In Memory of a Mentor
This post is long, long overdue. On August 21st, 2020, the world and Veterinary Medicine lost someone special. His name was Brent Wilson and he was a Veterinary Technician with a specialty in Dentistry. I worked with him during my time at All Animals Veterinary Hospital in North Carolina. No matter what was going on in my life, he was a good person to talk to. He had an ear to listen and a judgement-free mind. He helped me learn some of my skills. I started monitoring anesthesia by monitoring his dentals; he helped me place my first catheter. He was excellent at his job and had something to teach everyone. We, who used to work with him, had grown to love his "Brentisms." The two that stuck with me involved nice veins - Ray Charles and Helen Keller being able to hit them they were so nice. He would always compliment me on the coffee in the morning, probably just to add a little smile to my day. He helped me become the technician I am and introduced me to the world of veterinary technician specialties. While I won't go into dentistry, I will always carry his memory with me as I pursue some specialty after school. He had worked with Dr. John Shontz at All Animals longer than I had been alive. I really looked up to him. He knew his job and he did it well. He helped out where he could. The clients loved him, and so did the patients. He had a way with animals that goes beyond just being a veterinary technician. I miss him convincing Dr. Hampton to bring us Bojangles the next morning. I miss so much about him that I just cannot put into words. We only worked together for about 5 years but he definitely impacted me and my career. He is missed, and will continued to be missed. Rest in Peace.
