This is the piece I did for Typography in motion using Adobe After Effects. It’s also known as kinetic typography where text and motion are mixed to express ideas using animation. The stronger the presentation of the idea, the easier it is to convey the message and evoke other ideas, actions or emotions.
I choose to use the song Sober by Mahalia because the context and lyrics of the song are clear which to me pans out like a narrative. The narrative is that the artist is having some internal dialogue and at key points she verbalises to another individual.
When editing this video, my focus was on animating the words ‘sober’ and ‘I take back’. I found it difficult to develop the additional graphics as they involved other programmes and complex techniques so I did my best to achieve some of what I had in mind. I included a ringing phone sound effect to make the theme explicit and I used a font and colors that reflected this theme of a messaging system which uses blue, white and grey. I then used the text tool to type over the speech bubbles and create the text whilst putting the word ‘sober’ in colour as well as giving it an wiggle effect hoping to convey the fear/panic of sobering up and remembering things from the night before which they now regret.
With hindsight, I feel the ringing tone is misplaced and would make better sense at the very beginning rather than alongside the display of the song title and I would like to have animated the initial display of the song so that it pops up like an imessage would. My use of real motion graphics is limited and this pieces hinges on creativity rather than the techniques used. In future, I will take more time to learn about these techniques so that I can display more skill within my work.
