He almost misses them when he walks by. His cleats clink awkwardly against the tiled floor as he strolls through the supermarket. His helmet is held in one hand as he leisurely patrols the empty aisles, looking for nothing in particular. The store is relatively empty, quiet except for the faint sound of generic pop-music playing over the speakers and the vague noise of conversations further into the store. The quietness makes him stand out more, his cleats click-clacking across the tiles, clad in his cycling kit as he strolls through the supermarket.
He almost misses them. But he doesn’t.
Some yellow flashes by him out of the corner of his eyes and his head instinctively turns, as if on a swivel. The reaction is instinctual he supposes, ingrained in his bones, his muscles, his brain, his entire body coiling tight and ready to strike at any flash of yellow that passes him. His shoulders drop when his eyes land on the yellow roses, the cut flowers standing in a bucket amongst other bouquets and flowers of varying types and colours, a quiet sigh escaping him as he eyes the flowers.
Secretly, he ignores the way his heart sinks in disappointment every time he turns at a flash of yellow and it turns out to just be another car, another bike, another shirt, another flower.
Not him.
He stares at the flower for a long moment, silently scrutinising the flowers in front of him, as if they were personally responsible for the way his heart always seemed to stumble at the sight of anything yellow. He blinks a couple of times, looking back and forth between the roses and the other aisles of the store, as if debating whether to walk past the flowers. He sighs again, shaking his head at himself, at the way he so easily faltered at the sight of mere yellow flowers. He turns and walks further into the store, grabbing the packet of candy that he had originally came for.
He walks past the flowers again on his way out of the store, a small bag of candy now clutched in his hand along with his helmet. Once again he stops in front of the offending yellow roses, staring them down with narrowed eyes. His eyes flicker between the flowers and his phone in his hand, silently debating with himself. He closes his eyes briefly, taking a deep breath, his hand clenching and unclenching around his phone before he looks down to unlock it. He quickly snaps a picture of the yellow roses and hurriedly walks out of the store and back to his bike before any unsuspecting people witness his internal war with the flowers.
As he stands next to his bike he once again looks at his phone, opening his contacts before he can think much of it. He clicks on the contact simply labelled Jonas, his fingers hovering over the screen hesitantly before he selects the photo of the roses and clicks send. He quickly types out a short text to go along with the photo.
Saw these and thought of you
And then:
When do I get to see you again?
