▐ FIRE AND WATER — SUJI & HANA
` Food, drinks, some seemingly overpriced souvenirs, and festival games here and there. Suji clasped her hands together in anticipation as she approached the line of vendors selling merchandise from all over the world. An opportunity like this doesn't happen often enough in my book, she ponders about to herself, very much intrigued with the bright, carefree atmosphere among the citizens of all ages in this Downtown area.
` It was when she was browsing through a book stand that it happened. In the midst of the crowd, a pleading voice that Suji suspected belonged to a prepubescent boy caught her attention. Come on, mother, he was saying with a sharp whine on the last syllable. I want to see the fire show. Can't we, can't we? Absentmindedly, Suji smiled to herself once hearing it; it reminded her of herself when she was younger, though her victim was almost always her sister. He continued, and this time, Suji looked over her shoulder: Please, it's just over there! The twenty-year-old followed the direction in which his little index finger was pointing towards, and sure enough, there was a fire show happening right before their eyes.
` Suji quickly paid the keeper for the book ("Oh, The Places You'll Go: A Picture Atlas") with a few yuans, thanked him, then maneuvered through the crowd towards the fire show. Since there was already a decently large amount of watchers, she tightly held onto her book, stood on her tiptoes, and peered over some shoulders to get a better view of the stage.
She stopped moving, eyes slowly widening.
No...But it is. It must be. Yes, she knew that face.
She knew that face pretty darn well.
▐ SHARING IS CARING — SUJI & BAEKHYUN
` The smell of roasted chicken sprinkled with sesame seeds and ginseng was simply been too mouth-watering inducing for Suji to resist, but nonetheless, she withheld herself with constant thoughts of having already made plans to dinner with uncle later that evening. While biting her bottom lip, she made a quick getaway from the stall she was just visiting (Yes, she reminds herself, Just visiting and nothing more...), and paused at a vendor that had a rather distinctively familiar style to it. The deep blue and soft white colors, the fur-skinned tee-pee in the back. If the stall keeper himself with his clothing style wasn't a dead giveaway already, within mere moments, she would have still guessed that this man was selling food and clothes straight from the water tribe.
` Not having visited the South in nearly a year, Suji approached the stall eagerly while shooting the vendor a smile. After greeting her, he leaned forward a little and, from across the wooden table, asked if she was from the Southern water tribe. Her smile widened even more as she nodded her head. "How did you know?" He returned the smile with the same degree, and told her he saw it in her eyes, but it was just a guess. Apparently, her eagerness was obvious. She learned he had traveled from the South, to which she responded, "Whoa. It's practically on the other side of the world! It's a hefty cost, but did you take the steam ships to come here?" And just like that, the conversation naturally began to roll. She admits, her physician assistant role might have something to do with this.
` By the time she learned the vendor's name, could remember his wife's and sons' names, how long the trip took, and where he planned on staying for his stay in the City, Suji decided to buy some things, as she was surprisingly the only customer. A box of cookies caught her eye, and, to her much dismay and delight, it just had to be the last box of seaweed cookies. She could taste it in her mouth already. After a moment of hesitation, she reasoned with herself. Eh, cookies won't ruin my appetite, or I can just eat it some other time. Her hands reach for the last box, but unfortunately, someone just might have shared similar thoughts to her own.
▐ LETTERS SCRIBBLED — SUJI & EUNJI
To my snow sledding pal,
How's the weather down south? I heard from one of my travelling patients that it's been bitter, is that true?! I really hope not; my mom extremely really hates it when it gets biting cold as much as she hates having to skin a seal for a ritual. Speaking of mom, let her know that uncle will be sending down some gifts. He won't tell me what it is, but I have a feeling I know already because of the shape...Also, let her know that I've still been keeping water tribe food in my diet, and that she'll receive the proof soon!! She wouldn't believe me, even though I swore on Tui and La! Believe it or not, it's not difficult to find the world's delicacies within the city at this time. In fact, you can find just about every type of food here! These days, unfortunately, the clinic has had back-to-back patients come and go. (Don't read this to mom: I enjoyed before, I enjoyed each and every moment, but I feel depleted out of energy so quickly during the day. But I'll be fine! I'm a physician, I should be fine!)
What an idiot I am! I should have said this earlier when I mentioned the gifts, but I'm also sending you something! Guess what it is? It's a bag of fire gummies! They are extremely spicy! Don't say I didn't warn you! Let me know what you think, and what anyone you might give it to thinks of it!! If you like it, I can send some more, along with anything else you'd like to try! There is a celebration happening in the city, but I'm expecting myself to be out on the streets just a few times. I'll look out for more things to send!
That's all on my side. Don't want this letter to run on too long. You know how I am with writing! Speaking of writing Nevermind, ahahaha. And how are you, Eunji? How are your parents doing? Tell them I said hello! I hope that everyone is doing well. I can't wait to hear back from youuuu!
From, Suji
You’re oppressing yourself! That didn’t even make sense!
▐ UNEXPECTED — SUJI & JENNIE
` There have been many times when Suji has either been disappointed and thoroughly surprised (or, as the expression goes, has had the carpet pulled out from under her). That time when her sister promised to make a cake with mangoes, which seemed impossible to Suji, given the South's weather conditions - surprised. Then that time when her uncle told her the Council would be taking action to ensure the reduction of the prevalent tension among the peoples - disappointed. Today, she would have one of those moments in a slightly different way; she just doesn't know it yet.
` But first, today, there were a few other citizens besides herself walking, jogging, or lolloping around Republic City Park. She'd smile at any of the passing citizens with greetings of hello's and how are you's. Even to the strict-faced park monitors who looked quite unhappy that the warm sun was setting with fierce red and yellow streaks, slowly being replaced by night's cold winds. She walks onto the bridge in the middle of the park and leans over the railing, meeting her face in the water. One thing crosses her mind: Uncle is expecting to eat fish for dinner tonight.
` Thoughts interrupted, she hears (and feels) a sudden disruption in the air. Somewhere nearby, she heard a voice quickly followed by sharp shouts of warnings. She notices a figure possibly scolding the girl (whose figure looked familiar from where she was) for frightening them, and to be careful. The breeze helped carry some of her hair away from her face as Suji focused long and hard at the girl. Interest taking the better of her, she walks off the bridge and decides to see what the matter was (and get answers as to where she's seen this girl from).
▐ CALL THE DOCTOR — SUJI & SIHHA
` The sun is still high above the slow-paced clouds, yet Suji is sure she has rubbed both of her eyes in circular movements for the tenth time. Admittedly enough, the clinic she's presently working at had (beyond from normal of) a busy day, where most of the cases involved upset stomachs or food poisoning. Thankfully, she was given a break by Doc after telling a patient instructions of when and how to take his medicine. Rare occurrence, really. It's going to be one of those days, she thinks to herself.
` Then a knock on the door of her office so light, Suji would not have heard it if she weren't sitting next to the cabinet files near the door. "Come in." That new nurse she's now well familiar with enters, and she doesn't miss her apologetic smile while passing a handful of patient files over to Suji. "Doc wants you to handle these few patients. His hands are tied right now with a surgery." Suji nods her head slowly, but her eyes gleam with understanding. She should have known it was too good to be true. Every staff was needed, after all. Then she realizes her mistake and immediately brightens up her face with a professional smile. "Alright, thank you for letting me know!"
` The young physician assistant takes the files and proceeds to follow the nurse out of the office. Suji sits herself behind the only desk in the next room, situated in front of a salmon-colored therapy bed. She opens the file on top after giving a smile and nod to the nurse to bring the patient in. This person only wants a check-up, so he's out the door within minutes, followed by her recording of his vital signs. The next one has a fractured knee with a deep cut, so Suji immediately bends and envelops her hands in water, slowly breathes in, and heals the cut with the bright-colored water. She ushers the patient to the nurse to take care of the rest after informing her of his condition. After two more, Suji is on her fourteenth eye rub. No more patients at the moment, thank the heavens.
` Soon after she's updating the last patient's file, though, she hears someone enter abruptly. She looks up from the papers after recognizing the nurse's voice from earlier. "There's someone who is persistent in wanting to see you now, is that alright?" Suji tilts her head to the side a little, racking her mind of who it could be.
As long as I'm needed.
"Yeah, why not. I mean, yes, that's fine."
