Here you can see the finished painting for now. Personally, I think that its turn out good and I am happy with it I layered up a lot and tried to add depth as I go and with each layer of paint that dried.
And at this point I decided to go for a simplistic face for no because I didn’t have the paint and the equipment necessary to try and build up the impasto for the face, I think I am going to get oil paint as soon as I am able to and go over the painting with oil paint again adding more texture more depth and finish up the face.
Here my idea for this painting is a man triumphant steering out of the cloud at the other side of the darkness at dawn light starting come up on him. This reflects my journey through out 2020-2021 and how I felt I was in a really dark place for many months and bad things kept happening and my raising his head above the clouds is a symbol of my getting up and looking forward to the future. And the reason I wanted to do an abstract impasto on the face was because I was I want the paints interacting with each other the darker tones and the lighter tone to represent my though of how I had dark though and I had good thoughts and it is okay to have the they are a part of us and they are what makes us who we are, and as another idea I would we are who we are because of out thoughts and not how we look.
Now this painting will server as the main piece I built my ideas and developed the with the thought that this is going to be in an exhibition and it is going to be surrounded by pieces of paper sketches and paintings that I have done which would my journey and process of me making this painting but it would also symbolize my journey through these two years and just like bad moments and good moments there would be good drawing sketches and paintings and there would be bad drawings sketches and paintings.
And as I said I will continue to work on this painting and get it ready for the exhibition with all the pieces and bits necessary for me to have this painting presented to people in the hopes that it may inspired someone or give hope to someone that is in a bad place.
here you can see I finished the face and most of the background and I also worked on the clouds again to give the more depth and I also worked a bit more on the neck.
Here I added skin tones to the neck and added more clouds and the bottom part of the background
After the second layer dried I started painting the cloud I first started by painting the light areas and put down the orange after that I started doing the yellows and the highlights and after I was done layering and applying the different layers of colour and highlight I started painting the dark areas and I kept layering the clouds until I achieved the effect that I wanted.
Then I went in with more white paint and coloured in the areas that I wanted to start painting on I again did this to create more layering and also give a lighter surface for my lighter colours that are not as page and the other colours.
After the under paint has dried I then went in and started sketching out the composition of my painting with white. and i printed out the rendered painting i did in photoshop and stuck it to the canvas so that i would have a refrence to go off of.
First, I went in with some burn sienna and white and covered the canvas with it.
I did it because I wanted a darker undertone that the white of the canvas, the acrylic paint sits better on itself than gesso and I wanted start creating texture and layering from the beginning.
I’m going to be painting on a 120x100 canvas pre-prepared with gesso which helps a lot since I don’t have to prepare the canvas my self
my colour pallets one for the clouds(bottom) and one for skin tones (top).
I found this video on how to make interesting textures using acrylic paint and I think this is going to be useful for any projects or painting I do in the feature but again for this project it wont work because acrylic paint is really soft and it hard to sculpt it and try to make impasto.
More practice drawing head and head shapes and this time I focused more the planes of the head and did do facial features at all and I think these turned out way better this time.
I’m going to be continuing to practice the basics first the head shapes and the planes and general proportions in different positions before I move on to adding facial features.
Some quick practice sketching on passing people on the street.
Practicing head shapes and facial features with a double coloured pen which I find very useful because I can do the initial sketch with one colour and make corrections with another colour which when revisited can tell me what I did wrong.
some practice portrait drawing which I think turned out pretty well because I tried to go simple with the feature and focus more on the proportions of the face and observe everything well.
some portrait drawing practice I had which didn’t turn out very well I think I should stop focusing on the feature placement and focus more on the shape and planes of the head.
