The Angel on my Shoulder: Avery Belle is a well written depiction of isolation and how people who don't fit into their communities, especially minorities who are new in tight knit communities, find other people who don't fit in to form a community of their own. It makes sense why our queer, autistic self who moved a lot growing up would be drawn to such a character (plus there is definitely something up with our gender, which helps)

Fucked up and evil how, BY DESIGN, you have the ability to go through the entirety of Scarlet Hollow treating Avery the exact same way they are treated by the rest of the town. How they are an incredibly interesting character with a lot of depth but only if you take the time to know them. You don't have to witness their problems for the story to progress like Stella or Oscar or Reese or Kaneeka, hell, even when they are finally in a chapter conflict without you having to invite them you have the option to almost completely ignore them and their role in the situation. Actually fucked up and evil. Screaming crying and throwing up. There is such good Avery for people willing to look for it but you have to be willing to... you have to go out of your way to extend to them a kindness no one else has. Yeah I'm gonna need a minute

something funny that happens on this blog every so often is i'll repost an avery related thing from someone i havent seen before, they notice my blog, follow me, and go through literally everything ive ever reposted lmao
One thing about Avery is they can basically be a background character in the story. Every interaction with them either optional or they aren't just a supporting character in it
I really understood this when my grandma, who basically refused to do any optional talking with characters, played. Stella, Kaneeka, Dr. Kelly, Sybil, Reese, Tabitha, Duke, Bo, and even Oscar were basically forced onto her. But by the time she got to chapter 5 she had seen Avery once. One time. And it could barely even be considered an interaction.
It is complete night and day from my playthrough where I took basically every chance to bring Avery along. There were entire scenes in my grandma's playthrough that were missing a character from mine. And yeah, some of that is explainable by my need to ask every character questions, but most of it is that I did get interested by Avery quickly. Otherwise, I could have easily not noticed them
And this isn’t a criticism of Avery as a character. You know the phrase "show don't tell." I think in video game landscapes there is a third way video games can make a point. "Play, don't tell." Video games can easily put the player themselves into the thoughts and experiences of the characters, and I think Avery works as a great example of this. They are in a town where very few people care to get to know them, and the game makes you feel this by making them an optional encounter. They blend into the background, you don't need to talk to them, they are just that waiter. Only when you go out of your way do you realize they are a fully fleshed individual. And if you don't, the only point they matter is their lowest point.
The game doesn't just tell you Avery is an outcast most people don't take time to get to know. The game doesn't just show you Avery is an outcast most people don't take time to get to know. The game makes you play that reality.

Thinking about Avery ch5 and how one of your dialogue options is "I thought you were cool, how could you do this?" because FUCK. That option is just so reflective of their relationship with the town. The best anyone ever thinks of them is that they're "cool" if they think of them at all, and the moment they do something and make a choice motivated by a part of themselves unknown to the townspeople who won't bother getting to know them it's treated as a huge WTF moment...
