Countryside estates were, for the nobles who lived in them, a blessing. A place for solace, for parties, or to send off children who's ears did not need to know the affairs of the adults around them.
Darios thinks himself considerate enough in the work that went behind the job where gossip was a favorite pass time and there were more than enough ears travelling past conversations to peddle it. It was that knowledge that he has extended to Lianna and Ike.
Ike he thought was best as a grounds keep, one who spoke with the people surrounding the territory, the lay person who knew small bits and pieces a servant dedicated to the manor's halls would not. Whether it is out of spite to prove him wrong or some insane idea that he could work better as a butler, Ike sits in front of him, his headband folded and placed into his right breast pocket and his hair a beast Darios finds himself contending with setting straight.
"All we need to do is our jobs. That includes breaking nothing, speaking little to the head of the house, speaking even less to our direct superiors," his hands pull a tangle from Ike's hair and gives him a pat on the shoulders.
"And above all else, absolutely no standing out." Using his own quarters was easy enough when one factored in the stories of orphans from a church that had been destroyed in the conflict months before.
"That goes for the both of you. Now, please tell me you recall your tasks?" Darios's own hair is slicked back as always, though he has to set aside his earrings for this excursion. "Servants are rarely given more than one or two chances to make a mistake."

HERE, LIANNA THOUGHT these expectations were outside of what she knew so far. For any God’s sake, the queen truly went from riches to rags the moment that she enrolled as a maid in this enormous estate. Being a royal, her duties had only been to be poise to keep appearances, sharp with weaponry, &. analyze the finances that went through the Aytolis kingdom’s repairs ── unless chaos called in the case of wake of the troublemaking twins inside the castle ( which they had to clean up their own messes after receiving a scolding from their mother ).
However, there’d be two, good things that came out of this.
Firstly, money was money. After spending the majority of the remaining allowance on textbooks, Lianna had no pocket change left. If she could her keep for this week &. the next, then she’d be able to buy something to prepare something for Rowan’s first day at Garreg Mach.
Second, the Aytolis royal hadn’t minded helping others out of the circumstance that they had some respect for others as well. With Darios’ certain instructions to be on their best behaviour, she knew she had to bite her tongue in this case. Although, she’d been better managing her anger to stay composed in public appearances.
Having an honest days’ work to help the owners was definitely worth the honest day’s pay if they did this correctly.
❝ Yes. I’m sure we both know our jobs, Darios! Clean every speck, tend to the manor, and follow orders without a peep. So, please don’t worry your head so much... They do say that stress could be the factor of those mistakes. As you said, it’s best to do our jobs without begging for a second, or third chance once they happen to occur.

summer afternoon in southern aytolis.
[ GARDEN ] - The Viscount has a greenhouse attached to his estate, hosting his collection of flowers both normal and enchanted, imported from a variety of places and modified by his own hands. Being unable to go outside in these conditions in any safety, this might be the next best thing.
"They're beautiful, aren't they?" Poe muses aloud, gently tracing the outer edge of a lily's petal with a slender finger. Grown in eternal sanctuary, it bows slightly under the pressure of her touch, but bounces back with vigor the moment she draws back, vivacious and undeterred. A reminder of just how strong the living become when they are allowed to flourish free of ill-intent. "It's a wonder, seeing such a wide variety of flora in one place. I can only imagine how deep their coffers are that they were able to bring something like this together."
Come to think of it, it's a bit crass to refer so openly to money at a party like this, though. Perhaps the wine from earlier had gotten to her. She shakes her head.
"Forgive me—I've neglected to introduce myself. Please, feel free to call me Poe." She turns to the other more directly to introduce herself. "Oh, and if you are playing the little game they've set up this year, I have a starfish for you."
WITH THE ABUNDANCE OF FLOWERS THAT LAID ACROSS THE GARDEN, one could only imagine the amount of money that was spent on its foundation. The meticulous consideration into fitting the colour scheme of the party &. shaping that must have taken ages to shear to perfection. Yet, strangely despite the possible large currency for this gardenscape, Lianna felt as if this beauteous form of art was worth its entire value to create a mere glimpse of what nature could provide.
❝ You know… When you look at a garden, how much money someone spent on it wouldn’t be the first thing that came to mind. However, you do make a surprisingly great point, ❞ SHE ACKNOWLEDGES the peculiar woman’s comment, turning to meet her with a soft chuckle. To Lianna’s amazement, she found the woman quite pretty enough to fit into the picturesque setting──similar to a verbana that stood out among the grounds.

It's the kind of romantic tale that she shouldn't be so drawn in by, she knows. But when you hear about a cavern whose water has prophetic powers, how could you NOT be intrigued by it? Against Lapis's better judgment, she finds her feet drawing her to the legendary caves.
However, when she gets there, hit by mixed feelings on whether or not to keep venturing forth, her breath is taken away by the glittering sight of the cavern walls one must pass before they get to the mystical pool. Outcrops of beautiful crystals decorate the cavern, a kaleidoscope of so many differently colored rocks.
She is completely captivated by it, slowly walking through the dark to take it all in, that she doesn't realize she's not alone until she's bumped into somebody.
“ Oh, my bad! I didn't see you there, ” she remarks, wide-eyed. “ The rocks here were just so pretty I couldn't help getting lost in them... But that's no excuse, heh. ”
She then asks out of concern, “ You didn't lose anything in the dark when we bumped into each other, did you? ”
⠀ IT WAS AS IF DESTINY GROTTO WAS PRACTICALLY A MAGNET. She’d been exploring this vast area, trying to escape from her responsibilities with impressions on the dancefloor. &. to her surprise, this dazzling cavern was certainly not a let-down by all means. Its breathtaking sight had her holding her breath, completely captivated by the sparkling waters, multi-coloured rocks, &. peaceful silence that drew her near. The young maiden sets down her heels for the first time since arriving in the ball, feeling the sand between her toes blissfully.
⠀ Just as Lianna begins to squat down to inspect the waters, another figure bumps behind her unexpectedly, followed by a faint ‘ clink! ’ echoing in the cavern. She whips around quickly to meet the pink-haired knight, raising both hands to reassure them rather than scold.

⠀ THE WOMAN BLINKS, feeling the top of her head for the circlet after being asked that particular question. Still had it. Next, were the gold earrings. The right had been covered, however…

⠀ SHE STANDS AT THE EDGE OF THE SANDY DANCEFLOOR, all dolled up in a short, royal blue &. white dress that dared to represent her homeland, Aytolis. Sky-blue hues reflect the gathered attendees dancing &. mingling under the protective barrier that separated themselves from the ocean. It was a familiar scene that she was accustomed to, yet found herself awkward to appear at every time.
⠀ Lianna was never the type to enjoy extravagant events. While every girl dreamt of debuting with their beloved on the dancefloor, she had always found it more or less a responsibility asked to be there since she was a teen. Her mother would beckon Rowan &. Lianna to arrive punctually &. dressed occasionally to create a good impression among their fellow nations. It was natural that the twins would complain fiercely at the notion at a young age. However, it would soon reach at its end once they’ve found distraction in staying near their dearest companion, Darios.

He hadn't taken his eyes off of her. From the moment they had entered the carriage, there was little other place his eyes could settle. Sitting across from her was best considering the situation but it had been so long since they'd been in carriage on their lonesome together that he couldn't help but feel a bit awkward. "You wear your crown beautifully, Lianna. I had worried it might be difficult to adjust everything for the venue, but you look as divine as a woman of your status should." No, it was far more than that but he couldn't be so heavy in his praises. Carriage finally stops and finally his head turns to look out the window as the rest of the guests begin making their way in. A last cursory glance. Gloved hands carefully hold just beneath her chin and he stands, leaning over to make sure not a hair is out of place, not a speck of dust sits atop her crown. There is little that could overcast the sun sitting before him. It is impulsive but chaste kiss is placed to her forehead before he leans back to look her in the eyes. "I'd rather not stifle you all night. I want you to meet other, represent Aytolis as well as I know you can. All I ask, save a dance for me, please."
⠀ AS IF HIS PRAISES WEREN’T ENOUGH TO CREATE A BURNING SENSATION IN HER CHEEKS. once his lips affectionately touched her forehead, the back of her neck follows up the same immense warmth. lianna silently hopes that the light cosmetics on her facial features were enough to disguise the flustered look that plastered on her face. she knew that darios was quite the charmer when needed to be, but she couldn’t help but feel her heart burst at every action he took.
⠀ ❝ i─it’s terrifying enough that you sound like mother already, ❞ LIANNA STAMMERS at her own jests while she keeps still for the gristonnian’s tight inspection. representing aytolis at the ball was a daunting task, yet necessary if she wanted to keep a good impression. for appearances, the blonde was practically the split image of her own mother. all dressed up &. adorning the circlet she'd inherited from her. as for interactions, that was yet to be determined of her own social skills.

He is focused so solely on his task that the new warmth on his face nearly makes him jump out of his skin. Darios had finished untying the blades and setting them aside yet his eyes fought every inch of the way to avoid looking up at Lianna. When she held his face, that was not a battle he could possibly win. The look that sits in her eyes brings forth memories he'd rather forget, searing pain and a hope that it would simply all end soon. He can do nothing but look at her and press his lips thin. "I was not unwilling. I was weak." It had taken time...wearing down...but he had accepted that power and he had used it until it was no longer his to control. That fight for dominance of body surging with it had left him exhausted even now. "Lianna you- from the others you have learned more than my petty apprehensions could offer." In some ways, his own lack of experience, lack of anything other than words he simply had to trust had made it easily to fall behind in the wake of those who had endured and still prevailed over fights so far above them. And what had he done? His trial had been lost and it was only by some god's grace that he persisted at all...to what end... "What do I want?" He repeated the question, his breath even. A hand hand over hers for but a moment before he stood and rendered his face out of reach. "To see you prosper yet not overwork yourself. To see you ready to take on all the responsibility that you must." "To see you happy...if I can play a part in that, then...that's all I truly want."
⠀ ❝ no, you were never weak, darios! anyone would have fallen under such a notion as well. he… was quite the powerful opponent. gods, i would’ve been in a similar situation if the tables were turned on me like that! ❞
⠀ THUMBS ROLL ACROSS HIS CHEEKS. all her life, the young woman knew him as the firm &. determined gentleman, but to witness such a pitiful expression that he made had sunk her heart in disbelief. she was sympathetic to the helplessness &. doubts that the raven-haired male harbours. lianna found herself comparable to her own mentor──no, friend in more cases than one. they were two of the same coin.
⠀ only this time, darios’ side fell more heavily in the burden of his own doubts they shared.

⠀ LIFTING HER HEAD, lianna’s lips press against darios’ forehead gently. a reassuring affection before pulling away to gather her materials as the tip of her ears began to burn.
⠀ ❝ anyways… thank you for today. if you change your mind about not going to the ball, or if you need anything, i’ll be in my room. ❞
⠀ SHE STANDS UP, walking away from the scene with a trail of small footprints left behind on the crunchy snow.

Few were the times when he let himself slip into childishness...but there was no shame, not in front of her. He pouted. "Knowing you...your dress would have caught in sand and sea water...that's hardly fine Lianna." He waits for her to catch up now and he hums. He wasn't going to tell the truth, for her sake it was best this was just- "It has been so long since I was able to escort you...and it is the only time out of the many that we might choose so much together." He smiled wide and allowed an air of calm to wash over them both. "It's an occasion I'd like to see go perfectly for you."

Upon hearing her question, he perks his head forward to pause and read the cookbook. One of the differences he finds between cooking and baking is that measurements are key. With the former, he’d often forgo the measuring part altogether and sprinkle a bit of this and that until the taste is just right. Baking is different. Once it all goes into the oven, there’s no going back.
“One cup. I guess this is the one they mean...” Jeralt says without much confidence in his tone, pouring the measured amount into the bowl.
The batter smells good enough, and its consistency looks like how he’d imagine it to be. Not too runny nor too thick. He tilts the bowl and aims it down into the first mold. As he finishes filling up the first pit, he pauses in realization. “Dammit. Forgot to put the cupcake papers in the tin first…” The Knight sighs and stops pouring, searching for the paper linings amongst the floured countertop. “Young lady, have you preheated the oven yet?”

⠀ SHE WHIPS behind to scan for the oven. looking down, it stands wide─open ready to be subjected into use. now, all she needs is something to ignite the wood inside the iron machine. a hand reaches in to grab the box of matches sitting on the oven’s back, picking one out, &. striking the tip ablaze before tossing it in.

Time stands still and he finds himself stuck on the ice as he listens to her. "Lianna..." Her name was the easiest thing to say. A lifeline that he was clinging to as mind raced and wondered what it might say. "You cannot blame all of what happened on Velezark." He had long accepted his responsibility for allowing things to transpire as they did. She is light hearted in her next words but as he makes his way to the pond's edge to join her...he cannot let it go. "Lianna!" He was hardly one to panic of find himself frantic...but this night- realistically it was just another ball of many but he'd have liked for it to have as few downsides as possible. "I take it you've heard of the venue change, yes?" Truthfully, he should've seen it coming. The monastery was...better than when he'd arrived but fee things could make up for the rubble that still littered around. "I'm certain you've lighter wear, or at least at hole you might...if we send word for it now we may be in time but it had never hurt to have a second or even third set of plans." He steps past the threshold into her room and wrist is taken in hand. "Your crown as well- Gods...I'm certain it can be protected from the elements but is that a chance we'd like to take?" For his part, he wouldn't. He needed not specify their destination as it was obvious. This tailor had managed him in a short time...though he knew the workload now would be horrendous, he trusted. Darios sighed as for the first time since pulling her along, he settled. "The weather will be wonderful once you get used to the winds...in some ways I suppose this works out." He was sure even their outfits before would have managed fine considering that the aytolian style favored much more breathable garments. "I suppose we'll be able to truly match now, won't we?"
⠀ LIANNA NEVER EXPECTED to be dragged away for errands this early in the morning. it had been after getting dressed first thing, then getting quickly yanked away with a soft ‘ eek! ’ coming out of her before she could even respond to his first question.
⠀ at least that was the wake up call that she needed, right?
⠀ the petite queen blinks, trying to process everything that was spoken from his mouth. to her surprise, she’d heard that the venue changed a day ago. although, it seemed no problem to the aytolian due to its minor outcome. however, darios’ dramatic behaviour reached further than she thought. his apprehensive ramblings reminded her of the time her mother worried her pretty little head over rowan &. lianna obtaining their first swords to their father, anxious of what dangers laid ahead of them as knights in the making.
⠀ if they had something in common, it was building stress enough to create a volcano of rising blood pressure.
⠀ ❝ darios! slow down a bit, won’t you?! ❞ SHE REQUESTS, holding her temple with a couple of fingers. his frenziness had almost taken a toll on her.

His first instinct given all that had transpired had been to skate closer to her side the moment hands departed. "Lianna you've no ne-" He was aware he wouldn't be able to stop her once she'd started but no one could say he hadn't made the attempt. "...for all the good, I've put you both through just as much strife. In the end, it was you both who took it all to heart." And it had been the heroes at their side that had guided them through it all where he had utterly failed. Darios is stunned, grey eyes wide and mouth held ajar. As a friend... He grimaced before in one smooth motion, a finger came to rest against he forehead where in days past a flick might have been given. "Lianna...with the state of-" Was it necessary? Truly, she surely understood toe ramifications of it all...yet it was Lianna...between her and Rowan...he felt certain they both still had such a rose tinted view. "I accept, of course. There's no need for gratitude if we're just friends...and most of the people here, I'm certainly you'll make good friends with."

⠀ THE ROSE─TINTED FANTASY THAT THE TWINS SHARED was among one of the questionable outlooks most people raised concerns about all of their life. too trusting, too kind. they were the duo that extended their hands towards the slightest problems, even if these situations reached new heights that seemed impossible to resolve. however, lianna &. rowan were──no, are royal fools of their own court whose hearts balanced evenly on the scales with feathers.
⠀ &. on the scale of judgement, darios’ actions during that day pronounced themselves just as light. it was no fault of his to be possessed, nor to slip through the cracks under his father’s deceitful commands. darios was practically strung like a broken doll in his own flesh &. blood’s hands.

"You don't flatter yourself enough..." Trailing off, his eyes did the same. He feels her gaze on him before steely eyes meet such bright hues. "No- I mean has he been...being Rowan." A soft laugh follows. "You always humble yourself so much around him. Leveling your head and rationalizing so much whilst he has enough pride for the both of you." Darios dearly missed them both. They truly were two halves of a whole. "Perhaps I am saying it too often, but you've not heard it enough...and I certainly haven't been able to say it much at all since it's been a bit since we parted."

It's an intonation he's learned well and one ha barely manages to disguise his feelings on. "Even back then, I told you the same thing." As if to prove his point, a foot slid back and arm she had released wrapped round her waist to keep her close.
