I've had quite a few, and not just in D&D. I've also played Fabula Ultima (basically D&D if it took more inspiration from Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy), Call of Cthulhu, I've GM'd for Lancer and Savage Worlds
I've had a few D&D characters I'm fond of:
A half-elf Divine Soul sorcerer who was the bastard son of an elven king and treated like shit until the top elven god literally gave a sign that he was the god's chosen. Naturally, going from 'a disgrace to the king's legacy' to 'Literally God's Favorite Special Boy' went right to his head. Sadly I only got to play him for one session before the campaign got soft-cancelled
A changeling mastermind rogue/eloquence bard, smooth talking gentleman thief type who had skill bonuses so jacked up by various magic items he once rolled A FOURTY-THREE on a skill check to pick a lock.
A halfling divination wizard who comes from a very superstitious family that doesn't leave their hometown in fear of what they think is a curse - The last time there was an adventurer in his family, she got crushed by the corpse of a dragon that had been shot down by a completely different adventuring party. Went to wizard school, but didn't know how to fend for himself or how to budget so he resorted to using divination to steal test answers and sell them, leading to his expulsion and him making ends meet using his knowledge of the arcane arts for petty scams and confidence schemes.
A dhampir beast barbarian/pugilist (homebrew class, basically to the monk what the barbarian is to the fighter) who was a bareknuckle back-alley brawler who got preyed upon by a vampire posing as a patron for an underground fighting ring, he took up adventuring looking for a cure before the vampire could assert full control over him.
And in a Call of Cthulhu campaign set in New York City during the 80s, I played a con man selling knock off luxury goods who got roped into investigating a supernatural serial murder case that ended with him getting involved in a war between vampires and demons. Ended up becoming a really powerful wizard, though he was VERY reluctant to do so.
IDK why I'm drawn to playing so many scoundrel characters
