Excavacations ”Quotes & Hymns” (from “In Perris-Beauchamp”, on Weird Forest Records, 2013)
I wasn’t prepared to this. I first heard about Excavacations through a split with Black Eagle Child but wasn’t too impressed. So I gave a distracted ear to this album anyways and bang, I was directly hooked. They play experimental indie pop music, it sounds a little bit like what could be obtained if you were trying to mix early albums by Mercury Rev and Joan of Arc. Nicholas Longworth and Chad Parsons are Excavacations. It is such an exciting album.
EXCAVACATIONS IN PERRIS-BEAUCHAMP
Out of all the weirdos who were ever weird on Stunned Records, Excavacations managed to seem especially weird for their studied and accomplished blend of standard pop songs and gorgeous ambient drone. Straddling that line is a considerable marketing problem, but regardless of category, Excavacations’ synthesis continues to evolve with each release.
This one is a full-on concept album. We float down into fantasyland cushioned on an air pocket of reverb-drenched horns, synth drones and guitar crunches, and get our bearings to explore the land of Perris-Beauchamp. Other bands would get a whole side of a tape out of this soup, but here it’s just the airlock.
The pieces that follow are coherent, well-composed, lyrically interesting and immaculately mixed. The record flows like a river, bits and pieces rising up out of the mix, individual songs rising and falling congenially out of the arrangements. It’s hard to even call them “arrangements”; the sonic composition of each track is so warm and natural, it feels more like the whole album just grew right out of the ground. Buy this thing, hit “play” and don’t dare put it on shuffle.
A grower, an ear-chewer and a headphone Heaven. Available for stream or download at Boomkat.
In a Kant-referencing tweet, How to Dress Well’s Tom Krell said that “I believe that pop w/o the avant garde is blind & the avant g w/o pop is empty.” While this tweet addresses one of the big problems I have with artists in both genres who confine themselves to a limited palette of influences/styles, I think it particularly applies to the world of contemporary indie pop. This issue of limited influence is touched upon in Alex Griffin’s recent review of Jackson Scott’s record, which is one instance among many where a hyped-up pop artist has very little new to add to a well-worn genre. In the last few years, there have been far too many indie pop bands that express no interest in doing anything outside of their narrow niche. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that unbearably boring and, to reference Krell, blind.
However, despite the occasionally vacuous nature of certain pop/experimental artists, there have been an equal number of composers who wonderfully cross-pollinate these worlds and make strikingly new works as a result. This is where Excavacations come in. As TMT has previously discussed, this band manages to exist as both a pop and drone act, and on In Perris-Beauchamp, the group continues to blur the lines between song and sound art. Much like Julia Holter’s excellentTragedy, Excavacations present a world where songs can’t exist without noise and noise can’t exist without songs. However, unlike the musique concrète pastiche of Holter, Excavations excel at creating melodic orchestral pop that alternately dissolves into and emerges out of expertly crafted synth drones. The whole thing reminds of what might have happened if See You On The Other Side-era Mercury Rev had decided to explore the influence of their mentor Tony Conrad a bit more. In Perris-Beauchamp is a beautiful merging of influence made even prettier and more pristine by the mastering job done by synth god M. Geddes Gengras.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
EXCAVACATIONS RELEASES DIGITAL LP OF ALL NEW MATERIAL ON WEIRD FOREST RECORDS
Excavacations in Perris-Beauchamp
Following last year’s compilation of songs gathered from their tapes on Stunned Records, Avant Archive, and Paramita Recordings, Excavacations debut their album of all new material for Weird Forest Records: In Perris-Beauchamp.
Mastered by M. Geddes Gengras, this is the duo’s most accessible presentation of their trademark amalgamation of ambient, rock, drone, pop, and electronic music. Employing a frontier-centric approach similar to current and former labelmates Grouper, Emeralds, Sean McCann, and Sun Araw, Excavacations are set apart by their ability to transport noise-laden soundscapes into the pop realms inhabited by Sufjan Stevens, Van Dyke Parks, Dirty Projectors, or The Flaming Lips. As was the case with Weird Forest’s release of Lil B’s trailblazing record Rain in England, it is evident here that rather than imitate or corral their sound to fit within an existing genre or throwback style, Excavacations write music that can only be described as their own.

Praise for Excavacations:
"Weird Forest’s as-yet-categorised rockers Excavacations warrant your attention." --- Boomkat
"I’m surprised more bands aren’t jumping all over what Excavacations attempt on their Weird Forest debut...the seamless blend of modern drone/ambient music and indie pop...Excavacations succeed because they take the conceit seriously." --- Experimedia
"The suggestions that Excavacations are simultaneously a "pop" and
"drone" act somehow fits exceptionally." --- Tiny Mix Tapes
"Every time I find myself sure of a touchstone it crumbles into my ears and
I'm left running around…trying my best to describe the teensy tracks before they slide into another ocean." --- Gumshoe Grove
