Remember when Taehyung said that he thinks there are rabbits on the moon, and the whole fandom turned it into a meme?
What if I told you that his story is not groundless and that there is really a rabbit on the moon? You think I am crazy too don’t you? well keep reading dear:
WHAT IS THAT MARKING ON THE MOON?
If you look closely there is a huge marking on the moon, for many in the West, it’s said there’s a man in the moon. But in Korea and much of Asia, the dark spots on the moon’s surface are said to resemble a rabbit. In fact, most Korean children can tell you about the daltokki (달토끼), or moon rabbit.
The moon rabbit is, simply put, the markings on the moon that look like a rabbit pounding in a pestle. This is what is known in science as a ’pareidolia’, or an image or sound that appears to be something significant.
IS THE MOON RABBIT WELL KNOWN IN KOREA?
The moon rabbit in folklore is a rabbit that lives on the Moon. The story exists in many cultures, prominently in Asian folklore and Aztec mythology. One of the biggest holidays in Korea is Chuseok, a mid-autumn festival that is celebrated on the 15th of August on the lunar calendar. In Korea, you cannot celebrate the mid-autumn festival without thinking about the Moon Rabbit. The Moon Rabbit has become a symbol for this special holiday.
HOW DID THE RABBIT END UP ON THE MOON?
(For Koreans) The story goes that the Rabbit once lived in a village alongside a Fox and a Monkey. The three of them devoted themselves to Buddhism and spent most of their time studying and practicing. The Emperor of the Heavens asked them to bring him food to test their faith. The Fox decided to catch a fish and the Monkey decided to bring him fruits. The Rabbit, on the other hand, could not find anything but grass so the Rabbit decided to jump into a fire to offer himself up. The Emperor was touched by this act of commitment so he appoints the Rabbit as the guardian of the moon.
V MENTIONED NOT JUST ONE RABBIT, ISN’T THERE JUST ONE RABBIT ON THE MOON?
Originally, there was only one Rabbit that would appear in the story and the people thought the rabbit was lonely so a modern day version of the story has two rabbits on the moon, happily making rice cakes which make it even more significant during the mid-autumn festival where the friends and family come together.
All of this explain what may have influenced V’s thoughts in the past. Believing in the existence of rabbits on the moon is still an innocent thought. It’s as if a grown up believed in Santa or fairies but even as adults don’t we all believe in things we never saw? Like ghosts, angels, god … but little people mock such things because they are more common. Kim Taehyung is really a one of a kind. He has a splendid imagination and sense of creativity, Which made him appreciate art and fashion. He is mostly portrayed in memes and scenarios as the “dumb” one in BTS. But sometimes I think “aren’t we the idiots who fail to understand him?”
