i’m replacing the post i reblogged about the mastodon scare with my own explanation based on my knowledge. this is mostly because i don’t like having a post on my blog that starts with swearing in all caps, unless it’s really, really important.

so basically:

the claim that mastodon is home to a lot of paedophiles is based on a misunderstanding of how it works.

mastodon is a software, and anyone can make their own mastodon community: the developers of the software don’t have any kind of control over who uses it.

the image given depicts one mastodon instance which is welcoming to paedophiles and child pornography. it does exist.

however, it is possible for mastodon instances to block other mastodon instances from interacting with them. the mastodon developers’ own instance has blocked the offending server.

anecdotally, most mastodon instances have rules against paedophilic content and have also blocked the server in question.
