Nico smiled at the waitress when she came by the table, his eyes lingering a bit too long before settling back on Eva. “Oh, you know. Life,” he laughed, leaning back into his seat and looking forward at her. “I sold a song over the weekend. Guess I could be celebrating that,” he said, shrugging. “Why aren’t you celebrating?” he asked, leaning forward again, hunching over the coffee in front of him.
“Well, that’s good!” She smiled when he said that he’d sold a song. She had no idea how all of that worked, or how much songs typically sold for, but any sale had to be a good sale. At his question, she shrugged her shoulders. Eva had been in a funk as of late, and she wasn’t sure how she was going to get herself out. “I dunno. Don’t really have much to be celebrating.” She told him honestly.

“I think the party’s just about over, bud. Maybe just coffee or water from here on out.”
Nico rolled his eyes at Eva’s words, but couldn’t help giggling. He shook out some salt onto the table and drew in it with his fingertip. “No, I don’t have HIV. Never had an STD,” he announced proudly, licking his salt tipped finger and smirking. When she spoke, he almost laughed. She didn’t know just how like him this was. She’d just only ever seen him high, and he was totally different drunk. “I’m fine, yeah. Just celebrating,” he shrugged.
When he said that he was only celebrating, she found it a little bit more acceptable. Still, she wondered if he had an actual reason. He didn’t really seem to be in his right mind. “What is it that you’re celebrating, Nico?” She asked, taking a sip of the coffee that the waitress had just dropped off.
“Still a virgin, so.”
“That leaves soup or tea still on the table then.”
“Is this your way of telling me that you have HIV?” he teased, giggling foolishly. “You get me drunk before dropping the bombshell.”
“Yeah, tack the HIV on along with the chlamydia I got last year.” She spoke sarcastically. Eva was painfully sober, as she had a test first thing in the morning. It was hard enough to get a passing grade without adding alcohol into the mix. “You’re stuck with me, though. Better get used to the itching and burning now.”
Nico looked up at Eva, his eyes heavy with laughter. “Nah, eva, I’m good!” he grinned loudly, spreading his arms at his sides. “And you shouldn’t make fun of HIV, Eva!” he scolded, pointing a finger at her. “That’s serious stuff.”
“Not making fun, just genuinely asking.” She defended herself, leaning back into the booth. She ran her eyes up and down Nico before shaking her head. “Is everything okay, dude? This isn’t like you.”
“Uhm Excuuuse me” she dragged out her words, “I know I am perfectly clean thank you. I get tested monthly.”
“I’m not necessarily sure that’s something to be proud of.” She spoke. “The monthly testing, not the being clean part. You should be very proud that you don’t have any STDs.”
“Can I get you anything?” Eva asked her intoxicated friend across the diner table. It was a Wednesday night, for God’s sake. They were a mess. “Some soup, tea... an HIV test?”
He let out a sigh, feeling defeated from the situation. “It was for Baylee. I made a mistake for someone I love, shouldn’t that count for something?” Walking across the parking lot with her felt like he was walking to an unspoken grave; he was very much alive, but after tonight, he felt dead to her. “I know, I fucked up, Eva. I did. Thank you…” He knew she would rather be somewhere else, and after hearing what trouble he caused her, he felt guilty. But he was thankful because no one else would have shown up. He didn’t want to worry Baylee and he didn’t want to call anyone else. It was only her, his best friend, that he wanted to bail him out. “Thank you for being there. Even if I’m a bad person.”
“It counts in thoughtfulness, but wouldn’t it be more effective to just get a job to pay for them? Or at least steal money from someone while they’re not looking, and I don’t mean me. You’re less likely to get caught if you’re paying with stolen money, rather than stealing the product outright.” Eva told him, completely aware of the fact that she was rambling. She made even less sense when she was tired than when she was fully awake, as though that could even be possible. When he started getting all mopey on her, Eva sighed, reaching out and running a hand through his mop of curls reassuringly. “You know I’m here for you anytime.” She promised, pulling out onto the main road from the parking lot. “Did you at least get to keep the brushes you stole?” Eva asked out of curiosity. She really had no idea how arrests worked.
