(( dearest diamond steven )):
It had been 7 years now since Steven was taken from Beach City as a newborn. He was snatched when he was barely a week old. Pearl and Amethyst were too weak to defend against the invaders, and were also captured as a result – they were also separated from the newborn Steven.
Once they got to Home World, Yellow Diamond decided that killing the newborn would not be a smart idea, as they had found out he was somehow immune to gem technology being half human. So she made the decision to have Steven be raised and taught gem culture on Home World so that he could later be used as a powerful weapon that could be used against enemy gem planets.
However, the Diamond Authority was not to raise the child as they were too busy; but a small pair of two lesser needed gems, Ruby and Sapphire had volunteered to take him. Ruby and Sapphire were then given Steven as their adopted son to care for and to raise. He grew up with the two gems, knowing them as his Mom’s. And thankfully due to the two, they lived a pretty happy life together.
Well. Until Steven started realizing he was different. Steven knew he was important – after all, all of the Diamond Authority visited him regularly. Most gems were lucky if they even got to look in their direction once in their lifetime. And at first, this went over the child’s head. But now? Now he knew he was different than all the gem he’d met on Homeworld.
He had noticed that there really wasn’t any gems that were considered children. They were only considered new. And even so – they seemed to grow into experienced gems fairly quickly. But him? He didn’t know the first thing about using his gem. He only knew small things like summoning his bubble. And even with the diamond’s helping him individually, he couldn’t figure it out.
It had been confusing him lately and leaving him in a saddened state. Any of the gems that worked with him and taught him things knew how Steven was, and they would clearly see that he was upset about something. He wasn’t as friendly and talkative as he usually was. Not to mention he wasn’t really talking to Ruby or Sapphire.
In fact, instead of being inside trying to see how angry he could get Ruby (to see how hot she could get), he was now sitting in the front years of their house, staring up at the sky. He had one hand over his gem and the other sprawled out on the ground.
What was wrong with him? What exactly was he?
both ruby and sapphire had noticed a change in steven lately, and
it made them worried. worried about him, worried about the authority’s
reaction to any questions he might start posing... worried about how he
might react to the ANSWERS he might get. they had both known that a
time would come when he would start asking questions, start wondering
things, but they hadn’t been nearly prepared for it. he had to be happy here,
with the authority. it was incredibly vital that he not lose hope in their vision.
the diamonds were very UNFORGIVING, that way.
sapphire pulled up the hem of her skirt as she made her way through their
home, poking her head in various rooms ( some of which only existed due
to the presence of steven, but they had been glad to make accommodations )
looking for him. he had been spending less time indoors lately... she tiptoed
outside, not intending to be as quiet as she was.
“ steven? are you alright? ”
he was sitting, by himself. that wasn’t a good sign. sapphire’s future vision
told her how this conversation would play out, but she tried to be HERE, in the
present, for steven. it was what he needed, she had learned ( over time... )
“ would you like to... TALK to me, about what’s troubling you? ” she always
hoped he would confide in her. she cared for him very much, and wanted to
be there for him. she could ease his mind about the authority, or anything! she
was sure of it.
