When I was in college, this book by Brazilian educator Paulo Freire was a game-changer for me. Freire helped me to see that the fight against wealth inequality, racism, and various other forms of oppression was not simply a matter of creating new policy or changing existing laws. Freire underscored for me an even more basic precondition: our our capacity to think critically. A critical consciousness can inspire action, and collective action, in turn, can move mountains!
