“Comment tu s’appele*?”, he asks you, and you shift in discomfort. No matter how many times you go through it, conversations in French always scared the shit out of you.
“Je m’appele Y/N, et vous?”, you retort, and Lafayette nods.
“Je m’appele Lafayette, ma chère. Enchanté”, he says, looking at you, and you press your lips against eachother.
“Moi aussi?”, you reply, not so safe about what you’re saying, and Lafayette raises an eyebrow at you. “Ok, I have no idea of what I’m doing here.”
“You were doing well!”, he assures you. “Last time was so great, Y/N, if you could just repeat it – ”
“This is the fifth time today, Lafayette. Let’s just take a break, ok?”, you cut him off, to what he shrugs and lays down. The two of you were sitting on your bed, facing eachother, as he tried one more time to teach you proper French. You two had been studying together practically every day after school for a couple of weeks now, which was weird to say the least. Lafayette wasn’t in your circle of friends, and you weren’t in his. You only knew who he hung out with, the Hamilsquad, because they were about the most popular guys in school. There were some rumors concerning the reasons you started spending so much time together – almost every girl in school was concerned about Lafayette’s relationships –, but so far nothing much had happened. And, as you discovered you really enjoyed spending time with him, you couldn’t care less.
You smile. Had someone told you, two months ago, Gilbert du Mortier would be on your bed, staring at your ceiling after a tiring French lesson, you’d have laughed at their face. Yet, here he was. Worse of all, you liked it.
“Why do you want me to learn French so hard, anyways?”, you ask him, spinning on the bed and laying down so your head is right next to his. He raises his eyebrows and looks at you, a playful smirk on his face.
“Let’s say my pick-up lines are way better in French, bijou”, he replies and you roll your eyes in a chuckle.
“Ok, French Fry, let’s not get too cocky here”, is all you say, still smiling widely.
“I could still hit on you in French now, but you just wouldn’t understand anyways”, Lafayette ignores you, shrugging.
“Isn’t that half of the fun of being a foreigner? Speaking a language no one else does?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well”, you shift on the bed, lying face down as you stare at your headboard, his eyes still on you. “You can say stuff to people and they won’t understand you. If I spoke French, I could’ve told you that other day that I wanted to talk to you without the mocking from your friends.”
He chuckles. “That was actually pretty funny. You got as red as a paprika.”
“It was not funny, French Fry”, you tell him, but a smile plays on your lips.
“It was”, he reassures you and you turn your head to him, who quickly shifts his eyes to the ceiling. “Actually, most of the time, I’m trying to be understood, so I guess that’s not a foreigner privilege or whatever you’d call.”
“You got my point”, you shrug.
“I most certainly did, ma bijou”, Lafayette says, nodding as you lay on your back once more. An unusual silence falls over you, and you just look at him. He’s still staring at the ceiling, looking thoughtful, a faded smile on his lips. His toned arms are behind his head, his elbow right by your side, and you can see the lines of his muscles under his thin and tight sweater. In a recognizably rare occasion, his hair is not in a ponytail, so there are some curls almost tickling your face. You resist the impulse to play with them, keeping your hands together over your belly and crossing your legs. All of a sudden, Lafayette seems to realize you’re staring at him and clears his throat. You look at the ceiling, asking yourself where your decency is.
“I… I’m sorry”, you say sheepishly.
“Don’t be”, he answers in a jokey tone. “All girls fall for me at some point. You’ve actually resisted my charm for quite long, it’s incredible.”
You roll your eyes. “Asshole.”
“At least, I’m not Thomas Conway”, he points, and the two of you share a laughter. He then grunts and sits up, and so do you. “I should get going, Y/N. My host parents must be asking themselves why I’m so late.”
“Yeah, probably”, you nod, suddenly sad, realizing it’s already dark outside. With an internal sigh, you get up. “Come on, Frenchie, I’ll take you to the door.”
“By all means, lead the way”, he says, picking up his backpack and a textbook you two were studying earlier. You walk out of your room, leading him to the living room where your mom watches TV.
“Already going, Lafayette?”, she asks him, but you know it’s not only for she’s willing to be educated. Your mom actually liked Lafayette a lot, mostly for she thought French was the most beautiful language and was all in for you dating a Frenchman. You’d roll eyes at her every time she brought the subject up, even though your secretly agreed.
“Oui, madame”, he politely answers, already at the door with you. “I was just telling Y/N that I’m almost late for dinner.”
“I see”, your mom nods. “Well, you’re always welcome to come back here. My family would love to meet you. You’re always here, but you and Y/N insist on staying on her room doing God-knows-what.”
“Studying, mom”, you assure her, holding back a facepalm in embarrassment, but Lafayette only seems to find it funny. “Studying.”
“Whatever you say, honey”, she giggles, and you give her a glare. Mom, please stop. I’ll do the dishes if you just stop right now., you wish you could tell her. She seems to get the bigger picture. “Anyways. Drive safely, Lafayette!”
He waves at her as you unlock the door as quickly as you possibly can. “Thank you, madame L/N!”
“Off with you, French Fry”, you mutter under your breath, only loud enough for Laf to hear, and he gets out of your house. You follow him into the cold-ish fall weather, seeing his car a few steps away. You wish you could tell him to stay longer, but you know you can’t. You’re only a friend, after all, nothing more. “See you at school?”
“Tomorrow is Saturday, Y/N”, he chuckles.
“I guess I don’t see you at school, then”, you retort, rubbing your forehead. You’ve been so lost in the calendar, lately. “Monday?”
He shrugs, drifting his weight from one foot to the other. “I actually was wondering if you’d have any compromises tomorrow night.”
You almost laugh over his shyness. If there’s one thing Gilbert du Mortier wasn’t, that thing was shy. Yet, here he was, pressing his (very beautiful) lips against eachother and struggling to keep his head up. Why was he making such a fuzz, anyways? It was no huge deal, he was just asking you out.
Wait.
He was asking you out.
The perception made your heart skip a beat, maybe two. Was Lafayette asking you out? You suddenly felt as self-conscious as he looked, holding your own hands in anxiety. Goddamit, was that really happening?
“Um, no. No, I don’t think I do”, you reply as you feel your heart doing something that reminds you of tap-dancing inside your chest. “Why?”
He bites his lip, half of his face showing happiness and the other half showing anxiety. “Um, nothing. I just wanted to know what you’re up to, nothing else.”
Your heart falls inside your chest, heavy. Of course. Why would Lafayette want to be out with you, of all people? You forced yourself to look casual, and sound so. “Sure.”
“See you, Y/N”, he smiles, gesture which you try to return, before kissing the top of your head and turning around to walk to his car. You sadly watch it as he turns the engine on and leaves your driveway with a short honk, smiling at you one last time. When he turns a corner, the red car leaving your sight, you allow yourself to go back inside and maybe cry for the next forty minutes.
On the moment you step into your house, however, your mom looks at you. “That Lafayette is truly a good influence, Y/N. You should bring him over more often. Certainly better than that Conway boy.”
“Mom, not now”, you mumble, locking the door, but she decides to ignore you.
“I mean, yes, the ponytail is kind of weird for me, but his accent is just charming. Don’t you agree?”, she continues, and you sigh.
“I like the accent. Can I go now?”
She leans her head to the side, realizing something’s wrong, but seeing that you don’t want to talk about it a well. “Sure, honey.”
“Thanks, mom”, you reply, weakly smiling before heading to your room. When you’re almost at the door, you hear her voice again.
“Y/N, sweetie! Come here, I almost forgot it!” You sigh as you spin on your hells, going back to the living room. She’s now standing by the couch, a piece of paper in her hands. She looks at you with sparkles on her eyes. “Lafayette dropped this at the doorstep. I forgot to tell you about it!”
You run her way to her, grabbing the paper from her hands. The first thing you recognize is Lafayette’s calligraphy, on the outside of the folded paper, in the words “It’s hard to let go of some habits, non, bijou?” You giggle a bit, biting your lip in precipitation as you finish unfolding the paper. “That fancy restaurant you like, Amelie’s, has an open table. Tomorrow, 8p.m. Dress accordingly, bijou. With love. – French Fry.”
You let out a squeak as you finish reading it, feeling your mom’s stare upon you. “He’s asked me out, mom! Lafayette’s asked me out!”
She smiles. “That’s great, sweetie!”, her arms wrap around you in a hug as you try not to scream. “But it’s a bit strange he’s done it like that, don’t you think?”
A smile grows on your lips, and you repeat what you’ve read, fully conscious your mom won’t understand it. “It’s hard to let go of some habits.”
May I make a request for a reader x Connor Murphy where they are dating but one day in the middle of class there was a lock down, but reader had a panic attack so Murphy does his best to calm down reader. Please and thank you!!!!

-‘Words fail’ easy one, use as hyperbole. Classic is ‘words fail to describe how much I love DEH:
-Legit asking for a physical map OR asking for help with life e.g. ‘anybody happen to know how the hell to do this’
-‘for forever’ easy one again. Can slip into a lot of places, can be v subtle even accidental.
-something is or feels either so big or so small. Bonus if u do one right after the other.
-anything to do with Windows and waving.
-CARS and driving in general are good sources. Good ones such as ‘learned to slam on the break’ or 'we let you sit behind the wheel’
-literally all of the compliments in If I Could Tell Her. Bonus points for spreading positivity.
-TREES
-“Shaving cream, rubber bands, mattress, repeat.” Don’t try to be subtle with this one. It’s better without context and everyone knows it.
-stuff about disappearing and/or being found. Always nice.
-Good For You. Title works as well as quotes, like it’s all quotable. An angry reference, use with caution. Bonus points for sarcasm.
-Literally just tell an actual fucking lie.
-'It was a February day’ works any time of the year. A little specific tho. Alternatively, 'end of may or early June’ has much more versatility in terms of use, but making it work outside the specified time can be a little tricky.
-driving country roads, scoops and a la mode, open fields, etc.
-ANXIETY
-eating bath bombs. It’s hard to do subtly but with practise it becomes easier. Good to use when the topic of conversation is already about eating stuff, specifically stuff that isn’t food. That may not happen that often, but at least when it does you’ll be prepared.
-'step out step out of the sun if you keep getting burned’. Great to use if someone is actually sunburned; it’s sound advice but still slightly odd to say in conversation, especially if you sing and then act like nothing happened. If no one is sunburned, metaphorical use also works but maybe don’t give it as actual advice given that it comes from a desperate, barely functioning mess of internal pain and mental illness, however much of a precious bean he may also be.
-cast names are great. Examples include 'clear as Kristolyn’, 'Roland’ which works in many wheel-related contexts, and 'Jesus fucking Christ why are there so many fucking people called Michael who the fucking hell comes up with this shit why-
-character names function similarly well. Examples include 'Heidi’ often in the context of hiding or greeting someone, 'Evan’ great in text form as a substitute for typing 'even’, and 'the I n S a N e L y C o O l Jared Kleinman’ and no don’t try to make this one subtle you fucking coward.
- U-Haul trucks. If someone else talks about them, just start sobbing.
-And everything is ok. Only acceptable use is when almost nothing is ok.
-Nipple rubbing.
-Glove. Singular.
-If anyone asks you to sign something, just write ‘CONNOR’ as large as possible. Bonus points if it’s a legal document.
-’Oh my God I fucking love Ben Platt.’ Best sent as a text at 12:20AM with no context trust me I know from experience.
-Grow a Bean Plant.
-Suddenly burst out crying uncontrollably. Bonus points if it’s in public.
-Memorise the entire play and, without warning, perform it in public all by yourself.
-If you are pressed for time, singing the entire soundtrack is also acceptable.
-If you are extra-super pressed for time, pick a single extract from one of the songs and sing it as loudly as you can. Personal favourite is ‘FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE’ (For Forever).
-Hate Donald Trump.
-’Another cup of coffee, and watch it all crash and burn.’ 10/10 people will relate.
-Literally just break your arm.
-If someone blows out a candle: ‘nO oNe ShOuLd FLICKER OUT…’
-If someone asks you to do something ‘But tell me, tell me what fooooor,’
-*Someone says something wasn’t true*: ‘Don’t say it wasn’t true’ (these are to be sung. Don’t fucking back down you’re in too far now)
-If all else fails, just pick any quote in verbatim and say it with no warning or context, then continue with the conversation as normal.

i showed deh to one of my closest friends and we like watched the b**t together and i was kinda in the middle of an emotional breakdown and she asked me what was happening and i couldn’t really explain and said i’m not too sure of why i’m this bad rn and she said it’s not my fault and sent me you will be found i am SO EMOTIONAL this is the reason deh is so important yall
