yeah, yeah sheâs really heard it all before, how she saved kidâs grades from plummeting and so on. it didnât really phase her anymore and she wishes she had backbone enough to stop giving up her notes, she wishes she was a scammer like her little brother who would definitely charge them for even one glance but thatâs just not who she is. sheâs nancy wheeler,  â nice girl  â imprinted on her forehead. what a label.  and itâs not like chai did anything wrong to her, he seemed like a nice person sheâs just always been cautious when it comes to new people. her eyebrow raises when he questions about tutoring and now sheâs beginning to really think about it, there wasnât any tutoring sessions going on around hawkins and she found that odd since it was exam period, maybe she could make her money that way. â yeah, i can tutor you..  â  nancy decides and gives him a friendly smile, taking back her notes. â i have free period right now, do you?  âÂ
          â...Yeah, yeah, I got a free.âÂ
He didnât expect her offer. He thought sheâd tell him some other person, some other girl. Not because he doesnât think Nancyâs capable of tutoring or anything. He just wasnât expecting it. Sheâd seemed kind of... lack luster about the notes after all. Chai doesnât really care. He just needs to get his grades back up and it being midterms and all... Heâs panicking. Heâs panicking in a way heâs never really panicked before.Â
Because Chai? Chaiâs been top of the class. Heâs at a good standing in this social ladder of high school crap. Heâs one of the star players on the baseball team. His life should be set once he graduates at the end of the year. He just has to get to it. Senior year should be a breeze, not a struggle. And yet here he is freaking out because his grades have been up and down and he just canât focus on anything. Itâs like his brain decided to take a vacation when he least needed it to.Â
Kinda feels like mid- freshman year all over again when he had been new and anxious. He pauses, frowning a little, really looking at her.Â
âWhat do I owe ya, then?â Because he must owe her something. This isnât just notes. And sheâs not in the tutoring program-- so.
Someone catching Chai having a bad cry in a shitty hiding spot? Hm.
fearhermindâ:
oh, great. yet another person that was at the party. thatâs just the thing she needed. why the fuck did it seem like everyone and their mother was at that fucking party? well, you wonât catch her at another party for at least a month.Â
â well, long story short, an asshole tossed me the pool. letâs just say me and pools, oceans, excreta, donât get along. whatsoever. â thereâs a pause as she nods, leaning back on the wall with a huff.Â
âAnâ now everyoneâs fuckinâ with ya âbout it, issat right?â Chai straightened up, unfolded his legs from the table and stood with the slightest hop. âOkay, chica, Iâmma help ya out, okay? I know, I know-- Chai, I donât know you, howâre you gonna help me, what do you know?âÂ
His voice was in a high-pitched mockery of just about any girl, not necessarily Elena. Donât take it personally, he was just up to his usual shenanigans. If she had known him, she would have noticed the quieter quality to his usually upbeat, center-of-attention demeanor.Â
âSo, this might come as a huge surprise, but I ainât from this stupid tiny town. And when I got here there was a whole shit load of rumors about me âcause my mom was kinda famous nâsheâd just passed nâthe fuckinâ reporters hounded me until I punched one of them in the face. So, here I am movinâ tâthis fuckinâ bullshit town nâeveryone nâtheir fuckinâ momâs read the tabloid. Nâtheyâre all whisperinâ shit right?â Chai paused a minute, shaking his head, making a talking hand sign.Â
âNâ it fuckinâ sucks. But thatâs all these people got. Gossip nâmakinâ people feel like shit. Because they know they ainât shit. Theyâre in the middle oâfuckinâ nowhere nâtheir lives are boring, so instead of jusâ beinâ fuckinâ chill, they gotta shit on you instead. Whatâcha gotta do is make somethinâ else bigger nâwhat theyâre talkinâ about. Do somethinâ thatâll getâem tâstop talkinâ about old news. âCause they get bored oâthat shit real quick nâhang on tâthe next thing.â Chai leaned back, hands in his pockets. âAnâ yâer talking tâthe master mind oâchanginâ rumors, so. Iâll help ya shutâem up.â
Chai's schedule is a lot and he puts tons of pressure on himself to make sure he does everything correctly. He wakes up extra early to make sure his sister gets to school on time and gives enough time for Leon to decide he wants to come with them.
He goes to every one of his baseball practices and games and even does the winter games. He takes three AP classes. He is part of two different clubs: music and film. He's president of the film club since junior year but he misses it sometimes because of baseball.
He goes to a lot of the parties thrown around Hawkins because he likes his reputation even if it means jackshit.
Around the middle of his senior year his carefully constructed schedule breaks down. He starts waking up late and Leon takes Sana to school. He forgets they switched the day for baseball practice one week and his coach tells him he needs to stop messing around. He starts zoning out when studying and failing his tests. Skips classes when his anxiety gets so bad that he's throwing up in the bathroom instead.
Seriously considers committing suicide at one point when everything hits maximum stress and asks his aunt if he could get the school to give him a week off because things are bad.
His end of year results are not awful but they're not the near-valedictorian status he was at before. He doesn't apply to any colleges and takes a year off.
Emotional problems? Jokes.
Actual physical problems? Might actually say something about it if its bothering him long enough. Like a persistent pain or dizzy spells or a headache lasting a bit too long? Yeah he get anxious about health issues cause there's a few in his family.
fearhermindâ:
oh, wow.Â
elena definitely preferred the way he said her name over any other way. red lips curled upwards into a smile, a light yet genuine laugh followed as her gaze darted down momentarily. itâs a wonder she hasnât talked to him before. crossing one leg over the other, she shook her head. â oh, no. continue to say it your way. no complaints coming from me. â
elena hums, carefully listening to him. janet? she was on the cheer team. your typical mean cheerleader bitch type. arching an eyebrow, she straightened her dress out, turning her full focus to him.  â janet? oh, yeah. sheâs a bitch. i think sheâs still mad because i took her spot as head cheerleader. but, yâknow what they say. karmaâs a bitch. but, i happen to like your jacket.  â
okay, now itâs her turn. â iâm pretty sure you heard the rumors but i had a itsy bitsy freak out at a party on friday, â more like a full on panic attack. â and now iâm the talk of the school. new head cheerleader terrified of pools. â
Oh, yeah--thereâs the smile. The little bashful drop of her gaze. Chai knew as soon as he said just about anything in just the right tone in Spanish, heâd have girls swooning over him. Shit, if he tried hard enough, he could out-do Harrington with his stupid hair obsession. But Chaiâs not really a womanizer. He can play the part, sure, and he has. But he likes to get to know people too much. He likes to dote and fall in love. Heâs friends with his exes. âBien. Vaya.âÂ
Chai blinks. He hadnât really expected her to go into it. He felt kind of like an ass for making up something so inane, but it was too late to take it back. Heâd been at the party on Friday. He knew exactly what she was talking about. How Harrington had helped her out the pool and something about her freaking out at having been thrown in. Shit he didnât really pay attention to, because why would he bother? It wasnât really any of his problem. Everyone was way too into everyoneâs business in this town. He didnât understand it.Â
âYeah... I was... I was at that party.â Chai admitted. âI didnâ see what happened, pero, yâknow. Everyoneâs always talkinâ. I donât get into anyoneâs business like that, though. Shit happens. Mâsorry everyoneâs on yâer ass.â Chai rubbed the back of his neck. âI donât really give fuck about the jacket. Jusâ been real hard tâday. Everybodyâs been askinâ me for shit nâI been gettinâ real dizzy nâ it was weird so I...needed a minute.âÂ
friends w/benefits? yes?
fearhermindâ:
elena wonders if heâs heard the rumors about her. heard the whispers. then again, how could you not? itâs all she could hear. everywhere she went. though, thereâs one particular whisper that lead her away from it all and into this room.Â
what do you think happened to her parents?Â
jesus, she wasnât sure if she was going to scream or cry. well, if he knew anything, he didnât seem to want to mention it and neither did she. another light laugh escaped her lips at him words. brushing a few strands of hair behind her ear, she turned to face him. â oh, yeah? iâm feeling real special then. iâm elena, by the way. â
âElena.â He said it with the Spanish accent clear and almost flirty. âOr do ya like it better your way? Eh-lay-nuh.â He was teasing, elongating the very Anglicized way in which everyone said her name. Chai shifted a little more comfortably on his not-seat.Â
âSo, Elena. What brings ya tâthe Sad Afternoon Club?â Chai canted his head to the side, dark bangs falling away from his face at the movement. âI cân start if ya want.â He didnât let her say anything, wanting to set up the rules of the game they were playing. If they were gonna be brooding in here together, might as well make it worth it, right?
âJanet Carlton? She said my jacket was ugly nâthat really hurt my feelings. I put a lotta work intâ this jacket. Yâknow what I had tâdo tâget it? I had tâtake my car all the way tâthe shops nâlook fâer one. It was so hard too, âcause it was on the mannequin and it was the last one. Shouldnâ be disrespected like that.â Chai managed the fake serious look before breaking a little. âWhaâs yer damage?âÂ
Between the ages of 13 and 15, right before he moved out of New York and to Hawkins, Chai was mixed up in some gang problems arising in the South Bronx. Despite his parents being well off, his father had two apartments. One in Manhattan and one in the Bronx. It had been in a very good neighborhood once upon a time, but the 70s was a difficult era and the Bronx was burning.Â
Chai was never in with any gangs but he was in the neighborhood and around the right age. He had to be careful not to piss off the wrong people, but he did somehow anyway.
Chai has a few scars to prove it-- one in his left abdomen, the other in shoulder and a few more on his hands. Theyâre fairly noticeable as they are light against his dark skin.
redeemedprickâ:
For a moment, Billy was taken aback by Chaiâs breezy demeanor. People didnât do shit like that around him. Or at least, not here in Hawkins. There was something about this guy that reminded him of an old friend back in California. But Jack was dead â heâd O.D.âd like the dumb sonofabitch he was â so Billy didnât bother dwelling on that anymore.
He snorted under his breath, choosing to ignore the rhetorical question. âUnless the surprise is a chick jumping out of a cake, I donât see this being a âlife-changing weekend,ââ Billy muttered. âBut fine. Iâll give you the chance to live up to that claim, seeing how thereâs booze involved.â
The guy was fucking following him. Wasnât the conversation over and done with?
Rolling his eyes, he placed a cigarette between his lips and dug around in his pockets. âIs Sara Mallory gonna be there? âCause I kinda-sorta fucked her sister, and I donât need that drama tonight.â He shrugged. âCome to think of it, Iâve probably dicked around with most of the girls coming. Iâll just wear a protective cup.â
âThaâs one heck of an idea, Hargrove. Too bad this is shitty small town. Couldâa hooked that up back in New York.â
Was he exaggerating? Maybe, maybe not. Chaiâs aunt had connections in the entertainment industry. He had played around with some modeling before theyâd left. Not to mention the âfriendsâ heâd made in some of those dull parties he would get dragged to. To keep his mom company because she hated them and Sana was still too young.Â
Chai took a few steps away from Billy, further down the school steps. He wanted to get the hell out of here, spend some time with Sana and then make sure she had plans or something. He arched a brow, a smirk spreading on his lips.
âAinât everyone fuck her? Careful, man. Ya know what they say about the ladies. Yâer gonna end up caught up with some small town witch nâ a real itch in the pants.â He turned in one smooth motion, not bothering to check what effect that would have. He tossed a hand in the air, half peace-sign, half wave. âCheck ya later, Hargrove. Hope tâsee ya at the party.â
Uhm Chai's dad being one of the few privy to information and oversight of project mkultra? His personal feelings led him to being glad the project was shut down? But due to his wife's sister living in Indiana knew about Hawkins Lab and the continued experiments?
Maybe. Idk.

Chai is an all around player but really likes pitching. He's good at it and his best throw is the curve ball.
Chai has some gorgeous thick hair and doesn't put anything it. Just runs his hands through his hair. Deep conditions once a week. It's wavy and he likes wearing the bangs long, usually side swept. Let's it grow out to his shoulder after high school.

âHereâs the deal, Harrington,â Chai announced as he leaned against the side of Steveâs locker. âIf we gotta do this stupid project together, you ainât puttinâ all the shit on me tâdo. I know when you got practice, nâya know when I got practice. NâI know damn well you wouldnât be caught dead in any oâthem clubs.âÂ
He hated paired projects. He hated group projects. And he doubly hated getting shoved with Steve Harrington. Not cause he disliked the guy. That wasnât it-- he didnât know him all that well. Just that he was at the top of the social ladder and Chai was just a few rungs below him. Popular enough to sit at the cool kidâs table, not popular enough to be bothered.
