EXO - The Beauty of Having Chinese Members
For the past few weeks, I have been writing posts about the Chinese members, from how i feel about Lay as well as Kris, Luhan and Tao’s departure. Today, i am going to talk about how the presence Chinese members made EXO stand out as a group and made it a group that was different and had a refreshing image.
So, many K-pop groups are made up of mostly Korean members, and although there are some groups with foreign members, very few actually have 1/3 of the group made up of foreign members and much less foreign members from the same country. Out of the more popular K-pop groups out there, Got7 has one of the smallest foreign to Korean members ratio (3:4), but not all of the foreign members come from the same country.
With 1/3 of the EXO members being Chinese, there were many interactions that could be shown and these interactions are things which all-Korean groups do not have to offer. And being someone who understands Chinese, I really enjoyed the times when the Chinese members spoke Chinese, it somehow made me feel closer to them. Not to mention the many times when the Chinese members were confused as to what was going on as they are not that fluent in Korean. Honestly, it was so cute to see them being confused and the Korean members trying their best to explain to them.
Remember when Lay couldn’t understand the term “campfire”:
(cr. to owner)
And then there was the time when Luhan decided to flaunt his Korean skills (from 30:27-31:29):
Some people may say EXO Showtime is scripted, and all, but well, if you tell an all-Korean group to try and pull these off, it will be a complete joke. Hence, it may be natural, it may be scripted, but it is still something only groups like EXO will be able to pull off.
This gives EXO a refreshing image that we do not see in other groups, and for me, these interactions are what appeal to me the most and made me stay with EXO.
On top of that, the reason why EXO-M appealed to me a lot was because the Korean members (Chen and Xiumin) got to experience what it feels like to work in a foreign country and since all the members of EXO-M share such an experience, they were very supportive of one another, which is what made their story so touching.
This was when Kris explained why they chose to cover Wakin Chou’s 《一起吃苦的幸福》on the Chinese Version of Immortal Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0b5QziLDsI
(Rough translation):
Before song (he was talking to the original singer of the song):
Today, we hope to express and sing this song in a different way, in a way that belongs to just our group. We (the members) come from different countries, and speak different languages, but we came together and worked hard together, thus, I feel that this song is very suitable for us.
After song:
Wakin Chou: Originally, I was shocked to see such a young group choose to cover such this song (it was first released in 2003).
Kris: Our Chinese members stayed in Korea for about 3-5 years, and initially, we couldn’t speak Korean well, so we helped each other in various areas. in addition, it is also not easy for our Korean members to promote in China. After all, they are not very fluent in Chinese. For us, we have a common dream to stand on stage to perform and bring happiness & positive energy to everyone. I feel that this is truly a blessing and this song is the best song to express all these.
It is a pity that there’s only one Chinese member left in EXO, and without the rest of the Chinese members, we won’t get to see the Luhan-Lay interaction that we see above ever again. On top of that, with more time spent in Korea, Lay’s Korean has improved and we see less of his confused moments, which made the funny interactions like the one with Baekhyun even rarer. We won’t be able to turn back time and go back to the OT12 era, but let’s just treasure what we have now because as we can tell by now, nothing lasts forever.
P.S. The rough translation of Kris’s explanation is done by me. Please credit me if you are going to use it.
Analysis of Tao’s personality
When I was writing about Tao’s departure from EXO, I started analysing his personality and his experiences outside of EXO. I even wanted to analyse the reason behind his whiny personality but I would have went seriously off topic if I had included all that in last week’s post. But I couldn’t just keep all these feels to myself, thus the reason for this post. I will talk about Chenchen (the friend Tao learned sign language for) and my take on his whiny personality, which many have came to dislike(?).
I would like to begin with Kris and Tao’s friendship (or rather, ex-friendship). Kris was the member who babied Tao the most and tolerated him despite his tendency to get too whiny and annoying. Based on personal experiences and a little studying of Psychology, the tendency of him to be whiny and attention-seeking is basically an evidence of insecurity and the need for love. When Kris left, Tao might have felt lost. It’s just like how we lose our best friends after a fight, the feeling is terrible. He suddenly lost the person whom he confided in all the time, when he had problems, he suddenly had no one to turn to anymore. Trust me when I say I understand this more than anyone.
With Kris’s absence in his life, Tao tried really hard to find a soulmate in the other EXO members, just like what he did in Kris. Kris was so precious to him. Kris was someone who understood and embraced him for who he is. This explains why he tried to be touchy-feely with the members, just like how he was with Kris, in order to find that one person or two who could replace Kris. However, his personality/ love for skinship is not one that everyone can understand, which was why he eventually didn’t really find someone he could connect with, someone like Kris. (At least he appears to not have done so.) And for this, I do feel really sad for him. Despite all that, I believe EXO members were still people whom he treasured and was glad to have met.
Many people felt that his whiny personality was immature, but to be honest, an immature person would not think of learning sign language to communicate with his friend. He learned sign language and did many things to support his friend, Chenchen, who is deaf. It may be because of that, he wanted to see what it felt like to have someone support him and did things for him, for a change. Thus, that may explain his whiny personality and the fact that he consistently acted more like a maknae than the actual maknae (Sehun) by wanting Kris to buy things for him on Showtime, shower with him (starts at 35:28), etc.
Also, since he couldn’t always express his love for Chenchen in words, gestures and skinship probably felt more important to him. That explains why he was more touchy-feely towards EXO members. He probably didn’t understand that different people have different ways of and preferences for communication, and skinship may not be something that everyone likes.
In addition, it could be a difference in culture as well. When I went on a school trip to China, I was assigned to a buddy in a school there. When we walked side-by-side, my buddy had the habit of linking arms with me while we walk (though we met just 5 minutes before). And that definitely felt weird to me, even though I came from an Asian country as well. And a glance around the corridor made me realise that linking arms was a culture in China, probably an expression of friendliness. There were also some China scholars in my school and yes, some of them were definitely more pro-skinship than the locals. It’s probably just a culture thing. Tao was more open to skinship because of where he grew up in, and for people from other countries, while they are open to it as well, they are not comfortable with skinship with someone they are not close to. There are exceptions, of course. Like Lay is definitely not as touchy as Tao and some members such as Baekhyun are perfectly fine with skinship, while D.O. is not comfortable with just anyone touching him, even after spending a good 4 years with some of them.
Remember when he rejected Tao back in 2013:
Tao is a beautiful person but he is just not that good at reading people, which is why he may rub people the wrong way and annoy them. Nonetheless, he is someone who treasures his friends, and while he may not be perfect (no one is, for that matter), there are so many positive aspects of him that outweigh the negative side of him. As fans, let’s just love him for who he is. We can fault him at times, but why should that stop us from loving him on other occasions?
BONUS: TAO WITH CHENCHEN!
Analysis of the Ex-Members’ Departure (Part 3 - Tao)
For the past two weeks, I talked about Kris and Luhan’s departure from EXO and how it impacted fans and members alike. Lastly, we have our EXO-M maknae, Tao.
TAO (Left in ~April 2015)
Tao’s departure was as controversial as Kris’s, if not more so. With his strong reaction towards Kris’s departure and how he seemed to interact with EXO members more than the other two who left, we would think that he would be the last person to leave. But we were wrong. He lasted around a year more than the other two, his dad brought him back to China due to his injuries, and he never returned.
Before I continue, though, I would recommend that you watch the video on Tao’s interview addressing his issues with SM, Kris, and some of his other controversies. From this interview, we can really see how he has grown out of his whiny maknae self in 2013. You can take this as a pinch of salt, but I do trust him to a large extent, because much of what he said was pretty justified.
There is so much about Tao that I want to talk about and i have no idea where to start. Let’s start with his Weibo and Instagram post about Kris. So back when Kris left, he put up that post online, telling us how betrayed he felt. Some people felt it was immature of him as a celebrity to post something like this, but there were many others who empathised with him and supported him. It was not until 2015, when he decided to pursue a solo career in China and left EXO, that the post resurfaced. People were saying how he was contradicting himself, talking about betrayal, and subsequently doing the same thing. Well, the only thing that was wrong about the post was that he posted it despite being an idol, a public figure. I mean, we constantly see 21 year olds ranting about inconsiderate people, about the weather, everything. Tao was just another 21 year old who wanted to express his anger at a friend’s betrayal. In fact, it was a much more mature post compared to many other irrelevant and unnecessary rantings on the Internet. As evident from the interview he did (the one I linked above), although those were his true thoughts, he did ponder over whether to post it or not, and the manager encouraged him to do so. And about him contradicting himself. People’s thoughts change, people grow up over time. He learned a lot in that one year, he understood Kris more, so I don’t see why people had to lash out at Tao when he left. People’s opinions change, it’s just a part of growing up as a person.
However, the post did cost him his friendship with Kris. I mean, this was Kris’s reaction when the interviewer asked him if he contacted Tao after the incident:
(cr. to owner)
I don’t know, you decide.
From what I see, Tao was really affected by Kris’s departure, mainly because he Kris was the member he was closest to, and he thought that feeling was mutual. But he ended up having to find out about such a shocking news through the media. It probably felt as if all his love/friendship for Kris was totally one-sided. I, for one, would be mad if I were Tao.
If anything, leaving EXO could have been especially difficult for Tao, considering how happy he was when he was with the members. I mean, there is only so much you can do to pretend that you like a person, and Tao was constantly joking around and laughing with the members, he was evidently close to at least some of them. Yes, there were times when members appear to be annoyed with him, because of his whiny personality, which can rub people the wrong way. This was especially evident when it came to Kyungsoo, who doesn’t bother hiding his anger and irritation. Nonetheless, Kyungsoo did have interactions with Tao which didn’t end up with the former getting annoyed. It’s just like how in a class, you have that annoying classmate whom you sometimes just want to slap, but is a nice person to talk to or interact with most of time.
Although I do empathise with Tao, I don’t think he is entirely not to blame. Yes, it’s true that he suffered injuries and his dad brought him back to China, but that doesn’t give him the right to just decide to have a solo debut in China all of a sudden, just a few months after he went back. Not to mention he decided to use the SAME lawyer to file the SAME lawsuit against SM as Luhan and Kris, it did seem like a convenient way to start a solo debut and cut off ties with EXO. However, we do know that his dad’s opinions did matter to him, for all we know, his dad might be the one who wanted him to do that. But his departure from EXO was just plain messy and confusing.
For him, I do feel that though mistreatment was one of his reasons for leaving, deep down in his heart, the deciding factor that made him want to leave was his family. As we can see from the interview above, when he talked about his mum in the later part of the video, he was smiling, and he did seem happy. He could have decided to file the lawsuit just to stay by his family, or like I said earlier, leaving EXO might have been his father’s idea. The mistreatment was just one of the reasons, and a reason that would be much more credible and acceptable when brought up in court. This might even apply to Kris and Luhan as well.
For Tao, he did say in the interview that there were times when his dad told him to quit EXO, but he stayed. Therefore, it appears that the reason he endured the mistreatment was because of EXO members and his passion for music. However, after he went back to China, he spent time with his family, and he realised that he couldn’t bear to leave them again, which was why he filed the lawsuit and left EXO. Because honestly, if he wanted to leave SOLELY because of the mistreatment, he would have left long ago.
Well, he did seem satisfied with being with his family and I’m glad that he continued smiling despite all the ordeals he went through. I do wish him the best in everything, but I still stand by my opinion that Tao’s departure from EXO isn’t exactly the most transparent thing ever.
Analysis of the Ex-Members’ Departure (Part 2 - Luhan)
Last week, I shared my take on Kris’s departure from EXO, and I’ve decided to write a post about Luhan’s departure as well.
Luhan (Left in October 2014)
Luhan’s departure was definitely not as blown up as Kris and Tao’s, probably because he handled the entire situation fairly well. He learnt from Kris’s experience, and made sure to notify the members of his impending departure. As such, members were more understanding towards him, although there might have been some disappointment, they probably did not feel a strong sense of betrayal as they did when Kris left. (Actually, we never know if they were forced to say that they felt betrayed by Kris. For all we know, they might actually be fully supportive of Kris but SM would never agree to them openly showing support.)
Anyway, fans were definitely less shock when Luhan left, compared to when Kris did. It may be because he was the second to leave, and fans were sort of “used to it” or it may be that Luhan’s lawsuit against SM made fans realise that the problem lies in SM and not just their oppas. It could also be that the members did not really openly criticise Luhan for leaving, as they did for Kris, so fans who support the other members did not really blame him since the members didn’t either. Luhan’s departure was not as blown up, fans were just disappointed that after OT12 failed, OT11 couldn’t last either. TBH, Luhan was never really blamed for leaving and his departure was met with a fairly calm response. Other than fans expressing sadness and longing, much of the blame actually went to SM instead.
In Luhan’s case, it was more of his personal reaction to all these that caught my attention.
I watched EXO’s last Happy Camp appearance with Luhan, and Luhan really looked out of it most of the time. At this point, it was pretty evident that Luhan was actually considering to leave. When they were happily playing games, Luhan was just standing at the side, totally expressionless. It was almost as if he was contemplating if he should leave or not, and was trying to savour his last happy moments with EXO.
What was more intriguing was at the end, when they had an interview talking about starting a journey as an 11-member group (starts at 1:18:25 of the same Happy Camp video). Luhan only said that they were indeed affected my Kris’s departure, other than that, he couldn’t say anything else. To me, Luhan appears to be the one who understood Kris the most when Kris decided to leave. He definitely knew the reason, and I believe that he is fairly, if not totally, supportive of Kris when he left. He couldn’t say anything about Kris’s departure because he himself was thinking of doing the same thing. And he wanted to talk about his support for Kris, but he knew that SM would never like the idea of him saying that on broadcast. After which, he said “As long as everyone endures this, there’s nothing we cannot do”. Is he implying that he hopes everyone would continue to strive even after he leaves? Is he trying to say that he believes that the others would be able to move on even after he leaves them?
When Lay and Tao cried after watching the video of their interview, Luhan comforted Lay and what was that expression...Was it guilt or doubt or was it hesitation?
Whatever it was, at that moment, Luhan might have questioned his own decisions, seeing how many of the members were deeply affected by Kris’s departure.
But in Luhan’s case, he just wanted to leave because of the mistreatment and unfairness, he clearly still wanted to remain friends with other EXO members. After he filed the lawsuit, Chanyeol unfollowed him on Instagram (this was never really confirmed though, we don’t know if Chanyeol even followed Luhan in the first place). Nonetheless, Luhan never unfollowed any of the existing EXO members, even till today. Let’s just say, Luhan wanted to leave EXO, not the EXO members. However, while we know that Luhan remained in contact with the Chinese members, we have never heard of him keeping in touch with the Korean members. Hopefully we will learn about it someday.
Similarly, I’m glad that Luhan is successful in pursuing his solo career and I wish him all the best. And after all, Luhan and EXO seemed to have parted on good terms, there might be a chance that EXO and Luhan will be able to appear in the same show or same stage in the future. Not in the near future, but someday, hopefully.

Question
Hi guys, I am just wondering if y’all would be interested to know about my analysis of Luhan’s and Tao’s departure? I posted the analysis on Kris, so I wonder if y’all would like one on Tao and Luhan as well. I actually have a plan on what to write, but I’m not sure if I should go ahead with it. So, just wondering, would y’all like to have me post about Luhan and Tao as well?
In addition, you are free to share what you feel about the posts i write and the issues as well. You can just drop me an ask and I’ll reply asap. Promise! :)

Analysis of the Ex-Members’ Departure (Part 1 - Kris)
Yesterday, I saw an article about Luhan and Kris’s legal battle with SM, and because of that, I just want to share my take on the situation then and now. Therefore, my next few posts are going to be mainly about our Chinese members who have left. Because I just got into EXO recently, i didn’t really get the chance to talk about it when the drama went on back then. And after almost 2 years, there have been several articles on the Chinese members contacting each other and their opinions on each others’ departures and all, so I think this might be one of the best times to write about the issue.
I would just like to analyse and talk about the reactions of EXO members and the ex-members themselves when they left.
Before I start, I would just like to link all of you to this video (start 8:27), whereby Tao talked about the mistreatment that he and EXO members experienced from SM. I do believe what he said here, because he wasn’t the only one who talked about the mistreatment (Luhan mentioned it too: here).
KRIS (Left in May 2014)
Kris got a lot of backlash when he first left EXO, and I would attribute this to the fact that he was the FIRST to leave. The EXO members and fans had no prior experience of a member leaving their group, hence, everything was confusing and many just felt lost and betrayed. It also didn’t help that Kris did not tell ANYONE about his impending departure then. Honestly, I feel that even if he wasn’t close to the members, the very least he could do, out of respect for his fellow colleagues, would be to notify them about his departure instead of letting them find out together with the public.
I personally feel that Kris treated EXO members more like casual friends/colleagues, rather than brothers who were going to accompany him through hardships. Since he did not have very strong bonds with the members, and he was tired of enduring the unfair treatment, Kris seemed to just leave EXO without reservations. Compared to the other two members, he did seem much stronger, and he never let on the fact that he was going to leave. However, I do think he might not be as strong as what others think. I mean, we don’t know what went on in his head before he left. Perhaps he cried rivers of tears before making the decision, perhaps he did try his best to think of other ways to solve these issues. Since we would never know what went on before he made the decision to leave, I feel that as much as his departure did come off as a form of betrayal, we should never judge him for leaving because we will never understand the circumstances he had been placed in.
There was something I felt was quite interesting about his departure, and I’m surprised no one/few people have brought it up. Just two months before he left, EXO-M did a cover of Wakin Chou’s 《一起吃苦的幸福》, which literally translates to “The Happiness of Enduring Hardships Together”. They chose the song together, so I would say Kris must have played a part in selecting this song. In addition, he said that considering how they have both Korean and Chinese members, this song accurately reflects their story as EXO-M and it was the best song to describe their experiences as a group.
Some people found it really ironic that they sang this song just 2 months before Kris left. But if we look at it from another perspective, the lyrics were really meaningful, and it was almost as if Kris was hinting to us that he was going to leave. Some of the lines include:
1. 我们越来越爱回忆了, 是不是因为不敢期待未来呢?(Trans: We are loving memories more and more, is that because we do not have the courage to anticipate the future?)
Analysis: It was almost as if Kris was telling us/ the members that he was going to leave, and that they should embrace the memories because he might not be present in their future.
2. 就算有些事,烦恼无助,至少我们有一起吃苦的幸福 (Trans: Even though there are things which make us feel conflicted and helpless, at least we once had the happiness of enduring hardships together)
Analysis: Kris seemed to be telling us that there were times of helplessness and sometimes there were many conflicting thoughts (i.e. leaving or not leaving SM/EXO, enduring the unfair treatment or to leave and abandon the members, etc), but he was glad that they had the chance to endure the hardships together, and that he enjoyed his time with them, although there were tough times.
3. 每一次当爱,走到绝路,往事一幕幕会将我们搂住 (Trans: When love comes to an end, our past memories will embrace us/hold onto us)
Analysis: This line came off more strongly than others. This line seems to tell us that the journey of Kris in EXO was coming to an end but they have the past memories which they can hold onto.
4. 一个人吹风,只有酸楚,两个人吹风不再孤单无助 (Trans: When one endures the wind alone, there is only sorrow and grief, when two people endure the wind together, there would be no more loneliness and helplessness)
Analysis: This may sound a bit far-fetch, but it felt as if Kris was thankful for the others who endured the hardships (i.e. the “wind” in the lyrics) with him, such that he was less lonely and helpless. Or it could also represent his last ditch of effort to ask for support, telling others that he was enduring the hardships alone, was overwhelmed with sadness and exhaustion, and was hoping that someone would reach out to him and have them accompany him through this.
In conclusion, Kris’s departure actually impacted everyone the most because he was the first to leave and because it was so sudden. There were things he could have handled in a much better way, but I believe that the decision to leave was made after days and nights of pondering and was the best for him at that point in time. I don’t know if he ever regretted the decision to leave, probably not, and I sincerely hope not. I just hope that he will do well in his solo career and I will still support him because while he might be at fault, it was not entirely his fault.
(P.S. All translations are done on my own, please credit me if you are going to use it)

About LAY
We all know how Kris, Tao and Luhan left Exo. Sometimes I wonder if it is very difficult for Lay to actually stay in Exo. I mean, with all the lawsuits and stuff, we see that SM isn’t exactly the best when it comes to treating some of their idols. I wouldn’t say that our oppas are definitely right, but since they are not the only Chinese members to leave a SM kpop group, I would say SM is at fault to a certain extent. Assuming that what they said during in court is true (all the unfair treatment of Exo-M or Exo Chinese members), then won’t Lay be the member who suffered the most back when the Chinese members left? If the other 3 Chinese members couldn’t endure the discrimination and unfair treatment, then how about Yixing? He definitely experienced it too. But he stayed.
Also, I believe that in a foreign land, the Chinese members were each other’s mental support, even though some Chinese members were close to some of the Korean members. But after all, they all speak Chinese, it was definitely much easier to communicate with fellow Chinese members, and they probably understand each other’s worries and problems more since they are all working and living in a foreign land, and missing their family members. So when all 3 other Chinese members left, Lay probably lost some of his mental support, and I honestly feel bad for him. But maybe because they have already lost 3 members, and didn’t want to lose Lay (not as a fellow colleague, but more as a friend), I feel that the Korean Exo members actually paid more attention to Lay and really treasured him more. I guess it is safe to say he got closer to the members after the others left. Remember Baekhyun’s support for Lay when some “fans” criticised Lay for prioritising his China activities?
Lay has really came a long way since debut. His Korean wasn’t good, i would even say it was probably one of the worse among the Chinese members, and he clearly couldn’t understand what they say on broadcast on several occasions. I would definitely feel uncomfortable if I was placed in his situation, I believe he might have felt that way too. But he endured all these, and he stayed. He stayed despite being placed in a foreign land, in an unfamiliar world, in uncomfortable situations.
There was this interview that he did and he said he wouldn’t leave because he didn’t want SM to lose trust in Chinese members. (This was before Tao left.) Some people were offended by the interview, but I for one, admired him for what he said. And I certainly hope he keeps his promise, which I think he will. But can we take a moment to appreciate how much of an angel he is? Like people are doubting his loyalty for something that wasn’t even distantly related to him. I do see where the Korean members are coming from, though. I have to admit, I would ask the same thing if I were the Korean members, but yes, Lay doesn’t deserve to be doubted, that’s for sure.
After Kris and Luhan left (but before Tao left), Lay asked SM if he could open a studio in China. Some people felt that he was placed in the best situation after Kris and Luhan’s departure, because he could take advantage of the fact that he was one of the two Chinese members left at that time and he was clearly the more outstanding one, TBH. Some also brought up the point that if he left, SM can forget about targeting the Chinese market.
Well, we never know what went on behind the scenes of getting his studio and if he really is the angel that we all think he is. But there is only so much one can do to hide his true personality, and after all these years, Lay has definitely proven himself as someone who can be trusted and admired. And hence, I truly admire Yixing for all that he has endured and his dedication to Exo, especially how he constantly rushed back and forth between Korea and China to fulfil his schedules.
Just like Baekhyun, I will always support him for pursuing his dream and doing what he wants to do.
That being said, I am not blaming the other 3 members who left EXO, because we never know how they were treated. Maybe it was really too much for them to take. Maybe they had other dreams they want to pursue. And maybe they just didn’t have such strong attachment to the group. Of course, I am disappointed that they didn’t stay in EXO because OT12 era was still the best but I’m glad that they are doing what they want to do. And I hope EXO and all ex-EXO members will succeed in their endeavours.
P.S. I saw an article on Luhan and Kris’s legal battle with SM. I thought it ended last year or something, but apparently it’s still going on. I sincerely hope they reach an agreement soon LOL
