What is a Cosmic Witch? 🌌🌠✨

Taken from an ask I received. 

A cosmic witch, by my own definition, is a witch who utilizes planetary and celestial energy in their practice. While some witches tend to feel a connection with elements like earth, air, fire, and water, cosmic witches feel this connection with celestial bodies instead.

Some practitioners who practice planetary magick focus on the seven classic “planets” (I know the sun and moon aren’t planets but: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn), whereas a cosmic witch includes the planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto as well.

A cosmic witch also includes the energy of other celestial bodies when appropriate, such as comets, asteroids, meteors, supernovas, stars/star clusters, galaxies, black holes, etc. We may not be able to see these specific occurrences with the naked eye (most of the time), but we know they exist and harness energy from them when we see fit.

A cosmic witch not only uses astrology in their practice, but also astronomy. The big difference here is that astrology is basically a form of divination using the placement of celestial bodies to analyze our emotions and behaviors. Astronomy, on the other hand, is a science that examines the positions, motions, and properties of these celestial bodies.

Astrology may be a cosmic witch’s preferred form of divination, but other mediums can be used. I like to use an oracle deck whose meanings are based on astrology, but I also enjoy using Elder Futhark runes and tarot cards. Perhaps a cosmic witch with a strong affinity for Lunar or Neptunian energy might take up water scrying; a cosmic witch who connects with Jupiter may want to use a pair of dice or playing cards; a cosmic witch who connects with Plutonian energy may utilize reading bones as a form of divination, etc.

Cosmic witches may worship deities and call upon them for assistance, the most common and relatable being those of Greco-Roman origin considering the planets were named after Roman and Greek Gods, but it is not required and we are not bound by religion. I personally worship the planets themselves, with a focus on Saturn.

Aside from deities, the belief in alien beings is totally plausible in the same way that some witches believe in fae or angels.

Cosmic witches are not limited to what kind of items they use in their practice: herbs, crystals, incense, sigils, charged water, and other things can be used to utilize and represent celestial energy.

The timing used for spells can be based on a variety of things, such as planetary positions/alignments, lunar cycles, days of the week as they correspond to the planet the day was named for, or planetary hours.

Astral travel is useful for cosmic witches if they decide to travel within the cosmos, being able to “visit” and visualize the different celestial bodies in their own way.

Cosmic witches may use celestial energy to ground, center, and cleanse themselves (and other objects), instead of “earth grounding” or other common methods.

Cosmic Witchcraft 101 🌠

One of the questions I find myself answering a lot is “how do I get into cosmic witchcraft?” Although @phaesphore has a really good guide (here), I thought I’d write out a few of my own suggestions. 

Who:

Who can be a cosmic witch?

Anyone can be a cosmic witch! The main aspects of cosmic witchcraft include working with the various celestial bodies included in the cosmos, and harnessing energy from them depending upon your intent. If you feel drawn to the cosmos and the vastness of outer space, then cosmic witchcraft is definitely for you. 

What & Why:

Figure out what aspects of cosmic witchcraft that you are drawn to

Is it your fascination with outer space? Is it the desire for a spiritual relationship with the cosmos? There are many reasons someone might be drawn to this practice, so do some digging and figure out yours. 

Which celestial bodies do you want to work with and why? 

This ranges from planets, to stars, to constellations, and various deep space objects. Each celestial body has its own set of correspondences and associations, some that may resonate more with you than others. 

Still at a loss? Complete your birth chart and figure out your dominant planet - birth charts show the alignment of the planets at the time of your birth. Each person has a dominant planet, which can be found in more detailed birth charts that you can complete online. 

To find your dominant planet, go to Astro.com > click “extended chart selection” on the right hand side > fill out the necessary information > choose “Pullen/Astrolog” > from the dropdown menu, select “simple chart delineation by Walter Pullen” > scroll about ½ or ¾ of the way down the page until you find a section that lists the percentages of the planets in your chart > the planet with the highest percentage would be considered your dominant planet.

You don’t necessarily have to be outside under the night sky to successfully perform a cosmic spell or harness cosmic energy. If you choose to perform cosmic magick indoors, use some visual or auditory tools to help you out; i.e. spacey music, a picture of space on your computer, a space poster on the wall behind your altar, etc.

🌞What Is Litha?

🌻 Litha is the celebration of the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The sun god is thriving and at his most vibrant peak, giving warmth to the earth and growth all around. We are celebrating the potential and successes that surround us. From now on the days will begin to become shorter again and darkness will begin to take over. The summer and warmth are still sticking around for a while, though, and it is still a very happy occasion. We are celebrating the pregnancy of the Triple Goddess with the Horned God. The Oak King is currently ruling the waxing half of the year while the Holly King is ruling the waning half of the year. The Holly King and the Oak King are battling with each other and the Holly King will eventually overrule the Oak King. Litha is a time for important magick and major spell work that needs to be put into action; It’s the best time to complete any huge magickal workings that need tackling. Before the darker days return, we must celebrate.

🌻 Litha comes at such a positive time of year and your celebrations will reflect this.

🌞Activities

🌻 Tackle the most challenging and most anticipated spells and rituals at midsummer, the ones that require the most energy from you; what better time to do it than when the world’s energies are at their peak! It’s the best time of the year for rituals to do with fire,faery magick, love, passion, energy and luck for the warmer times to come.

🌻 It’s also a good time to renew any tools or create or purchase any extra magickal tools you may require.

🌻Throw a midsummer bonfire or have a fire ritual. Or organize an outside gathering to simply enjoy the sun! There are loads of different ways that you can do this, a traditional midsummer bonfire would (obviously) be outside, although if this is not an option, a wood burner inside would also be fine. Burn pieces of old oak, light them on the evening before midsummer, then let them burn out as they reach the morning. It is also common to scatter herbs on the fire. Some Wiccans also burn the nine sacred types of wood (birch, rowan, ash, alder, willow, hawthorn, oak, holly and hazel) to bring them good luck and a good harvest. During the midsummer bonfire they would jump over the fire, then let the fire burn down completely and sometimes collect ashes from the fire and scatter them on the fields or on their herb garden to bring good fortune in the harvesting season coming in the near future. You could also keep some ashes for luck within spell work or rituals.

🌻 Create a god’s eye: it is typically made from wool or string and its purpose is to give protection and luck for the darker and colder days to come. Hang the god’s eye above your altar or on your door.

🌻 Go for a walk and enjoy the peak of summer! Collect things from the natural world that you need for magickal workings and to place at your altar. Have a picnic or barbecue or even just go to the beach or go for a bike ride.

🌻 If you work with the fae or just like to appreciate them, midsummer is the time for the faery rede. At this time, the fae will be riding magickal animals across the countryside, so hang out, either outside your house or in a nearby field, Bells and offerings such as sparkly decorations and food can be used to create the perfect area for the fae.

🌞Altar Ideas

🌻 Light green, yellow, gold and red candles to represent the sun god at his peak and the green earth at its fullest.

🌻 Decorate your altar with summer flowers such as sunflowers, carnations,poppies and hydrangeas.

🌻 Place a ring of flowers around your altar or around specific items for protection.

🌻 Pictures of the sun or ornaments symbolizing the sun honour the sun god being at his peak.

🌻 Oak leaves represent the Oak King, who has been ruling for this hald of the year, but will be laid to rest soon. Oak in different forms can be relevant to Litha.

🌻 Gold, yellow and orange ribbons and cloth can be draped at your altar.

🌻 Warm-colored vegetables such as butternut squash,sweet potatoes, carrots and tomatoes are all great to eat around this time of the year. They represent warmth and the wonderful produce we receive from the summer.

☀️Sun Meditations☀️

🌞Drawing in Sun Energy Meditation🌞:

This can be done right before any kind of Sun magic or working with Sun deities. It’s also a easy way to recharge your personal energies. If you’re tired and in need of an energy boost during the day use this exercise to recharge your energy levels. It’s also an excellent way to raise energy for any type of healing work

🌞If possible, sit outside in a sunny spot where you will not be disturbed or, if it’s cold outside, stand by a window where the Sun’s light can shine on you. Sit in a comfortable position.

🌞 Close your eyes. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Take 3 deep breaths in-and-out and allow your body to relax.

🌞Turn your hands palm up, raise them to the sky (if that’s comfortable, just resting them on your lap, palms open, works just as well). See the Sun’s energy streaming towards you, and then draw it between your hands until you hold a fiery, golden orb of light.

🌞Slowly lower your hands. As you do, see the Sun’s energy filling your body. See the Sun’s energy filling your head then lower your hands to your chest and see it filling your heart in the core of your being.

🌞Lower your hands again and see the Sun’s energy fill the lower part of your body, going down the soles of your feet. Repeat as many times as you wish.

🌍Grounding Sun Meditation☀️:

This meditation is my favorite way to ground. The sun and earth work in harmony to bring you balance and strength.

🌍 If possible, sit outside in a sunny spot where you will not be disturbed or, if it’s cold outside, stand by a window where the Sun’s light can shine on you. Sit in a comfortable position.

☀️Hold your hands palms up. See a ray of golden light shining on you. Concentrate on the light. Concentrate on emotions being felt and physical sensations. Feel or imagine its warmth on your skin.

🌍Take a deep breath, and as you do, see the sunlight filling you. Take 2 more deep breaths, or until you feel filled with sunlight.

☀️Now place your hands Palm down on the ground to either side of you. Imagine reaching down through the Earth - down, down to the fiery core of the planet.

🌍Take a deep breath and, pulling up the fires that are at the heart of the Earth, take 2 more deep breaths until you are filled with the fires of the Earth.

☀️Place your palms over your heart. See the golden sunlight in the fires at the core of the Earth mix and blend as they fill in circulate through your being.

☀️Say or think:

Fires above, fires below

Within, without I am whole

WHAT THE COLOURS MEAN. RED ———— Strong emotions or stress. Those getting over an illness may have red. Also ambition.

PINK———– Found in very compassionate people. It indicates love and kindness.

ORANGE——— Shows happiness, vitality, joy and laughter. The person should be open-minded.

Yellow———— Shows self-expression and optimism. Round the head represents lots of brainwork.
