We are a congregation of farmers/growers, herbalists, chefs, winemakers and artists growing native to the foothills of Barnard, VT. Fable Farm is a fermentory, a venue, and a culinary company providing farm fresh prepared foods for various cultural events held on the farm. In the fermentory we aim to procure medicinally potent wines from local fruits, herbs, saps, and honey. In the kitchen we use fresh wholesome food sourced directly from our farm and partner farms. We host art events, theatre and live music for the public to enjoy the fruits of rural culture, and also host intimate private events such as weddings and dinner parties on the farm. The Royal Frog Ballet Surrealist Cabaret is a walking performance and installation event that takes the audiences through the gorgeous farm landscape at autumnal sunset… See these unique performances on the evenings of Friday September 29, Saturday September 30 & Sunday October 1.

Please arrive by 4:30 to be ready when the performance begins. Fable Farm will be serving a Hearty Soup & Corn Bread (with Heartwood Farm's Corn), as well as beer, wine and our ciders before and after the performances. (Food and drinks are not included in the ticket price.)

A Local Celebration of Food & Community in Barnard, Vermont

Each Thursday, beginning June 1st, the farmers host Feast & Field Farmers' Market from 4:30 until 7:30 PM at 1544 Royalton Turnpike in Barnard, Vermont. It is a lively farmers' market featuring the eclectic BarnArts Thursday Music Series, sustained by guests' donations.

We’re feeling the pulse of the peepers up here in the upper watershed of the Broad Brook. The drip drop of sap is pooling in buckets along the Turnpike, levitating out of Birch trees in concert with the Spring Surge. And Oh! what a surge this spring has sprung. As we rise from the ashes of our equinoctial farmhouse fire, we’re dancing with new beginnings.

Warmed by the north-rising sun, the ground is finally beginning to shed winter’s melt from its bosom, welcoming the mélange of wild, waking seeds. While our young apple and pear trees are budding a promising inaugural  fruit set, we’re busy grafting and transplanting perry and cider varietals to join the fleet for future harvests. The ring of elder apple trees rooted as century-old totems on our farm, have received their restorative pruning for the year, some of which were adapted with top-grafts of new varietals in their canopy. Schizandra seeds are slowly waking in pots we left out to endure the freeze thaw cycle of Winter’s end, the berries of which we’re excited to fold into our fermentory recipes for their incredible medicinal and five flavor attributes. Cuttings of elderberry, currant, seaberry and quince too are coming into being, as we tend our path towards a perennial landscape of fruit for future wines, tonics, and vinegars.  

As we get ready to bottle last season’s birch sap mead, we’re  procuring this year’s expression, blending freshly gleaned birch sap with golden honey from McFarline Apiary.  Our wine cave currently sits as a place of incredible abundance, unaffected by the extreme temperature fluctuations of a waking landscape above; apple, honey, and grape wines aging in barrel, bottle, tank, and demijohn, wait patiently for their journey back to the light-filled glass. As our farm and fermentory flow in stride with seasonal rhythms, our markets are beginning to broaden. We’ve recently sent out a new fleet of apple wines around the state, while also reaching outside of Vermont borders for the first time, linking up with niche distributors of living wine. To this end, we’re discovering the need to begin bottling larger blends, and have been scheming and gearing up for our spring-time bottling spree. We’re primed and excited to begin increasing the flow of bottles out of the fermentory, sharing the fruits of our labor with the world.

We’re excited to announce the season’s schedule of tasting events at our new fermentory gathering space on the farm.

We’ll be hosting a series of small plate wine sampling gatherings and family style wine based dinners. Ingredients for our food offerings are primarily sourced from Feast and Field member farms. We look forward to these opportunities for friends and community to join us in the fermentory for nourishment and merriment. In addition to these wine and cider based events at the fermentory, we will also be pouring our ferments at a number of special events throughout the season. Chloe Powell has been working hard designing an exciting events schedule for this summer, including a mini-festival and a couple of other weekend performances. Edythe Wright is curating an eight artist sculpture show for the farm, The Royal Frog Ballet is coming back at the end of September, and the summer Feast & Field markets are just a month away!

At a crossroads of farm and fermentory we humbly stand, united with the cellar through our work on land; from fruit to flower the honey bee delights in natures sway, from apple to maple we harvest every which way.

In sunlight we shine, through chlorophyll we heal, with sugar we grow, to microbes we pray; and Wine is born, as is any body conceived of Spirit, rendered conscious by the Microbrial Matrix, frothing forth an aqueous fire - magnetically becoming and then descending deep through gravity’s keep, kept cool by the Yin of Earth, stable, yet refining over time; to be unearthed by yet another hand of time, and called forth by the spirit of now, we draw from our casks: a crystalline Wine.

We are farmers turned winemakers situated in the rich hills of Barnard, VT.  We’ve been farming vegetables and hosting community galas for the last 7 years, and making cider (as wine) with a blend of wild, abandoned apples since 2009. We began selling cider commercially from our farm markets/community gatherings in 2014. We currently produce cider, and experiment with meads, maple wines, perry and other country wines. As farmers and fermentors, we're inspired by the spirit of horticulture and alchemy as we strive to produce medicinally potent wines. All of our ciders are made from a blend of cider apples gleaned by us throughout Vermont, fermented by yeasts native to the fruit, and then aged to smoothness. We're currently growing over five hundred nursery apple and pear trees to be planted into perennial agrosystems on our cooperatively managed farm in Barnard. In the meantime, we're enjoying the process of rediscovering the rich heritage of cider apple trees growing in abundance throughout these verdant foothills of Central Vermont. Most of our ciders are pleasantly dry, tart and pair well with feasts and merrymaking. Our supply of cider is limited to the purity and phenomena of the farm and seasons.

The era of wild apples will soon be over. I wander through old orchards of great extent, now all gone to decay, all of native fruit which for the most part went to the cider-mill. But since the temperance reform and the general introduction of grafted fruit, no wild apples, such as I see everywhere in deserted pastures, and where the woods have grown up among them, are set out. JOIN US EVERY THURSDAY through October from 4:30-7;30 at the Feast and Field Market featuring great vendors and music every week. This unique farmer's market is located on the Royalton Turnpike in Barnard between East Barnard and Sayer Roads. Visit our page for more information. When brothers Christopher and Jon Piana started their CSA farm in 2008 they named their farm Fable Farm for the power of story. Their weekly CSA pick-ups grew each year in size, and attracted a multi-generational community who gathered together around food and music in their Barnard Village setting. Now a new story is emerging in the back-fields of the Clark Farm in Barnard, one of collaboration, and friendship, learning, and growth. Though many still refer to it as Fable Farm, Four family farms including Heartwood Farm, Eastman Farm, and Kiss the Cow farm, are working with the land trust to access the Clark Farm on the Royalton Turnpike, and together are hosting the Feast and Field Market, a farmers market venue every Thursday. The farmers market features fresh and prepared food in the form of tacos, and fine arts and crafts and is growing in size and reputation. The weekly musical schedule features musicians from jazz to classical to bluegrass, and rock.

Winter CSA Shares of Storage Crops - Options and Prices Please spread the word of our Winter CSA program of storage crops. This is a great opportunity to fill up on local nutrients, sourced from the sun and densely packed into storage vegetables, during the dormant months. Below are our Winter CSA options. 2013 Summer CSA Shares

The time is now, to begin signing up for 2013 Summer CSA shares.

For those of you planning to join us for another season of nourishing vegetables and festivities, please send along your $50 deposits to reserve your shares. Folks in a position of being able to pay the full amount of a share now, are encouraged to do so, as we are in our financially lean months, and the costs of production are chiming away. As always, we're open to payment plans. The cost of a share for at least 20 weeks of vegetables including all the You-Pick offerings is the same as last year: a sliding scale of $400-$650. Pay what you may.
