Could I tell you a story(that I find very funny) about growing up poor and dark skinned in a predominantly white area?
yes please share:)
When I was in 4th grade I had to transfer schools mid year from a scool that was 99% people of color to a predominantly white school, and when I showed up on the first day the school was celebrating what they called California history day(I had no ideas what was going on). It was basically a day half way through the year to give kids a break and still teach them stuff about California. So the whole school day consists of assemblies and fun activities about California’s olden days. The weirdest part though was when I first walked in to school all the students were wearing costumes! Like there were kids dressed as native Americans and miners but the weirdest one I saw was a couple of kids dressed up as a canoe, it just looked like they were sitting in a canoe while they were walking around school lol at the end of the day there was a costume contest and those kids ended up winning! So I went through this whole weird first day of school not questioning anything because I figured white kids just lived this fun life where even school was fun! Lol so when I got home I didn’t say anything to my parents I just figured every day of the rest of my life was gonna be this fun dress up game... obviously in all the fun of that day no one noticed that there was a new kid in school... but the second day when I showed up dressed up as a missionary people noticed that there was a new kid
“My husband had a sudden heart attack a few months ago. It was just a few blocks from here. They called me in to identify his body and then just let me walk right out onto 7th Avenue. I felt so lost. My friends were wonderful and supportive but eventually everyone moves on with their lives. I don’t have children. And I’m not a workaholic. So I was left with this intense loneliness and void. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep. Then one day I started researching dogs that are good for grief and depression. And ‘poodle’ kept popping up. But when I went to the rescue fair, all the poodles were gone. There was this one old dog in the back that nobody was looking at. She was skin and bones. She was trembling and scared and mucus was running out of her eyes. She seemed so fragile. She reminded me of myself. I named her Grace because I think my husband sent her to me. She’s my first dog. She’s been pure joy. We spend all our time together. She’s gained her weight back. She comes with me to therapy. We’re getting better together.”
