Your designs are so full of life and eclectic whimsy that I feel my brain get lighter and more energized just looking at your art. Can I ask how your idea-to-concept process goes? Like how do you workshop an idea or a whim into a final design?
This maybe the nicest thing someone has ever said about my character designs QoQ weh!Â
As for your questionânormally Iâm not very good at giving little walk-throughs but I actually do have some semblance of a process??
BEWARE, ITâS A LONG POST.
STEP 1: Have an idea or two
Usually I think something like âI want a character withâŚâ and insert what I want. For example, âI want a character with dyed hairâ or âI want a character who is angry all the time.â or even âI want a character who is japan themed.â etc.
STEP 2: Combine and develop
I think about what ideas would go well together, for example, I donât need three separate OCs if I want to use all the ideas in step one, I can combine them into a single character! This is around the time I start looking at relevant inspirations. For example, if I want a character who is japan themed I start looking at what kind of clothing they might wear, on pinterest, on tumblr, on twitter, etc.
STEP 3: Hash it out!
Then, I start drawing! Usually I just go with my gut at this stage, putting out whatever I feel looks good and goes with my internal image. Sometimes I scrap a lot of details, sometimes I change things because I realize I copied something else without thinking about it, sometimes I get it right on the first go! Either way the character tends to develop even after this stage. From here itâs an on the fly kind of thing.Â
Thatâs my general processâIt might help to see it in action so here are some examples of how my OCs have developed over time:
concept: Male model, evil look, platinum blonde hair, ice blue colours
concept: small boi, amateur boxer, blue hair, pink accents
Concept: Tiefling who wants to be a noble, blue skin, ram horns
concept: survivalist orphan, chinese, cricket theme, red colour scheme
concept: Egyptian, bookish, punk-ish look
Some of this is just my style changing over timeâbut certain parts are me settling into what is more representative of the character. Often times their true personality comes out the more I develop them! The same process can be said for any idea development I go through, whether it be world building or design.
THIS POST GOT REALLY LONGâTL;DRÂ START WITH SMALL IDEAS, MOOSH EM TOGETHER, TA-DA!
