― Anne Carson (Euripides), Dead Poets Society (Final Script), Extraordinary Attorney Woo (Ep. 10), Anne Carson (H of H Playbook)
Young-woo's morning routine, as seen in EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO's opening credits. @gifevents #1: New Beginnings Day 1: Mornings
we don't talk enough about how young-woo's dad personally made her a facial expressions chart and how he labeled each picture. like he stood there making various expressions and printed them all out and glued them in front of her mirror she's so loveddd
extraordinary attorney woo is such an insane show. in the very first episode young woo and jun ho share a "waltz" of sorts as he helps her get out of the revolving door.
in the second episode it reveals that she calls him at all times of day and even walks him to the door of their work building (even if she's staying late) just to talk to him about her favorite thing
he sees her in a wedding dress in the same episode and is so stunned by how beautiful she is- wearing it, but also smiling so widely, and being her complete self by complaining about the discomfort of the material, and teasing him about "being in love" with her when they're just acting- that you can SEE him fall a little bit in love.
i love them soooo much

I understand where the "in real life, Young-woo would get fired because of her workplace behavior or not even get hired in the first place" criticisms come from but also did you miss the part where Young-woo did, in fact, struggle to find a job and only got hired because of a very contrived K-drama nepo baby plot shenanigan.
min-woo is so funny because he's a total selfish ass who only thinks of the law as a way to get ahead in life, but also the selfish ass thing is more or less a front because the reason he wants to get ahead in life is so he has the money to support his dad, whose health is really bad. and then he's also the absolute worst to young-woo both because of the autism and because he thinks she's a nepotisim hire, but he decides at the last minute that he can't destroy her career and he's also the only person who figures out, without having to be told, why she thinks she has to break up with jun-ho. even her own boyfriend didn't figure that one out, and it's largely because jun-ho does think of her as 'my autistic girlfriend', whereas min-woo thinks of her as 'my asshole coworker, who got her job because her dad knows somebody and her mom's some other somebody, and who is also a genius, which i hate because it makes me feel like i have to work ten times harder than i already am, and who's autistic, so she doesn't even notice when i'm insulting her, which is just annoying when i want to be mean' and thus is, ironically, capable of thinking of her as a whole and entire person rather than this fragile thing who does things for nonsensical reasons . so he hears she's broken up with jun-ho on their jeju trip and is like of course it's not because she didn't get to see some dolphins! and it has nothing to do with our boss except that she learned about his divorce and sees the similarities. and she got pressured into meeting your family who were not exactly supportive. it's easy. you idiots. and then he goes back to doing his normal obnoxious thing
i love you. on purpose.
sorry i'm thinking about Extraordinary Attorney Woo again (PLEASE GOD LET US HAVE A SEASON TWO) and just, the layers to young-woo and jun-ho's love story. i think about "loving me is hard" "it appears so" "but you're going to do it anyway?" "yes" so often because like. their lived experiences are so different that of course they run into issues. jun-ho doesn't always know what young-woo needs or where he stands with her, and she sometimes fails to see things from his POV- not maliciously, it's just not something that comes naturally to her, and she has to work on it. they have chemistry and a connection almost immediately but that doesn't mean it's easy, that doesn't mean they're perfectly in-sync. they have to work at it. and they make the choice, over and over again, to work at it, to work on themselves and their relationship, because they care about each other and want to be together, and sometimes the way you show your love and your compassion and your devotion is to admit, "i don't understand, but i'm going to try to meet you where you are."
"I'm not sure if I'm talking about the case or myself."
I forgot to post this, but some time ago I watched Extraordinary Attorney Woo and oh my god!! I'm so fucking obsessed!! Absolutely delighted to see an autistic girlie win
Watching "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" has made me realise my deep need for a romantic drama with an Autistic lead.
Please, this is so important to me, I need it in my life.
one thing i really love about extraordinary attorney woo is how young-woo doesn't fall into the neat little binary of what we think of as "high-functioning" or "low-functioning" autism (i.e., "autism you don't notice" vs. "autism you do notice", as it's often portrayed), because irl it's rarely that simple. young-woo is highly intelligent, can hold down a job and take care of herself, and overall holds her own - but she also can't "pass" for neurotypical, nor does she want to! she openly stims and has little rituals to help her avoid overstimulation. sometimes she gets overwhelmed in public and has to deal with it. she needs accommodations to manage in day-to-day life, and sometimes has to contend with people who don't understand why she needs them. she needs a support network like anyone else, which she fortunately has in the form of her father and closest friends, and she and her dad occasionally butt heads because he genuinely wants to help, but sometimes oversteps - because her disability is something he still doesn't 100% understand. but he does 100% support her and she knows she can always rely on him. when she was growing up, they sometimes had trouble connecting, but once he learned how to meet her where she was at, they established a bond that made young-woo feel loved and supported, even when her teachers weren't helping her.
i also love how young-woo is very up-front about her autism, and the ways it impacts her life, both for the better and in ways it makes life harder. one of my favorite moments is when another character (who's also coded as autistic) notices one of her rituals (pausing to inwardly count to "three" before stepping into an unfamiliar room) and tells her that he thinks it's awesome that she's self-assured enough to do what she needs to do to accommodate herself, even if other people think it's weird.
like it's not 100% perfect representation - i'm not sure what that would even look like - but i love how, along with the "case of the week" format, so much of the story is about young-woo navigating the world as a young autistic woman, both with her career and her personal life, and what a layered character she is. the fact that she's autistic doesn't feel like a gimmick or like a token effort at diversity; it's a big part of the story and her character arc, but it's not her entire personality, either.
