Happy Birthday Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch [19.July.1976] The further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is. Not to be in your comfort zone is great fun.
“When I was about 25 years old, I worked with two very good actors. The encounters were brief, but I’ve remembered them both with great admiration. Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton both embodied qualities which one is fogyishly tempted to look at with nostalgia. Along with very considerable talent, they had elegance, glamor, wit, kindness and decency.
I didn’t know at the time that they were married or that they had a son of about 10 who was quietly gestating all the same attributes. And now, 30 years later, the boy has been let loose. He has taken the form of Benedict Cumberbatch.
His parents’ qualities are on rampant display. It’s rare to the point of outlandish to find so many variables in one actor, including features which ought to be incompatible: vulnerability, a sense of danger, a clear intellect, honesty, courage — and a rather alarming energy. I take no pleasure in feeling humbled, but there’s no getting around it.
He must be stopped.” -Colin Firth
Happy Birthday, Benedict Cumberbatch ♡ ~ July 19, 2014
Thank you for all your brilliant work on screen and the lovely person you are off screen. Sincerely, The Cumbercollective
A very Happy Birthday today to Benedict Cumberbatch!

The London Sherlock Location Guidebook
It’s done! Get the PDF here.
File size: 355MB
The fruit of hundreds of hours of research, tramping London, photographing, screencapping and cursing PowerPoint, it is here!
The guide contains maps showing how to find every known BBC Sherlock location in London, with screencaps and text identifying where it featured, and contemporary photos to show what it looks like now. There are also some special sections such as how to follow the ASIP taxi chase in order, and area maps to help you devise local mini-tours if you like.
I (@pennypaperbrain) have lived in London for 20 years, and this guide grew out of showing fandom friends around, first the obvious places and then some not so obvious. Photography is by the indispensable @sincerely-chaos.
This is version 1 so I’m sure there are many improvements and refinements that can be made. Please email londonsherlocktour at gmail dot com if you have feedback, or squee. (You can also use tumblr of course, but tumblr eats asks). If you end up using the guide in London, it would also be particularly cool to have stories/photos to feature on this tumblr.
This is real London! City of tea, architecture and fine telly. Don’t stop coming to visit us.
Can’t wait to put this to use in July! Thanks so much!
Great! We’d love it if you sent in any photos or stories of your explorations.
Amazing. Look at all the hard work that went into this. A fandom gift.
∞ Scenes of Sherlock
Never knew when your birthday was.
BBC Sherlock releases new content for two weeks straight. Me:
The Six Thatchers does have a bad guy, but he’s very much in the background. Instead the episode focuses on the cracks starting to form between Sherlock John and Mary. The emotional events of the final act change the dynamic of the show irrevocably.
New info on ‘The Six Thatchers’ from the Radio Times - (via nixxie-fic)
Interesting details in the promo photo (X)
I don’t think we’ve seen this little boat before?
What is that little drawing of the police officer (or russian soldier?) behind the Redbeard figurine on the shelf?
The sheet music titled ‘Miss Me’ is floating right next to the reflection of John’s head in the water.
The book with the most visible title near Sherlock’s head is titled: “Inventions that Changed the World”.
The book with the most visible title near John’s head is titled: “Proclaimed in Blood”.
The one right next to Proclaimed in Blood is The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell:
Dat teacup
@havetardiswilltimetravel, re: your post here about the objects in the promo, the floating teacup is one from the famed ‘Home Sweet Home’ set by Ali Miller. It’s a black and white design of the tradewinds map of UK & Ireland, accented with red crowns and old-world sailing ships:
We first saw the set in The Reichenbach Fall:
Only one cup in the set has a crown. Moriarty got that one:
FWIW, the cup has been in the series since Series 2. In my opinion, any symbolism is probably related to callbacks, although the prop itself is very “in theme” with the show in general.
