“In case you ever feel like you’re missing home, you know?”
“I love it! Thank you so much, Miss Faye!”
“Well then happy birthday.” She stated, handing her a small pink box.

“Eeeeeeeeeep!”
I found a hat.
Oh, come on, you don’t know where it’s been.
“Well happy birthday, my dear! Is it against the rules to give presents to students?”
“Not if it’s her super-special seventeenth birthday!”
“Oh, where’s the birthday girl?”
“Here I am!”
“I’ll give you stars and the moon and a soul to guide you And a promise I’ll never go.
I’ll give you hope to bring out all the life inside you And the strength that will help you grow.
I’ll give you truth and a future that’s twenty times better Than any Hollywood plot.”
And I thought, “You know, I’d rather have a yacht.”
Those Who Don’t Try Never Look Foolish | Gail and Gloria
“I see.” Gloria nodded. Her heart ached as her daughter and student poured everything out. Prom was supposed to be a fun occasion. She’d be damned if she let some stupid boy ruin it for her.
“First off, I want you to know that you do have every right to say no to a man.” She reassured Gail. “Secondly, you have to go back into that ball room, find your first date and have a glorious time. If you want, you can tell me who the boy was that harassed you. You don’t have to but I am here for you.”
“I will, eventually,” Gail said, nodding. No sense wasting her prom moping in here, especially not because of Henry. “But I need to calm down. If I go in there when I’m still mad, I’ll probably do something really dumb. My dad says I take after him in that regard, blood or no blood.”
She sighed.
“It was Henry Rivers.”
Shut Up and Smile | Eric and Gail
Eric snorted, “And since when was there any skill to dancing at prom?” The truth was, Eric had no idea how he faired as a dancer. It wasn’t that he went to many parties or anything. Still he did his best to attempt to move in time with the music, all the time he was thinking ‘what the hell am I doing with my arms?’ at the back of his head.
“My parents made me take a squaredancing class when I was in fourth grade,” Gail revealed, cringing a bit at the memory. “The guy I had to dance with was a foot taller than me, it was terrible.”
“Here, your hand goes...” She moved his hand from her shoulder to her waist. “See? Much less awkward looking.”
Oh, oh, I want some more Oh, oh, what are you waiting for? Take a bite of my heart tonight
Shut Up and Smile | Eric and Gail
“I may have given him fire and brimstone without meaning to. I also told her that he was dating Terrence. She didn’t know. She’s very upset that he didn’t tell her.”
He fashioned a wide grin on his face and turned to Gail. She really did look lovely tonight. “How’s this for a presidential grin? Someone give me a baby to kiss, right?”
Gail rolled her eyes, but she was laughing, and shoved him in the chest.
“Come on, I like this song,” she said, pulling him to the side of the dance floor. She knew that if she made him get in the center of it, he might faint. And then she’d have to either dance around his still body on the floor, or try to “Weekend at Bernie’s” it and dance while holding him up. Either option sounded awkward.
“You know how to dance?”
Shut Up and Smile | Eric and Gail
Eric snorted, “Yeah, alright,” he answered, unable to keep the sarcasm out of his voice. “I think he’s going to try and set his boy toy on me. A shame really, his mother isn’t so bad, she said she’d make him apologise.”
Eric put the car into park. “Time to make our entrance, eh?” he asked Gail with a wink.
“Did she really? Well, then there’s hope. Henry is the world’s biggest momma’s boy.”
She got out of the car, smiling at him.
“Come on,” she said, taking his arm and eagerly pulling him along.
Shut Up and Smile | Eric and Gail
Eric’s brows were still raised as Gail climbed into the car. He was half surprised and half worried. “Oh boy,” was all he said before he climbed into the car.
He started up the engine and turned towards Gail. “Ready for the lamest event of the year?”
“It isn’t lame, shut up,” Gail said, laughing. “I helped decorate, okay? Which, incidentally, led to the ball-kicking incident.”
When they got there, the gym was already a bit crowded with high schoolers and chaperons.
Those Who Don’t Try Never Look Foolish | Gail and Gloria
Gloria waved her hand dismissively, “I’m sure no one will miss me. Besides there are tons of chaperones around.”
She stood up and crouched beside Gail, looking up at her daughter with a small smile, “But back to you. What happened? And don’t lie to me this time.”
Gail took a deep breath, and shrugged, trying to give her the short version.
“I have a date but this other guy asked me out and I turned him down as nicely as I could and then he got all nasty about it and started calling me a bitch and harassing me and even though I’m mad at him I still feel sort of bad for him, which is stupid because, you know, I have a right to say no and he’s being a total asshole--and it’s not fair, because everything was going really well between me and the first guy before he showed up.”
Prom (or Nah?) | Gail and Frederick
Frederick stood to the side of the dance floor and watched as a coupled strolled in, heading toward the punch bowl. There wasn’t really much to do at that point in the night, anyway. The male of the pair abandoned his girl and if not Frederick, then who would make sure she was taken care of in his absence? Hw wouldn’t try to make a drastic move or anything, he was too sober for that, he just wanted to pick with the girl a bit.
“Hello there, Miss Rubens, getting along nicely I see,” he spoke with a hint of feigned flirtation in his voice.
Oh. God.
“Hi, Mr. T,” Gail said, not even bothering to fake enthusiasm. It was fairly well known around Pageson High that no one cared for their new French teacher very much. But he controlled her grade, so she’d be polite.
Those Who Don’t Try Never Look Foolish | Gail and Gloria
Gloria nodded as she made mindless chatter with another chaperone. In truth, she didn’t know what the conversation was about. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a distinct brunette storm out of the gym. The woman frowned as she excused herself from the conversation.
She discretely followed Gail down the hall and watched as her daughter went into a class room. Gloria instinctively found herself in front of that same door. Her hand went to the knob; what if she didn’t want her there? Gloria shook her thoughts away and gently knocked on the door first. She poked her head in, her heart sinking at the sight.
“Gail…” Gloria trailed as she took a tentative seat next to the younger woman. “Gail, what’re you doing here? Is everything alright?”
Gail looked up, and then quickly averted her gaze again when she saw Gloria. She turned her head away, wiping her eyes on the back of her hand.
“I’m fine,” she said. An obvious lie. “Don’t... don’t stay in here on my behalf. Shouldn’t you be back at the dance chaperoning?”
It was a pathetic excuse, and she knew it. So far, the raciest thing that had happened was some girl grinding on her boyfriend for a bit too long. The chaperons were really more of a formality.
Prom-Ish | Henry and Gail
Henry practically pounced on her, grabbing her shoulders and turning her back around to face him. He was not at all sure what the plan was, but he couldn’t stand the thought of given her the last word. He wasn’t even sure why he was talking to her in the first place! He thought he came here for revenge, or maybe to prove that he could get along fine without her, but with all this back-and-forth it felt like he actually wanted to try and earn some fucked-up kind of forgiveness, but it always came out wrong. Every time he tried to wipe the slate clean he’d say the wrong thing and instead it’d just make everything worse.
“N-no, wait!” Henry stumbled over his words, trying to figure out what he was supposed to say to a girl to which he had just made very clear leaving was a no-no. There was very little damage control could do for that. It was creepy at best, and there was no telling how worse this could get. “I–I, uh… I… G-Gaily, I, uh, er…”
He bit his lip, slowly coming to realization that he had probably just ruined every chance he ever had forever. God, he shouldn’t have come. Or at the very least he should’ve decided what he wanted before he stormed in here! You can either kiss her or ruin her life, you can never have both. He dropped eye contact, keeping his hands on her shoulders but his eyes on the floor, trying to figure out if he should run now or at least let her get one good swing in so the next time wouldn’t be as bad.
Gail sighed as she looked at him, unsure of what exactly she should say. Her anger was subsiding, and now it was replaced with... well, sadness was the wrong word, but it wasn’t quite pity, either.
It wasn’t that she liked him. “Like” was more or less exactly the wrong word for what she felt for him. But she didn’t hate him as much as she often claimed she did, and at times, she couldn’t help but feel bad that this whole cat-and-mouse game had gotten out of hand. They would never be friends. Of that, Gail was certain.
But surely they didn’t have to be enemies.
“Henry, you go back to your date, and I’ll go back to mine,” she finally said. “And just... I don’t know. Keep your distance, okay?”
Prom-Ish | Henry and Gail
“That says way more about you than it says about me!” Henry shouted, attracting the attention of a few more people than he intended. He awkwardly glanced around the room, trying to shrink out of view. He could almost feel the judgement radiating off the admittedly few people that heard him shouting. He grabbed Gail by her wrist and lead her out into the hallway, ignoring her protests.
“That says way more about you than it says about me…” Henry hissed, keeping his voice lower. “Seriously, I don’t think you like me, and I know I don’t like you– you’re the only one bringing romance into this! Do you have some sort of thing for me, Rubens? Because I’m flattered, but shove it up your taint, I’m not interested.”
Gail wrenched her wrist out of his grasp, though he was quite a bit bigger than her. Stronger, too, if she was being honest. Luckily, she had the advantage of speed and a killer groin kick.
“Oh, right, because you didn’t bring romance - or your idea of romance - into it when you stared at my boobs or made comments about my body or antagonized me the second I made it clear I wasn’t interested?” Gail said. “God, just leave me alone, would you? I have a date I’d like to get back to.”
She turned on her heel and went back into the gym.
