you can't say the no caller ID was a complete mystery. you checked the time on the phone before pressing your ear against it. it's 11 p.m., and if you know him, which you do, you’d know he's high and the biggest side effect he's feeling right now is loneliness.
"are you home?" a low voice hums out in response.
not a completely serious question, for the record. you know he knows that you know who it is.
"don't do that," he chuckles for a second before stopping himself, "you know."
you don't respond. you’re unsure how to at this point. it's a little embarrassing how much of a routine this has become. it's been a couple of months since you two have broken up, and ironically, you’ve been more in touch than ever.
"you can't keep calling, cal," you let out as a half whisper.
as much as you’d hate to keep self-destructing this way, you couldn't help yourself either.
"you can't keep answering," he rebuts almost immediately. you can hear the smile on his face.
you pause for a moment. you could feed him hundreds of reasons as to why this isn't healthy for both of you but you don't.
"fair enough," you admit in defeat.
"so," he goes on, "can i pass by?" he whispers. you’d question his quietness more if it weren't this late. but it is late and he's probably around his friends.
it doesn't offend you that he hides the situation from them because you do the same with yours. it's not something you’d both be proud to confess.
his friends would probably call him weak and yours would probably convince you to cut him loose.
"yeah," you whisper back.
some minutes pass, a quick update on his ETA, and before you know it, the door opens.
you set the phone down and walk to the door.
you take a look at him. white tee, black sweats, eyes puffy, and hair disheveled. broken up or not, his presence still triggers nervousness inside.
"usually people knock before entering." you chuckle at him.
"sorry," he half-smiles. "easy to break in when you leave the key under the mat.” he takes your key and hangs it up on the key holder by the door.
you both stand at the door for a couple of seconds in silence. it'd be a little more awkward if this was the first time you’ve done this but this feels like the hundredth time.
"i missed you," he breaks the silence, hand reaching out for yours.
you look at his hand briefly before looking up at him. there's no point in playing hard to get. he's already here. you both know what you’ve gotten into and you both don't care. at least not right now.
"i missed you too." you grab his hand.
you go back to him everytime.
