Pray to the Lord so that he will send the snakes away from us. So Moses prayed for the people. Numbers 21:7b
When we come across this passage in the Bible, especially in Lent, it is jarring. Why would God send snakes to the people of Israel for…

Lamar State College Port Arthur, Texas
Last Friday I was privledged to speak at Lamar State College Port Arthur about the role and function of a chaplain in health care to a class of nursing students. The students were great and asked some insightful questions.
Thanks again to Lamar State College for their invitation.
In Christ,
Rev. Evan

Book Update 2015
I know that it has been a while since I have given you an update about the book. Thank you for patience!
Here is where we stand.
Today, I received the “marked up” copy edited version of my manuscript. I will be reviewing it and answering some questions about the text this week. The draft will then be sent back to the publisher for type setting.
After type setting the copy will be sent back…

An Apology to the Church
Latest piece picked up by Sojourners
I have a confession to make. I have not always been very fair with the church, and for that I apologize.
In an effort to share my love and passion for my faith, I have picked and poked and criticized the church, and maybe that is a bit unfair. I have been a minister going on six years, and during that time, I have been the best and the worst that the church…

Texas Independence Day 2015
Texas Independence Day 2015
For the residents of the other 49 states in the Union, today is just another Monday. For the residents of the great state (and former country) of Texas today is more important. On March 2, 1836, the Republic of Texas was born.
Happy Texas Independence Day!
In Christ,
Rev. Evan

I am excited to give my first guest lecture tomorrow at Lamar State Collage in Port Arthur, Texas tomorrow. I will be speaking on the role and function of the chaplain in health care settings to nursing students.
I have been going over my notes and tweaking my PowerPoint presentation and I remembered this gem from The Office.
May it brighten your day as you strive toward the prize that is the…

Lent 2015 Reading
Lenten Reading
This Lent I decided on top of my Lenten Devotional I would take time to a read a book. The book had to have a practical application to my ministry and life.
After searching the internet I settled on Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now by Walter Brueggemann. I look forward to reading it and will post a review when I am finished.
In Christ,
Rev. Evan

I know that a lot of people do not like the President’s policies or whatever, but this type of criticism is a new one for me. I have heard people in passing joke about the fact that they think the President is the “Anti-Christ” (a word not even used in the book of Revelation but that is topic for another day) but never anything like this.

It Was Like This When I Got Here
It Was Like This When I Got Here
A lot has been written about the decline of the mainline church over the years. There are numerous theories have been passed around. Nearly every pew-sitting faithful Christian in America has her or his own opinion. As a minister I have heard a lot of these complaints from the masses; the request is simple. They want the church to be the center of social and political life as it seemed to be in…

Finding Religion In A Fortune Cookie?
Finding Religion In A Fortune Cookie? #ccdoc
Can you find religion in the American made tradition of a fortune cookie? After church we went out for Chinese by request from my now 5-year-old; I opened my fortune cookie and found this message.
Generally these fortunes aren’t really fortunes at all but often cliché sayings that are supposed to make you feel better for eating too many egg rolls. They have become so silly that people have…

Lenten Devotional #ccdoc
In the Disciples of Christ we have a unique congregation that many people do not know about. Fig Tree Christian Church (DOC) is an entirely online church… that’s right, online church. It’s a really interesting concept one that seems to be catching on; recently Fig Tree annouced that they were accepting memberships.
From their website:
Fig Tree Christian is a place where we can talk openly about…

Remembering Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) #ccdoc #mlk #MLKDay
Today we pause to remember a man whose faith and conviction propelled him to do more every day.
The world is a better place because of the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This does not mean we still do not have work to do; we must continue his mission of love, justice and peace in the world around us.
In Christ,
Rev. Evan
