Thought of the day: Comparison is the thief of joy
This came from my co-worker Ally, when we were chatting about envy, and she is so right. No matter where you go and what you get, someone will always have it better, at least from your limited perspective.
It’s impossible not to make comparisons. But they will never make you happy. So next time you do, stop and think about something great in your life. And then get off Facebook for a couple days.
People read books for different reasons. I respect that. Some read for comfort. And some of my former readers have said their life is hard, their mother is sick, their dog died, and they read fiction to escape. They don’t want to get hit in the mouth with something horrible. And you read that certain kind of fiction where the guy will always get the girl and the good guys win and it reaffirms to you that life is fair. We all want that at times. There’s a certain vicarious release to that. So I’m not dismissive of people who want that. But that’s not the kind of fiction I write, in most cases. It’s certainly not what Ice and Fire is. It tries to be more realistic about what life is. It has joy, but it also had pain and fear. I think the best fiction captures life in all its light and darkness.

#OH MY FUCK #wait I wonder if Kratos made these faces when he was younger #you know before the one he loved died a horrible death #and he lost his son #who kinda hated him at first and he wouldn't even tell him his name or that parents or #but I wonder if Krater #Kratos #my nickname for him is Krater #but I wonder if he was a lot like Lloyd when he was young #I wonder if Lloyd will make these faces when he is old #Why do I do (via rorytheawesome)
OKAY WOW RUDE AND UNNECESSARY WHY NOT JUST KILL ME NOW IT WOULD BE FAR KINDER
No, seriously, though, this is a really interesting point! And I am afraid there is going to be a mini-essay here because I have a LOT of feeling about this game that never really went away. But it's also been a very long time since I played it, so you're going to have to bear with my slightly fudged facts.
I mean, throughout the game, Lloyd is compared to the heroes from the Kharlan era. Yuan says "I see the resemblance," for example--actually, to my memory, EVERYONE says "I see the resemblance." Yuan just says it more. But then there's ALSO the whole thing with Mithos--the old leader dude in Mizuho points out that Lloyd is an idealist, and that he's like Mithos the Hero once was in ancient times. Even more interestingly is how in appearance, Lloyd is often compared to Kratos, but in the way he approaches life and its problems is often compared to Mithos: as the hero archetype, trying to save his childhood friend (though for Mithos it was his sister, the parallel still stands). Not to mention saving a doomed world in a nearly impossible way So there's a lot of parallels between the Kharlan era/heroes and the present day.
However, while the writers showcase the parallels between Lloyd's dream team and Mithos' group of giant butts, they also make a point to showcase the differences. Remember Mithos' quote at the very end? According to WikiQuotes: "Farewell, my shadow, you who stand at the end of the path I chose not to follow." Lloyd takes the difficult path, and here's the most important thing, I think: Lloyd consistently makes the choice to face hardships rather than running from them.
Also, by the end of the game, Lloyd's got these amazing people on his side. These are people who would fight for him, beat the crap out of him if he's being an idiot and/or an asshole, and people who believe in him. I feel like it's entirely possible that Kratos started out similar to Lloyd, but I find it less likely that Lloyd is going to end up like Kratos, simply because of the sort of man he made himself into and the choices he made.
