Sitar of Pandit Ravi Shankar (1920–2012) British Museum wrote : Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of master sitar player Ravi Shankar 🎶
He brought Indian music to the western world in the 20th century – influencing musical genres from jazz to classical, and famously collaborating with the Beatles.
In 2017, Ravi Shankar’s family donated one of his famous sitars to the Museum. Created in 1961 especially for Shankar, this beautifully decorated instrument is made from teak with gourd resonators, and is inlaid with stained bone and wood patterning.
