Darth Vader by GUILLEM H. PONGILUPPIPRO.
Star Wars Characters Reimagined as Ancient Greek Statues by French Artist Travis Durden
Artist Travis Durden took this idea to an artistic level, using digital technology to sculpt five Star Wars figures out of faux-marble. The heads of each of the sculptures are pulled directly from the movie franchise, while the bodies are sourced from statues found within Paris’s Louvre. The new amalgamations display a softer side to the characters, Darth Vader now sporting tendrils of hair that fall from his once menacing mask, and a stormtrooper casually reads from an ancient text.
The artist behind the sculptures chooses to remain hidden, his artist’s name a mash-up of characters from two of his favorite cult films. [I can only guess where his last name comes from.] Durden is interested in also creating mash-ups within his work, opposite worlds converging to create an original composite. His Star Wars sculptures are his newest works, and can be seen in the exhibition “Contre Attaque,” or counter attack, currently at Galerie Sakura in Paris. Prints are available on Galerie Sakura’s website here.

Lava flows like these Hawaii’an ones are endlessly mesmerizing. This type of flow is gravity-driven; rather than being pushed by explosive pressure, the lava flows under its own weight and that of the lava upstream. In fact, fluid dynamicists refer to this kind of flow as a gravity current, a term also applied to avalanches, turbidity currents, and cold drafts that sneak under your door in the wintertime. How quickly these viscous flows spread depends on factors like the density and viscosity of the lava and on the volume of lava being released at the vent. As the lava cools, its viscosity increases rapidly, and an outer crust can solidify while molten lava continues to flow beneath. Be sure to check out the full video below for even more gorgeous views of lava. (Image/video credit: J. Tarsen, source; via J. Hertzberg)

Regata Storica, Venice, Day To Night. Venice is a city unlike any other, it’s culture, history, and stories are embedded into it’s very core. I set out to capture Venice on one of it’s proudest annual days, the Regata Storica festival. This, the final image, is composed of dozens of moments throughout the day, reflecting Venice’s magical transformation from day into night. I will be sharing more on what went into creating this and other final images from my current series, Day To Night, in my TED Talk this week at the TED Dream conference! Follow along @stephenwilkes as I share more from my travels and behind the scenes moments from the conference and Day To Night. #DayToNight #RegataStorica #Venice #StephenWilkes #TEDtalks #TED2016 via Instagram http://ift.tt/1TmIK5n
