The general public will enjoy pretty much any image that is rendered in a sufficiently verisimilitudinous way that they wont be made fun of for liking it, because pictures are inherently interesting.

When people are mad about "modern art" it is because they feel they have been cheated, and honestly they are right to feel that way, because they have been! They have been told over and over that their untrained gestures are worthless, denied a fundamental human capacity, only for someone else's imitation thereof to be held in high esteem (and, potentially, financial reward) for purely social reasons.

The problem is that this shame is leveraged against the art, rather than the art being leveraged against the shame, because the shame brings benefit to the powerful. The shame allows you to sell the leaves to cover your nakedness, you see.
