a tear slips
up your face
into your left eye
and you blink.
it’s gone
⠀
and i know we both
would go back and undo
everything
if only we could.

if i look back, i am lost

A Thorn Amidst the Roses, 1887, by James Sant (1820-1916)
Vicente Romero Redondo (Spanish, b. 1956). Pastel on paper.
yesterday,
when the wind carried
the scent of your home
i closed my eyes
and thought;
this is it
this is what happiness feels like
her hand shot upwards
her eyes filled with tears
& she hadn’t been hugged
in so many years
but there was her daughter
at 6 feet apart
and being conscientious
was suddenly hard
when she saw the tremble
in her mother’s strong chin
the winds took her caution
said, please come in
although we know better
and you’re old and grey
i want you to hug me
i want you to stay.
her hand shot upwards
her eyes filled with tears
& she hadn’t been hugged
in so many years
but there was her daughter
at 6 feet apart

was suddenly hard
Multnomah Falls by Albert Bierstadt
warmed by the fire in her eyes
i rest my weary limbs
on the mossy forest floor and think;
i am the soft earth
i am the gentle breeze
i am the sunlight and i am
the people bathing in it
and i will forever
be whole
what does the future hold? they ask
i say, it holds me
it holds me in its solid arms
so let me find myself in moments past
let me love my breath
until my last
let me be narcissus
for as long as i grow

is safe better than sorry?
i asked my friends, they nodded
let me get it, i said
i am young
i can do anything
let me get it
like icarus, i did not know my
life was a story and
i did not know
the malice of the gods
but i should have known
that hubris always
precedes the fall.

o flower, my flower
i watered your seeds
i bathed you in sunlight
and pulled all the weeds
but winter came early
and life isn’t fair
you withered too quickly
and left me no air
Henry Ryland
i don’t believe in real feelings
because fake ones don’t exist
of course, they don’t make sense to you
but tell me
have emotions ever listened to reason?
