From the corner of her eye, it seemed that she finally elicited a reaction from him other than his irritating smirk. Saya ignored his threats. He was in noposition to teach anyone manners when he could use some himself. They were in a public park and surrounded by people. She highly doubted that Charles had the gall to actually attack her and create a scene. Being exposed in the open gave her some safety but it also meant that she couldnโt lay a hand on him. Hagi was in the park as well but a distance away.ย
She realized that Charles had no idea that she had another chevalier since the incident at the Zoo. She would endure Charlesโ taunts until he had enough and left. She couldnโt let him find about Riku.
โYouโre right, Hagi did not ask to be my chevalier and I take full responsibility for it. I was only trying to save his life. But even so, Hagi has never blamed me and he accepts what he is. And I know that Hagi has never forgotten that he was once human.โ
When Charles told her about his unhappy beginnings, Saya couldnโt help but feel an inkling of pity for him and think of Hagi as well. Hagi was a street performer and his family lived in poverty since they were Romani. He was probably around Charlesโ age when they first met and just as insufferable. It was hard for her to imagine Diva embracing him like she did for Hagi but the girl in the tower was just as sad and pitiable.
She looked at the fountain while speaking with a tone like she was trying to approach a wounded animal โSo, you abandoned your humanity because humanity abandoned you? You donโt even have one happy memory of when you were human? Didnโt you have any friends or family? People who cared about you?โ ย
Getting ready to yell at her for what sounded like apologizing, โtaking responsibilityโ, for something that isn't even a sin from his perspective. All stop at her questioning. Her change of tone sounded like attempts of showing him pity. Trying to sympathize. Trying to see him as anything but the enemy. It was all insulting and he had allowed this. Heel squeaks back as a feeling of exposure sets in. Yet, there was no lashing out at the girl, since his surroundings finally came into focus. If you do anything Amshel will give you hell for it. Idiot. You showed weakness in front of her. You are the only one to blame for this. Tender skin from scars that had already healed but still didn't like to be touched. All exposed because he didn't choose his words more carefully.
He can't attack her and he doesn't want to risk anything else slipping out. Charles wasn't even supposed to be here, arguing, so all there was left to do was go back to about his business. Finally composing himself with the plan in mind. Brushing off his coat with the hand Saya had spared him long ago. Glaring at her, knowing there was no beating her this time. Child throwing a tantrum knowing he lost.ย or just didn't want to gamble anymore on the possibility.
โ ย ๐ฃhat's none of your business. Besides even if I told you, would you stop seeing Diva or myself as monsters? ย โ void of tone, the passion and anger that once festered in his lungs had vanished.
Charles had turned his back to Saya, yet before walking off, โย ๐umans...crumble too easily. Diva was the only person who cared about me that I didn't have to worry about fading away from my life. ย โ
