I guess as I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried to make less enemies. Yeah. Practice goes a long way, but at the end of the day… Some people are just hopeless. It’s better that I let them down harshly before they hear it from a label executive. That’s even worse. I’ve sat through plenty of those… But perhaps it is worth a chance. Oh thanks. Yeah, my parents were super Mexican-Catholic, so they thought it would be a good idea to name me one of those types of names. It means follower of St. Anne. Ironically, they changed my middle name to Diabla which means Satan or devil and was called garbage face for majority of my childhood. Very Catholic, I know. 

You’re obviously much better than I am. Sometimes I think I prefer having enemies. At least they let you know where you stand. You said it, I didn’t have...But I would have if you hadn’t. People are easily deluded these days, it’s always better to help them realize it early on. In a way, you’re doing the Lord’s work. So you sing, then? It is. I’ll join you, only if you promise to shit talk with me. I could use a new judging buddy. You may think that, but you’re underestimating the power being a Dweller provides. Exactly! There are plenty of other things to do. Hell, Maury is still airing. Just go...Somewhere. Anywhere. I’m beginning to think you’re my long lost twin. Greatness recognizes greatness, so I’ll say same to you. 

That’s a lot to take in, and yet also oddly hilarious. At least you can say it’s unique. Kids are dumb, I couldn’t even stand being one. It’s obvious you’ve elevated above that. Where are you from?

Unfortunately so. I’ve maxed out my good deeds for the rest of the summer. They can ask me again in the fall. You seem to know your shit. Where can I find one of these few and far between? Of course I’ve got the formula to change it. Enough auto-tune can make someone sound like a top-charting artist. But I don’t like working with those people. I like working with people who can actually sing.

You’re doing better than I am. At least you tried for one. And, if they know what’s good for them, they’ll use all that time to practice. Maye they’ll get a second answer second time around. I like to think so, thanks for noticing. Great question. I would start with the coffee house. They have open mic nights every week. On occasion, it pays off and draws out one of the good ones. Be prepared to get some negative feedback from the pretentious coffee dwellers (regulars, as I call them). Anyway, they think spending 75% of their unemployed lives sitting in the shop makes them experts. Spoiler alert, they’re not. Just tune them out and you’ll survive the experience, almost guaranteed. Right, that’s true. At least you know what you’re looking for. I’ll be sure and toss them your way if they find me first. Cool. Santana? I like that. It’s different. Do you know what it means?

With the beach filling up with beachgoers alike, it seemed like Quinn would have calmed herself down if someone had remotely walking in front of her or stood in her way. It was a public place, after all, and it’s not like she owned any part of the beach or the sun for that matter. Still, she felt like she was owed some kind of courtesy if it was evident she was preoccupying space somewhere. “I don’t. Haven’t you ever heard that it’s impolite to stand in front of others?” She asked, mostly rhetorically. She didn’t need an answer. It was impolite, intentional or not.

“Better,” Quinn slid her shades back up on her face and leaned back now that the sun was back to shining on her. Are you new around here? “Sort… of,” Quinn answered, bobbing her head back and forth a bit. “I moved here about six months ago which I suppose is newer than being here for years,” she shrugged. “Quinn Fabray, by the way,” she pointed out, realizing she hadn’t even told Evie her own name.

The retort she gave caught Evie off guard even though she didn’t show it. Crossing her arms she cocked her hip and tilted her chin, looking down almost defiantly at the person strewn in front of her. “Maybe I have. But, I guess it would only be fair for me to ask if you’ve heard of the word “please”? I hear it works wonders when you’re hoping someone will do something you would like for them to do.” She said before shrugging, relaxing her arms in the process. 

“I’m so glad.” Even though her tone might have been misinterpreted as shady given what the interaction between the two had been up to this point. But, Evie respected Quinn at the very least. She couldn’t ever be too mad at someone who stood their ground and stood up for themselves no matter the situation. “Yeah, you’re right. Six months is still pretty new no matter how you look at it. What brought you to town?” Evie asked. “Quinn Fabray. Your name fits you. Have you found much to get into here yet?”

Quinn didn’t know why she hadn’t moved to a beach town earlier! In fact, she felt almost downright stupid for it. The summer sun, laying out on the beach, and people practically walking around naked? Sign her up. Despite living in Hathaway for only six months, she still didn’t know the place that well, but one place she had become rather acquainted with was the beach. 

She laid back on her beach towel and angled the sun hat on her head to get a better look at her surroundings, soaking in the rays from the North Carolina sun. Don’t get it twisted, though! Quinn Fabray was no longer an eighteen year old girl, she kept a rigorous skincare routine that included plenty of SPF. She wasn’t ready to look like a prune until at least her 50th birthday. Although that didn’t stop her from letting out a huff when someone walked in front of her, blocking her from the sun. “Excuse me?” She asked, pulling her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose. “You’re blocking my sun.”

Evie loved going to the beach after work, even though that meant going in the middle of the day, when the place was the most packed. She still tried to enjoy herself, focusing on the path she walked in front of her and feeling the warm sand moving between her toes while she went. Overall she paid no mind to the crowds of people laying, running, and walking around her. As long as she was able to avoid stepping on someone, or colliding with another person head on, she felt she had done enough. 

Hearing the voice drifting from somewhere around her, Evie turned in what was close to a 360 circle searching for who was addressing her. Spotting the blonde laying a couple of feet to her left, she sighed and rolled her eyes. “Sorry, I didn’t realize someone could own the sun.” Her tone wasn’t confrontational, but her energy said she wasn’t someone to take being messed with in any way lightly. She stepped two steps to her right. “There, is that better?” Shaking her head she crossed her arms, giving the other woman a once-over. “I’m Evie Jones. I don’t recognize you. Are you new around here?”

This kid approached me on the beach asking if I could help him record his first single. I don’t usually accept solicitations from randos, but I was feeling nice today. He played me his demo and it was absolute trash. Where are all of the talented people in this town? I’m guessing nonexistent. 

I guess that’s what being nice gets you, huh? To answer your question, it seems like you hit the nail on the head. Nearly, anyway. I won’t say there are no talented people in town, but they are few and far between, and nine times out of ten squandering their talents. It sounds like you think you’ve got the formula to change that. I’m Evelyn Jones, but call me that and we’ll have to fight. Evie is fine.
