Ghettos are spaces that have no direct or clearly defined function – which generates a sense of unease for those who are separate from it. Everything in modern cities is designed to perform a precise function while slums rebel against this norm making them an ‘otherness’ to be frightened of and frowned upon

Smoothing the striated: the fabric is composed of thousands of tiny strands woven together (each part of the city, each block, each street, and each house) it is the striated structure. By pulling apart its form randomly in erratic movements – twisting and distorting the shape so it folds back on itself we are in turn – smoothing the striations.
Red is a significant colour in this work: Tschumis ‘red is not a colour’ sparked a topic of discussion- what does he mean? Red is used emphasize the concept in a heightened manner. It locates and dislocates, structuring the programmatic sequencing of the space. It is commanding and dominates the space. It colour of blood, of violence, of drama and of obscenity. It evokes different emotions and memories for each person but it always manages to hold an intensity and domineering quality.
A stance has to be taken against facile anti-humanist position taken by some current architectural theory. We can see evidence of this position in Tschumi and Eisenman’s violent architecture and the celebrity starchitects with huge budgets and glitz to impress the capitalist power driven cities. The dispossessed have no interest in the glamour and title that comes with having a building designed by a famous architect. They have no need of it
The architectural cities of tomorrow are heterotopias. A space of otherness. They are more than meets the eye. Architecture should be moving toward an organic and sustainable future without neo-liberalism creating dispossession.
Deconstructivism is a development of post modern architecture that focuses largely on fragmentation, manipulating the façade of the exterior in a way that is disjointed. Architects Peter Eisenman, Bernard Tschumi, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry all explore this form of architecture, influenced largely by the writings of Derrida. They are often called ‘Starchitects’ due to their celebrity status in their field known as highly sought after architects whose work pulls a crowd due to the flashy ‘wow factor’ that their work shows off.
Any relationship between a building and its users is one of violence, for any use means the intrusion of a human body into a given space, the intrusion of one order into another. By "violence," I do not mean the brutality that destroys physical or emotional integrity but a metaphor for the intensity of a relationship between individuals and their surrounding spaces.

Bernard Tschumi: “When I did the Parc de la Villette with the red follies, everybody kept asking “Why red?” I never answered this question, saying instead “You can say anything you want.” Eventually, I said, “Red is not a color”, which just added more mystery to the project.
As I developed my work over the years, I became more and more conscious that red was to emphasize the concept, namely, the overriding idea of the project. The fact that it was red was almost like a diagram, like a way of saying “Look, this is what structures the whole project”. The application of the color red was irrelevant; it was just to show how these series of buildings belonged to one another. It was a diagrammatic operation.”
