Did you want something, or are you just going to stand there?
âWell, I was just going to stand here but since you spoke to me I guess weâre stuck in this conversation.â

âWell, I was just going to stand here but since you spoke to me I guess weâre stuck in this conversation.â
Say what you will, but I didnât think the movie was all that bad.Â
âI mean, I guess it wasnât bad if you like movies like that.â
âAny plans while youâre free?â
âActually, no. Iâve been told I actually donât know how to have fun..So..Thereâs that.â
âI never thought Iâd get sick of the library but I think I actually forgot the outdoors existed. Being free to do nothing for a little while is actually great!â
âThis is actually making me want to go to prom now.â
âI canât say if anyone in my class did anything crazy like that at prom because I skipped out. But I think going to prom covered in blood sounds like the best option.â

Henry sighed, setting the box down gently, and pulling out the smallest kitten of the litter. She was by not means a runt, but she was still much smaller than her older brothers and sisters.
âOnly if you promise to be careful with herâŠâ Henry said, gently cradling the mewling kitten. She was the smallest, but still the loudest of the litter. She obviously had a lot to say about being held, or being so far away from her siblings. Her crying set the entire box off, every tiny kitten screaming at once and trying to figure out where their baby sister had gone all of a sudden.
âOh. I onât have to hold her but sheâs lovely. They all are quite...cute.â Logic had suddenly slipped out of her brain. âWe canât take them all but two? I think we could manage 2.â The reply sheâd given had surprised herself.
Now she was looking closer at the kittens, looking for one that would suit  her best and one that would suit her sister. âWhat do you think, huh? Which kitten looks like me and which kitten looks like Lucia?â

âNot enough room.â Heâd heard that line enough today. Everyone said that. People who had plenty of space said that. People who didnât say that said they had no time. What were they doing that was so important? Lives were on the line, and all they could think about were themselves? Disgusting. The entire town was disgusting. The entire human race was disgusting. Why had God not launched them all off into the vacuum of space yet?
âThey donât need that much space! As long as you walk âem, theyâll be happy!â Henry pleaded, making an effort to tip the box towards her so she could see inside, hoping the unstoppable charm of baby kittens would be enough to sway her. He could certainly care for one or two, but thereâs no way his foster family would let him take them all home. âCome on, theyâre orphans! Theyâll die without youâŠâ
Esperanza glanced behind herself, looking back at her loud, crazy little family. Maybe a cat would be a welcome addition to the family. Pets brought people together, didnât they? In a way that was better than arguing, sheâd assumed. And secretly, well, secretly she had always wanted a cat.
âCan I hold one?â She asked, hesitantly as she surveyed the box. She didnât think about asking her mother, it was usually Esperanza who made decisions like these anyway.Â

He always managed to get himself into these sorts of situations, but he was never quite sure why. It was as if he had two selves, one that told him it was a stupid idea, that he wasnât allowed to do it, and that he had no plan of how to deal with the aftermath, and another that told him to look into those cute little eyes and just try to say no.
Thatâs what got him into this situation. Thatâs what got him an entire box of squirming, mewling, tumbling kittens. He told himself he wouldnât do it again. And this is what happened anyway.
Heâd be wandering around town for an hour now. His legs were killing him, the kitties were hungry, and he was still miles from home. Didnât anyone else in this town have a fucking heart? How could you turn down such innocent little creatures? His rational self told him to leave the box on the street and forget about it, but he couldnât bring himself to do it. These little babes trusted him!
Sighing, he turned up yet another path to yet another house for yet another sales pitch to fall on deaf ears. Hoping maybe heâd have better luck this time, but nonetheless bracing himself for more disappointment, he awkwardly knocked on the front door around the squirmy box.
âDo you want a kitten? Come on, theyâre cute! And free!â He hurriedly asked to the person who answered the door, hoping maybe theyâd answer before slamming the door on him. âReally cute, I swear!â
The last thing Esperanza was expecting to hear was a knock on the apartment door. Her sisters were helping clean up with dinner and Esperanza had been trying to work up the courage to follow her father to his âstudyâ and attempt to have an important talk. The knock was her savior from her own half baked plan,Â
And when she heard her mother yell from their cramped kitchen for her to answer the door. Esperanza obliged with amazing speed. Sheâd even had a small speech prepared out, as she was sure it was someone peddling their religion.
But before she could say anything she was thoroughly distracted by the box of kittens their visitor was holding. Esperanza heard herself let out an involuntarily squeak at the thought of being able to actually own and take care one of those kittens. She deflated a bit, remembering how cramped their apartment already was, and a cat meant another mouth to feed as well.Â
âOh, theyâre so cute!â She said, her tone more sad than excited. âI just donât know if we have any...room for an animal, you know?â She couldnât keep the disappointment out of her voice.
âI-Iâm fine. Really. Iâm fine. Sorry. Uhm- How are you?â
âIâm fine. This is what fine looks like.â Esperanza replied, gesturing to herself. âWhatâs the matter, really?â
âI guess so, but only in this case. Itâs just a little fishy everything that happened that preceded his death like writing her out of the will, talking about a divorce and her being mega-pissed he didnât take the gig at Lollapalooza, which was worth millions.âÂ
âThe whole Yoko thing I donât deal with because she didnât really have a motive or anything like that. Â Courtney had a shit load to gain by Kurt dying, I think the case deserves to be looked at again, especially with all the evidence against her.â
âI suppose but itâs not really my business. I usually ignore the affairs of celebrities. Or conspiracies about their death. Itâs sad, sure, but itâs over. It happened and...Well, time to move on. â
âOh, but the pigâs blood is what makes it fun.â
âPersonally, Iâd love the telekinesis more than anything. But if you come to prom covered in pigâs blood...Well, thatâll be one unforgettable night.â
âOn record, yes, it says he shot himself but the circumstances that surrounded the situation with Courtney point in a different direction.â
âOh. So, youâre one of those conspiracy theorists? I donât really buy into any of that sensationalist stuff. Itâs sort of shitty to blame the woman--like the whole âYoko Ono broke up The Beatlesâ--I just donât buy into it.â
âItâs fucking ridiculous. Itâs been, what, a week? And already Iâm feeling vaguely homicidal. Iâm gonna end up killing someone by the end of this, I swear.
âPlanning on going all âCarrieâ at the prom? Hopefully without the pigs blood. And try not to destroy the entire town.â
âWell, prom is not only about underage drinking and teenage pregnancy you know? Prom can also be the night where friends get together and tag along, but if someone spikes the punch then I guess youâre probably right. Another one bad thing about what Iâm saying is that most of what you said is true.â
âI guess it all depends on the person. Honestly, prom was never my thing even when I was in high school. A waste of time and money. I actually still dread prom season, so Iâll be happy when itâs all over.â
âThatâs the spirit.â
âWell, I can only hope Lucia keeps up the good work.â Esperanza chuckled, shaking her head. âAnyway, what are your prom plans?â
âHa, I wish. As much fun as it is watching everyone I hate be even more stupid than usual, it gets a bit nauseating after about a day of it.â
âI didnât even like prom season when I was in high school. Spending way too much money on a dress you only wear once and watching everyone turn into complete idiots over a silly dance? It gets old fast.â
âLevel with me, what do you think happened to Kurt Cobain?â
âHe killed himself. Isnât that a well known fact?â
