The view from my bedside table. That one in the middle--the one that says "Great Plains Institute"--that's my graphic design work. No, I haven't kept graphic design work I did six years ago on my bedside table for the past six years. I put it there a few months ago as a reminder to myself that I actually did it. Let's face it--the last six years have been increasingly hard for people in the creative industries. As well as for people in the position of making social change. It can be easy, with good work opportunities few and far between, to forget who you are and what you've done. To let people negate the importance of the things you've done just because the funding and political will is no longer there to employ your skill set. It can almost seem easier to tell people, when you've been unemployed or underemployed for long enough in a field they've never heard of, that you've spent your entire adult life in halfway houses working at sheltered workshops than to actually attempt to explain the truth to them. Imagine the space program was completely defunded through an act of congress and society decided as a response to pretend that it never existed in the first place. If you were an astronaut, or in Mission Control, what would you tell people had been your job for most of your life? It is actually kinda like that with full time nonprofit marketing and communications. It's a shrinking field that was poorly understood and only marginally accepted too begin with. That's why i put that report on my bedside table. To remind me that I have done good work in the past, that has done something positive for people, and that someday, I will do so again.
