yeah, yeah she’s really heard it all before, how she saved kid’s grades from plummeting and so on. it didn’t really phase her anymore and she wishes she had backbone enough to stop giving up her notes, she wishes she was a scammer like her little brother who would definitely charge them for even one glance but that’s just not who she is. she’s nancy wheeler, ‘ nice girl ‘ imprinted on her forehead. what a label. and it’s not like chai did anything wrong to her, he seemed like a nice person she’s just always been cautious when it comes to new people. her eyebrow raises when he questions about tutoring and now she’s beginning to really think about it, there wasn’t any tutoring sessions going on around hawkins and she found that odd since it was exam period, maybe she could make her money that way. “ yeah, i can tutor you.. “ nancy decides and gives him a friendly smile, taking back her notes. “ i have free period right now, do you? “
“...Yeah, yeah, I got a free.”
He didn’t expect her offer. He thought she’d tell him some other person, some other girl. Not because he doesn’t think Nancy’s capable of tutoring or anything. He just wasn’t expecting it. She’d seemed kind of... lack luster about the notes after all. Chai doesn’t really care. He just needs to get his grades back up and it being midterms and all... He’s panicking. He’s panicking in a way he’s never really panicked before.
Because Chai? Chai’s been top of the class. He’s at a good standing in this social ladder of high school crap. He’s one of the star players on the baseball team. His life should be set once he graduates at the end of the year. He just has to get to it. Senior year should be a breeze, not a struggle. And yet here he is freaking out because his grades have been up and down and he just can’t focus on anything. It’s like his brain decided to take a vacation when he least needed it to.
Kinda feels like mid- freshman year all over again when he had been new and anxious. He pauses, frowning a little, really looking at her.
“What do I owe ya, then?” Because he must owe her something. This isn’t just notes. And she’s not in the tutoring program-- so.
Someone catching Chai having a bad cry in a shitty hiding spot? Hm.
fearhermind:
oh, great. yet another person that was at the party. that’s just the thing she needed. why the fuck did it seem like everyone and their mother was at that fucking party? well, you won’t catch her at another party for at least a month.
❝ well, long story short, an asshole tossed me the pool. let’s just say me and pools, oceans, excreta, don’t get along. whatsoever. ❞ there’s a pause as she nods, leaning back on the wall with a huff.
“An’ now everyone’s fuckin’ with ya ‘bout it, issat right?” Chai straightened up, unfolded his legs from the table and stood with the slightest hop. “Okay, chica, I’mma help ya out, okay? I know, I know-- Chai, I don’t know you, how’re you gonna help me, what do you know?”
His voice was in a high-pitched mockery of just about any girl, not necessarily Elena. Don’t take it personally, he was just up to his usual shenanigans. If she had known him, she would have noticed the quieter quality to his usually upbeat, center-of-attention demeanor.
“So, this might come as a huge surprise, but I ain’t from this stupid tiny town. And when I got here there was a whole shit load of rumors about me ‘cause my mom was kinda famous n’she’d just passed n’the fuckin’ reporters hounded me until I punched one of them in the face. So, here I am movin’ t’this fuckin’ bullshit town n’everyone n’their fuckin’ mom’s read the tabloid. N’they’re all whisperin’ shit right?” Chai paused a minute, shaking his head, making a talking hand sign.
“N’ it fuckin’ sucks. But that’s all these people got. Gossip n’makin’ people feel like shit. Because they know they ain’t shit. They’re in the middle o’fuckin’ nowhere n’their lives are boring, so instead of jus’ bein’ fuckin’ chill, they gotta shit on you instead. What’cha gotta do is make somethin’ else bigger n’what they’re talkin’ about. Do somethin’ that’ll get’em t’stop talkin’ about old news. ‘Cause they get bored o’that shit real quick n’hang on t’the next thing.” Chai leaned back, hands in his pockets. “An’ y’er talking t’the master mind o’changin’ rumors, so. I’ll help ya shut’em up.”
Chai's schedule is a lot and he puts tons of pressure on himself to make sure he does everything correctly. He wakes up extra early to make sure his sister gets to school on time and gives enough time for Leon to decide he wants to come with them.
He goes to every one of his baseball practices and games and even does the winter games. He takes three AP classes. He is part of two different clubs: music and film. He's president of the film club since junior year but he misses it sometimes because of baseball.
He goes to a lot of the parties thrown around Hawkins because he likes his reputation even if it means jackshit.
Around the middle of his senior year his carefully constructed schedule breaks down. He starts waking up late and Leon takes Sana to school. He forgets they switched the day for baseball practice one week and his coach tells him he needs to stop messing around. He starts zoning out when studying and failing his tests. Skips classes when his anxiety gets so bad that he's throwing up in the bathroom instead.
Seriously considers committing suicide at one point when everything hits maximum stress and asks his aunt if he could get the school to give him a week off because things are bad.
His end of year results are not awful but they're not the near-valedictorian status he was at before. He doesn't apply to any colleges and takes a year off.
Emotional problems? Jokes.
Actual physical problems? Might actually say something about it if its bothering him long enough. Like a persistent pain or dizzy spells or a headache lasting a bit too long? Yeah he get anxious about health issues cause there's a few in his family.
fearhermind:
oh, wow.
elena definitely preferred the way he said her name over any other way. red lips curled upwards into a smile, a light yet genuine laugh followed as her gaze darted down momentarily. it’s a wonder she hasn’t talked to him before. crossing one leg over the other, she shook her head. ❝ oh, no. continue to say it your way. no complaints coming from me. ❞
elena hums, carefully listening to him. janet? she was on the cheer team. your typical mean cheerleader bitch type. arching an eyebrow, she straightened her dress out, turning her full focus to him. ❝ janet? oh, yeah. she’s a bitch. i think she’s still mad because i took her spot as head cheerleader. but, y’know what they say. karma’s a bitch. but, i happen to like your jacket. ❞
okay, now it’s her turn. ❝ i’m pretty sure you heard the rumors but i had a itsy bitsy freak out at a party on friday, ❞ more like a full on panic attack. ❝ and now i’m the talk of the school. new head cheerleader terrified of pools. ❞
Oh, yeah--there’s the smile. The little bashful drop of her gaze. Chai knew as soon as he said just about anything in just the right tone in Spanish, he’d have girls swooning over him. Shit, if he tried hard enough, he could out-do Harrington with his stupid hair obsession. But Chai’s not really a womanizer. He can play the part, sure, and he has. But he likes to get to know people too much. He likes to dote and fall in love. He’s friends with his exes. “Bien. Vaya.”
Chai blinks. He hadn’t really expected her to go into it. He felt kind of like an ass for making up something so inane, but it was too late to take it back. He’d been at the party on Friday. He knew exactly what she was talking about. How Harrington had helped her out the pool and something about her freaking out at having been thrown in. Shit he didn’t really pay attention to, because why would he bother? It wasn’t really any of his problem. Everyone was way too into everyone’s business in this town. He didn’t understand it.
“Yeah... I was... I was at that party.” Chai admitted. “I didn’ see what happened, pero, y’know. Everyone’s always talkin’. I don’t get into anyone’s business like that, though. Shit happens. M’sorry everyone’s on y’er ass.” Chai rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t really give fuck about the jacket. Jus’ been real hard t’day. Everybody’s been askin’ me for shit n’I been gettin’ real dizzy n’ it was weird so I...needed a minute.”
friends w/benefits? yes?
fearhermind:
elena wonders if he’s heard the rumors about her. heard the whispers. then again, how could you not? it’s all she could hear. everywhere she went. though, there’s one particular whisper that lead her away from it all and into this room.
what do you think happened to her parents?
jesus, she wasn’t sure if she was going to scream or cry. well, if he knew anything, he didn’t seem to want to mention it and neither did she. another light laugh escaped her lips at him words. brushing a few strands of hair behind her ear, she turned to face him. ❝ oh, yeah? i’m feeling real special then. i’m elena, by the way. ❞
“Elena.” He said it with the Spanish accent clear and almost flirty. “Or do ya like it better your way? Eh-lay-nuh.” He was teasing, elongating the very Anglicized way in which everyone said her name. Chai shifted a little more comfortably on his not-seat.
“So, Elena. What brings ya t’the Sad Afternoon Club?” Chai canted his head to the side, dark bangs falling away from his face at the movement. “I c’n start if ya want.” He didn’t let her say anything, wanting to set up the rules of the game they were playing. If they were gonna be brooding in here together, might as well make it worth it, right?
“Janet Carlton? She said my jacket was ugly n’that really hurt my feelings. I put a lotta work int’ this jacket. Y’know what I had t’do t’get it? I had t’take my car all the way t’the shops n’look f’er one. It was so hard too, ‘cause it was on the mannequin and it was the last one. Shouldn’ be disrespected like that.” Chai managed the fake serious look before breaking a little. “Wha’s yer damage?”
Between the ages of 13 and 15, right before he moved out of New York and to Hawkins, Chai was mixed up in some gang problems arising in the South Bronx. Despite his parents being well off, his father had two apartments. One in Manhattan and one in the Bronx. It had been in a very good neighborhood once upon a time, but the 70s was a difficult era and the Bronx was burning.
Chai was never in with any gangs but he was in the neighborhood and around the right age. He had to be careful not to piss off the wrong people, but he did somehow anyway.
Chai has a few scars to prove it-- one in his left abdomen, the other in shoulder and a few more on his hands. They’re fairly noticeable as they are light against his dark skin.
redeemedprick:
For a moment, Billy was taken aback by Chai’s breezy demeanor. People didn’t do shit like that around him. Or at least, not here in Hawkins. There was something about this guy that reminded him of an old friend back in California. But Jack was dead – he’d O.D.’d like the dumb sonofabitch he was – so Billy didn’t bother dwelling on that anymore.
He snorted under his breath, choosing to ignore the rhetorical question. “Unless the surprise is a chick jumping out of a cake, I don’t see this being a ‘life-changing weekend,’” Billy muttered. “But fine. I’ll give you the chance to live up to that claim, seeing how there’s booze involved.”
The guy was fucking following him. Wasn’t the conversation over and done with?
Rolling his eyes, he placed a cigarette between his lips and dug around in his pockets. “Is Sara Mallory gonna be there? ‘Cause I kinda-sorta fucked her sister, and I don’t need that drama tonight.” He shrugged. “Come to think of it, I’ve probably dicked around with most of the girls coming. I’ll just wear a protective cup.”
“Tha’s one heck of an idea, Hargrove. Too bad this is shitty small town. Could’a hooked that up back in New York.”
Was he exaggerating? Maybe, maybe not. Chai’s aunt had connections in the entertainment industry. He had played around with some modeling before they’d left. Not to mention the ‘friends’ he’d made in some of those dull parties he would get dragged to. To keep his mom company because she hated them and Sana was still too young.
Chai took a few steps away from Billy, further down the school steps. He wanted to get the hell out of here, spend some time with Sana and then make sure she had plans or something. He arched a brow, a smirk spreading on his lips.
“Ain’t everyone fuck her? Careful, man. Ya know what they say about the ladies. Y’er gonna end up caught up with some small town witch n’ a real itch in the pants.” He turned in one smooth motion, not bothering to check what effect that would have. He tossed a hand in the air, half peace-sign, half wave. “Check ya later, Hargrove. Hope t’see ya at the party.”
Uhm Chai's dad being one of the few privy to information and oversight of project mkultra? His personal feelings led him to being glad the project was shut down? But due to his wife's sister living in Indiana knew about Hawkins Lab and the continued experiments?
Maybe. Idk.

Chai is an all around player but really likes pitching. He's good at it and his best throw is the curve ball.
Chai has some gorgeous thick hair and doesn't put anything it. Just runs his hands through his hair. Deep conditions once a week. It's wavy and he likes wearing the bangs long, usually side swept. Let's it grow out to his shoulder after high school.

“Here’s the deal, Harrington,” Chai announced as he leaned against the side of Steve’s locker. “If we gotta do this stupid project together, you ain’t puttin’ all the shit on me t’do. I know when you got practice, n’ya know when I got practice. N’I know damn well you wouldn’t be caught dead in any o’them clubs.”
He hated paired projects. He hated group projects. And he doubly hated getting shoved with Steve Harrington. Not cause he disliked the guy. That wasn’t it-- he didn’t know him all that well. Just that he was at the top of the social ladder and Chai was just a few rungs below him. Popular enough to sit at the cool kid’s table, not popular enough to be bothered.
“We c’n do today or Thursday. Your place or mine.”
