I believe the best advice I can give to a girl wanting to go into engineering is not even to work hard, but to be able to ignore the sexist comments of her classmates.
I think it depends on the schools and the countries, but in my school there are only two of us girls, and luckily we get along really well to forget about those idiots because honestly, it's enough to drive you crazy
Here are a few examples I lived through based on my two years at this engineering school :
-"Don't listen to her , she's only a woman" when i wanted to give them indication because they missed what the teacher said
-a guy asking to see my calves and adding "c'mon that's not a sexual thing"
-the same guy who once I had to follow with some of my class to catch the bus because I didn't know the place, thinking it was funny to joke about the fact that "I shouldn't follow them blindly and trust them because maybe they could all rape me"
-Also him thinking it's good to tell me that i gained weight and my friend that she neglect herself and no one like that
-having a guy slapping me because i dropped his glasses (he was wearing his + mine) *i have a video of it*
-saying that my biggest problem is that i'm a woman
+++They were mean to one of our classmates who was disabled and needed to take the elevator. They thought it was funny to take the elevator before him, so they pressed the button on each floor while he was inside.
++++ they make racist jokes , islamophobia etc....
Some people would said "just ignore them" bug when your a class of only 15 people , it's hard to ignore especially when they love bekng loud and teachers saying nothing to them because they have good grades (and half of them are cheating)
I'm lucky that this year i found my little safe space with my friend and some other because this may sound like nothing bit this whole toxic atmosphere sometimes didn't make me wanna go to class at all :((
Hopefully half of them will be gone next year so that's a small win for me
