I debated about posting the full scene this was extracted from because Ila relating her personal woes along with that of her above stairs neighbour in a surprisingly gripping manner is engrossing to watch but that might have detracted from the beautiful videography of Ila preparing this stuffed karela and not having anyone else appreciate it would be tragic.

Ila loving prepares her husband's dabba (lunchbox) every day where it's then collected and delivered to him hot and fresh in time for lunch. However, through some kind of crosswire, the dabba is one day delivered to a strange man and a message in a dabba type of correspondence ensues between the two.

A lot of the time, a fictional food scene is not just about the food for me but also very much about how a character in a story interacts with the food they're preparing/eating and Aruna was both joy and cheeky delight.

As far as attention grabbing movie opening scenes go, Aruna tucking into that oxtail soup is a delight.

The pizza here offers an interesting juxtaposition to the conversation taking place while the characters dig into its cheesy goodness. The fully loaded pizza toppings appear to be obvious at first until you take a closer look and you realise there’s more hidden beneath the top layer that isn’t apparent to the viewer. Similarly, the obliviousness of the other characters to the undercurrents taking place between Na-bi/Jae-eon and Bit-na/Gyu-hyun, including the pairs of each other, makes for an incredibly delicious scene.

I liked this scene because Juana’s liking of Aki was as unexpected as her love of sushi and neither was eclipsed by the other during the entirety of the movie. Everything fell into place naturally and I love how organic both Juana’s passion for her craft and her attraction to Aki is.

I love the sweet domesticity of this scene and the simple but visually appealing shots of the food shown in focus. It’s both warm and inviting and definitely one of my fave fictional food scenes.
