Christian reached for her Este immediately, grabbing her hand and pulling her back up with a grin that was half apologetic, half amused. “Hey, hey,” he said between laughs. “In my defense, that happened fast. Rodeo moved like a linebacker just then. He just loves loving on people." Still smiling, he laced his fingers with hers as they started walking toward the stand. Her exaggerated coffee dilemma made him glance down at her with a crooked grin. “Este, this isn’t a job interview. You’re safe getting whatever you want to get. Get what you'd enjoy." When she leaned against his side, he bumped her shoulder lightly with his. “The only wrong answer here is black coffee. That’s serial killer behavior.” At her comment about the dogs also being on a date, Christian looked down at them both trotting beside them and nodded seriously. “You’re right,” he said. “It's a double date." He glanced down at Rodeo with a small smile. “Pup cups are non-negotiable. I’m not trying to get canceled by the dogs on my own date.” When she started passionately defending tajín and chamoy on fruit, Christian slowed his steps a little, giving her a playful side-eye. “Oh wow,” he said slowly. “You’re just dropping controversial opinions like that on the first date?” But the teasing smile on his face made it clear he was entertained more than anything. “I don’t know,” he continued lightly. “Spicy fruit might be the boldest thing you’ve admitted so far.” Her comment about Austen judging him made Christian glance down at the dog again, crouching slightly as they walked. “Oh, my bad,” he said sincerely to the dog. “Austen, you’re extremely pretty. Rodeo told me so himself." Then he looked back up at Este with a grin. When she joked that dogs looked like their owners and that Austen was sweet and smart, Christian glanced at his dog. “What exactly makes us alike?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at her with playful suspicion. “Because I feel like that answer determines whether I’m offended or flattered.” He crouched slightly to scratch Rodeo behind the ears again, looking between the dog and Este like he was genuinely considering it. “Is it the charm?” he added with a small grin. “The long hair? The effortless athleticism?” Then he stood again, clearly enjoying the bit. “Or is this your polite way of telling me I tackle people and knock them over when I get excited too?” he teased, nudging her shoulder lightly as they kept walking.
she loved how casual and, at the same time, meaningful holding his hand felt, it felt real, and it gave her butterflies in her stomach over something as simple as that. "i know, but you were the one who said you’d judge me," she pointed out, raising her eyebrows at christian with an amused smile on her lips, "well, not exactly that, but something close enough," she added with a soft laugh. she liked hearing him call it a date, she already knew it was one, but hearing it from him made it feel different. "it’s not a controversial opinion," she assured, laughing, "it’s about handling spice, and i don’t know how good you are at that," she teased, laughing at her own words. "but it’s really good, just thinking about it makes my mouth water," she admitted. when he asked about her comment on pets looking like their owners, este smiled. "oh, he’s just sweet, a little goofy, nice hair… that’s you," she said, "and he’s got that western attitude, i bet he can line dance too," she joked. "it’s definitely the charm, the long hair, and how polite you are," she laughed. "i don’t know if you tackle people when you’re excited," she added, "maybe you do, but you haven’t been excited to see me, so i feel like the answer will decide if i’m offended or not," she teased, echoing him. she smiled, then shook her head lightly as she stepped closer to the cart. "i’ll have a cappuccino, two pup cups, and…" she turned to look at christian, her tone softening, "what do you want?"
