New Zealand Moa - extinct
The giant moa was one of the biggest birds ever known. It was more than three metres tall and weighed about 250 kilograms.
Reality Check - Scientists think that moa were eaten to extinction by 1500.
THE DODO BIRD. EXTINCT
As the most famous and undignified extinction in history, the end of the dodo was a wake-up call to how human interaction can ruin another species.

Location:
Amber Island, MauritiusBecause dodos were so localised, their demise was very rapid, despite the relatively small settlement of humans on the islands in the 16th century. There are some accounts of live specimens being taken to London after most of them disappeared from their native land in the early 17th century. The last widely accepted sighting of the dodo is by a sailor aboard the Dutch ship Arnhem, which was shipwrecked on Amber Island. He describes carolling a flock of the birds and capturing one with ease. There’s also a 1681 account of a sighting, which is in contention for the final sighting of the dodo.
Pyrenean ibex - Extinct
In the 14th century, the Pyrenean ibex was common throughout France, Spain, Andorra and Portugal and researchers have estimated that there were once 50,000 of these ibex in the wild.
As agriculture became more widespread, the Pyrenean ibex had more competition from farm animals such as cattle and goats. Not only were they forced to share their land, but farm animals exposed the ibex to diseases to which it had no immunity. By the late 1800s there were only 100 Pyrenean ibex left, and farmers began to report seeing ibex only two or three times a year. These ibex were also considered trophy animals and were highly prized.
Despite the dramatic decrease in numbers, they were not officially declared protected until 1973, by which time it was too late. Despite efforts to breed ibex they did not do well in captivity and by 1993 there were only 10 remaining. Within less than a decade, they had disappeared entirely.

The last Pyrenean ibex was called Celia and she was found dead in 2000 at the age of 13. Her body was found beneath a fallen tree, which had unfortunately been her end. The last male had died nine years previously, leaving the chance of breeding impossible.

A FACT ABOUT EXTINCT ANIMALS; The Black Softshell Turtle was thought to be an inbred cross species but it was recently discovered to be its own distinct species. They are considered to be extinct in the wild because the only population consists of 150 to 300 turtles that live at the Hazrat Sultan Bayazid Bastami shrine in Chittagong, Bangladesh. They are completely dependent on humans for their survival. If their numbers continue to improve, there is a chance they could eventually be released to survive in the wild someday. | Animal blog | Photo credit
10 Lesser Known Extinct Species
Extinction, no matter how you see it, is natural. But just because it is natural, doesn’t deny the fact that biodiversity is needed in the world. Humans are usually to blame for the disappearance of many species and although this is true, it is never just the one factor. Here are 10 species of extinct animals you most probably haven’t heard of that once roamed this very earth.

10 Extinct Animals That May Still Be Alive…

A FACT ABOUT EXTINCT ANIMALS; The Chinese Baiji Dolphin is believed to be extinct but is also listed as a critically endangered species, because there is a slight chance that a small amount of them remain. However if that is true, it’s believed the remaining ones are elderly and that they will soon be extinct. In 2007 a man video taped an animal that looked a lot like a Baiji. The last known confirmed Baiji died in 2002 though and there have been no guaranteed sightings since then. The Baiji was only found in the Yangtze River in China, but it is possible they can be found elsewhere and that they just have yet to be discovered there. With so many rivers and oceans, it’s possible they still do exist. While they may be endangered, that gives them a chance. | More here!
A FACT ABOUT EXTINCT ANIMALS; The Socorro Dove is a bird that is currently extinct in the wild but does remain in captivity. There are about 200 of them total with about 100 of them that are confirmed purebred Socorro Doves and not hybrids. This is great news for the species. While 100 is by no means a large number and especially for a species of bird, it is on the right track as they continue to breed in their captive and safe environments. | Animal blog | Photo credit

Ten most Beautiful Recently Extinct Breeds of Animals

17 Amazing Animals That Became Extinct In Our Lifetime
The world is a big place, one filled with creatures of every kind. We aren’t even completely aware of just how many types of animals there are on Earth. It’s hard to keep track, though, because each day we discover a new species… and each day one dies. Every year, about 10,000 different species of animals go extinct. There are some amazingly beautiful creatures that have even gone extinct in your lifetime, as depressing and unbelievable as that fact is. The animals you see below have recently gone extinct (or are thought to be extinct). It’s sad to know we’ll never see another one of these amazing animals ever again.

Killing The Planet. Book Review; Extinction: Every single vertebrate that became extinct in the last 100 years The number of extinct animals is difficult to calculate and always higher than the estimate. In some cases, a species is presumed extinct — none have been seen in years — but it’s yet to receive official extinction status by the IUCN. But the important thing to remember is that extinction is not a historical problem — it’s a contemporary issue.Below, take a look at every animal (except insects, which are extremely difficult to catalogue but which you can find here) that went extinct in just the last 100 years. The list is based on research provided bythe Sixth Extinction, a website created to “enhance free public access to information about recently extinct species,” and in order of their approximate date of extinction. We’ve included all the animals confirmed extinct by the IUCN, and added a few more declared extinct by other credible individuals and organizations. We hope this list helps you reflect on the color, diversity and magnificence of life in our world, and especially our oceans. As well as how much more colorful and diverse it might be if we took better care of natural habitats. From; http://www.desdemonadespair.net/2015/04/photo-gallery-every-single-vertebrate.html
