There are other good books by poets of color but these were the ones that felt most satisfying (or had a high rating on my Goodreads). I would have recommended Warsan Shire’s Her Blue Body but it seems to have disappeared off of Amazon after her announcement of an upcoming poetry book on Twitter.

She looked straight into my eyes and came closer to me. I offered her some coffee but she opened her mouth wide and reached my face with a warm and callous hand. Caressing my cheek she said to me "you're a survivor, I know it" and then and there I realized how little I identify as anything that isn't written on my body... Because to me identifying as something sometimes feels like reliving everything, and mostly, the bad, the bad. The stuff I want to forget. The stuff that actually makes me who I am, despite it all. I chuckled with her and nodded; she took the coffee, and took off to find some change and wash her hair. That morning tho, it made me think that perhaps the walls I build to go through the daily life aren't actually working. Or maybe when we are amongst our people they automatically disappear. Because it's familiar. Because it's necessary. Because we relate, in some level. Kin is interesting. I feel most comfort with the misfits, and it seems like they see me too.

“To make any trans person a symbol for an entire community is an unfair task. No one can speak about the varying, intersecting and layered ways in which trans people experience the world. That is why it’s necessary to create a space for nuance and to amplify the voices of those who often are not heard.”

“What enables Jenner to penetrate media the way she has is privilege…It doesn’t make her a bad person. It doesn’t make her undeserving. It doesn’t underwrite her talent, savvy and accomplishments. Privilege enables her access to more conversations, more opportunities, more spaces which can appear as if she’s eclipsed leaders of a movement that has been active for decades, fueled by a community that is ravaged by economic instability, lack of access to knowledgable affordable healthcare, overpoliciing and incarceration, stigmatized, criminalized survival economies like sex work, high HIV infection rates, the ability to live safely and freely as their true selves, and disproportionate violence against trans women of color.”

“Not all trans people care about putting people at ease. Let me be clear about that. Yet for many, presentation is vital and essential, especially for trans women where blending in is a matter of safety.
