he had a buzz on the local area and was now better on his track production and finally got his name out by pushing his cd’s in school or where he could. Not having any money for real equipment so he borrowed and from other DJ's and made due with whatever else he had. Selling his homemade mix tapes, getting parties and orders for custom tracks helping him become a success. He was getting a few dollars here and there but nothing major. He was starting to learn the industry more and more every day and finally took a more serious approach. Now by the year of 2006-2007 he is finally recognized and is an upcoming DJ/Producer in the new era of Juke and Footwork. He has had more success working with artists and events from Chicago such as Tha Pope, Soulja Boy, & Walacam, The Rink, early in his career and is now taken more seriously. He is now waiting for his chance to be recognized as one of the greatest DJ's/Producers in the history of Juke and Footwork and help put Chicago on the map. Few years roll pass and it’s the year of 2010-11 still dropping street mix tapes in malls across Chicago. Producing custom tracks for footwork battle crews all over across the city and suburbs while dropping various EPs and LP’s on DJ Godfathers label Juke Trax Online such as “Banging the Box” and “Radio Juke” series. By the year of 2012 he is now being featured on a compilation from the overseas label Planet MU with tracks “Orbits, Juice & Finished” boosting his status to a higher level and fan base worldwide. By the year of 2012 he decided to change his name from DJ T-Why to EQ Why for personal and various reasons. Still trying to find himself and also at this point there was a big issue of people calling themselves DJ’s and thing of that nature. Just to remove himself from that problem he had with the changing of the name. He now has releases on Moveltraxx, Booty Call Records, Duck N Cover, and Booty Tune via overseas. Still having the ability to keep his following from his name change was a big of a deal. He has had much success and wants to be recognized as one of the greats in this history of juke and footwork.
