i kinda love how makoto and ei embody matters so different yet complementary in their divine ideals. makoto, being the god of transience, inadvertently is tied to all kinds of ends - from rot and wilt of all nature to death of living beings. at the same time, she is known to be non-confrontational, leaving battles mostly to her sister. ei, on her part, being the bringer of transience as the fighter / samurai, bestows her divine ideal of eternity as death is permanent and eternal.

it strikes me as interesting how the term of euthymia is attached to ei.

generally speaking, the word euthymia comes from two greek words: "eu" - well, and "thymo", soul or emotion. furthermore, the related word "thymos" has four additional meanings: life energy; feelings and passions; desires and inclinations; and thought or intelligence.

as wikipedia states, in psychology "euthymia is a normal, tranquil mental state or mood", in bipolar disorders considered "neither manic nor depressive, yet distinguishable from the state of healthy people". it's also "the “baseline” of other cyclical mood disorders". in modern psychology, it is measured by "autonomy, environmental mastery, satisfactory interactions with other people and the milieu, the individual’s style and degree of growth, development or self-actualization, the attitudes of an individual toward his/her own self" (marie jahoda).

and finally, there's the philosophical part - euthymia, according to democritus, means that "one is satisfied with what is present and available, taking little heed of people who are envied and admired and observing the lives of those who suffer and yet endure".

basically, we have three aspects of ei's search for euthymia:

the emotional aspect of achieving and keeping high spirits and positive energy;

the psychological aspect within a goal to achieve a balance, autonomy and sense of calmness;

and the philosophical aspect which keeps one unfazed by any exterior influences and content with life
