“ oh, well, then, neither do i. ” there is more truth to that confession than meets the eye. ved hasn’t taken anything recreationally. his cluttered mind, his easily drifting attention, all that and more prevent him from needing anything of the sort. even when mellowed down, lacking the adrenaline to do anything within a set timeframe, he still can’t stay in one place. perhaps in a former life ved was a rabbit, always moving, always hectic as the cartoonish stereotype goes. or perhaps even worse, crackling electricity, untamed, wild, everywhere it can reach, nowhere it can stay still. a wide grin returns to his face, nodding as celeste thanks him for merely speaking the truth, his truth, their truth. she was definitely, as much as he can tell, quite the beauty.
when she changes the subject, he follows. down into the rabbit hole. not as curious alice but as the late, stressed white rabbit, with the woman who has caught his eye the very time the creature chases, almost obsessively. for ved, however, he is yet to reach that point. give it some time. “ tell who? ” the mere mention of the pronoun her confuses ved. all his attention, his brain power, has been focused on the woman before her. everything else, including logic and rational thinking outside of logic, if there were even such things, were thrown out the store windows. did she mean a girlfriend? her mother? his mother? his ex? ved gulps at that last part. why would she –– and then he remembers, as if his mind had just clocked in to work. “ it’s celeste, right? i’m sorry. i’m an idiot. i’m ved, ” he offers an unsolicited hand, conveniently forgetting she had called him by his name much earlier.
there were far too many variables in this situation that celeste had debated bringing up. for starters, ved was maiken’s ex, and even having this interaction felt strange. as far as celeste knew they were on fine terms, but from what she’d gathered from her short experience at college thus far was there was a code of sorts, an unspoken rule not to entertain something like this let alone anything more. then, of course, there was the obvious. she was, by all means, spoken for, and quite frankly while she appreciated a compliment as much as anyone else, she wasn’t quite sure where the line was.
it was only a compliment, right ? there was no need for her to divulge her personal details and information over something like that. it wasn’t a proposal. “ marsha. ” she clarifies, surprised at how sure her voice sounds when she speaks. “ celeste, yeah. hi ved. ” as flustered as she is inside, she reaches out to shake his hand without thinking. and she regrets it the moment she does. her frazzled state of mind and the uncertainty in her means her touch is nothing short of electric, and she curses the moment she feels herself shock ved. “ ah, fuck. sorry, i should’ve warned you that that happens. ” she snaps back and rubs her temples, forcing herself to wind down. she did not need to be zapping another man’s shirt off in re-reads, especially not this one’s.
