For the first time in, well, her entire dang life, Vanessa felt like things were going her way. She finally had a sorcerer mentor. She was doing okay in school (well, she was doing pretty good in the classes she liked, which evened out how not good she was doing in the boring ones). She had an internship that she was doing well at and was even impressing Dr. Deavor.
That last one meant a lot — Dr. Deavor was this totally cool STEM-lady (and also gay? Vanessa thought she remembered reading about that somewhere in some online profile at one point) and she was successful and badass and she thought Vanessa was doing a good job.Â
“Thank you!” she said, trying to hide just how wide she was smiling. “I was thinking of using some loud reagents? I helped someone’s drone in a park once, which isn’t super related I guess, but it took off!”
And also exploded, but Vanessa wasn’t gonna mention that part.Â
Loud reagents? Honestly, Ev had no idea what that was. Sounded like a nuisance to her. But if she could get Vanessa to cause enough of a nuisance that it annoyed the people of Swynlake into restricting magic more, so be it. It was a petty and ridiculous way to do that, but at this point, Ev was not above petty and ridiculous.Â
“A drone? That’s impressive, I knew I chose right when I chose you,” Ev simpered, maybe laying it on a little thick. But this was what uni students needed. Validation. “It’s an alarm system, and you do want to get people’s attention, so don’t worry about being too loud. Wherever you decide to test it, the neighbors will understand. Someone’s always around testing their experiments. And besides, it’s Swynlake. It won’t be near to the strangest thing anyone will see in a day.”
That was very much a stretch of the truth, but if Ev was going to lean into this “nuisance” thing, she really had to go all in and put Vanessa in the worst situation possible.Â
“My one request is that you bring it to me before you test it out. Just so I can make sure it doesn’t explode or anything.” Or to make sure it does, Ev thought. “I trust you, but an extra set of eyes never hurts.”
