An Overview of Note-Taking Styles
Note-taking is one of the most essential skills a student should master. It allows you to record and review information to be used in the future. But what’s the best way to do so? Here’s an overview of note-taking styles that can help you maximize your learning!

the leaves are starting to change, the weather getting colder and drier, the days shorter, autumn is arriving at last. the time for coffee shops and forgetting to bring sweaters, for red cheeks beneath big scarves and thoughtful books, for cold noses and longing gazes. the leaves are warmer, the skies colder, the buildings golden in the fading sun. we feel cozy and small, huddling together, but alive in the sharp air, laughing and playing like children, despite our age. what a time to be,,

11.16.19 || a spread from one of my busiest weeks in college so far + a reading about friendship for my ethics class that made me very emotional
i feel like every time i come on here to make an original post it’s just like “hey i haven’t been active lately or updated in a while, sorry, also this spread is long overdue and here’s a mini life update” and honestly? ive just accepted it.
so… life update: college is going well! i got a solid A on 2 of my 3 midterms which i was pleasantly surprised by :) also going thru high school as a studious person in a highly competitive school, while running a studyblr gave me the expectation that… everybody would do at least the bare minimum: do their readings, go to class, and study?? not so apparently. i didn’t realize how many people skip lecture until twice as many people showed up on exam day :0
it’s okay if you’re learning more slowly than everyone else. it’s okay if you stayed in bed all day yesterday instead of being productive. it’s okay that you don’t like every class or teacher you have. it’s okay if you didn’t do as well as you wanted to on that last exam. it’s okay if you forgot to hand in that last assignment. it’s okay if you make mistakes and fail sometimes.
as long as you get back up and continue to try your best, things will eventually work out. with progress, you will achieve your goals. it might seem scary and overwhelming to start, but trying is never a bad thing at all! sometimes things are going to be hard, but do them because you might surprise yourself. it’s not about perfection, but rather consistency. if you get back up and put in your best effort, you will be so much better off. other people may seem more “successful” than you, but that honestly does not matter. if you take tiny steps, at first it might not seem like you’re getting anywhere, but don’t give up. what other people think is so irrelevant. be patient, and over time, you will realize how far you’ve come. you can do this, and i believe in you!
A simple guide to writing notes
(and studying them!)
Many of us are guilty of spending hours scrolling through other people’s beautiful notes wishing we had their handwriting, their pens, or their talent. But did you know creating clean, aesthetic and creative notes doesn’t have to take forever?
Students are busy people, and note-taking is not a very efficient revision method. Few Studyblrs actually spend hours just taking notes.
How? Below I outline how to write and study Tumblr-worthy notes quickly and efficiently:
How to take nice notes:
Get a pen that works for you: it’ll make a huge difference. If you have cursive handwriting, a thin pen would be best. If you have thick, bubbly handwriting, a larger pen will suit. Make sure it’s comfortable as you’ll be writing a lot
Make your handwriting legible: trust me, it makes a difference. Practice is good but most importantly, take your time. When you’re re-reading your notes you want them to be as easy to understand as possible
Use the right paper: figure out what type of paper you like, whether thick, thin, graph or lined, etc.
Add doodles & decorations: experiment with different simple drawings, colour schemes, banners, stickers, washi tape, sticky notes, pens… the possibilities are endless! Make your notes your own!
Try different formats: see if you like two or three columns, boxes of information, splitting your page in half, gluing sticky notes or other non-traditional note taking formats. It’ll make them unique.
How to be efficient:
Use the Cornell method: testing yourself is the best way to learn
Don’t obsess: don’t spend hours on any single page, don’t restart if you make a simple mistake. I promise you people won’t notice. Use whiteout or cover it up with a cute sticker or note.
Type your notes: it’s faster, but be aware that some people find this distracting. Research shows you absorb less information if you type your notes.
Don’t take down everything: Only information you need to remember and key points.
How to actually study them:
Have motivational quotes throughout: it’s cute, and a small boost as you go.
Reward yourself: stick some candy (the ones with wrappers of course!) or a cute pen every 20 pages or so. That way you will have something to look forward to.
Be organised and have a plan: at the end of the day it comes down to discipline, whether with a to-do list or a bullet journal, have a plan and try your best to stick to it.
Something is better than nothing: force yourself to do at least 10 minutes of study every day. Usually, this is enough to get you in the zone and you will continue. If not, you’ve done 10 minutes more than you would’ve otherwise.
