“How’s the charmonille?” Louis asked, as they took their first sip of the Fodlan-brew they purchased. Louis looked around. It was dark in the courtyard they found themselves in, though the love of other couples that snuck out of the party made it lively. Louis wondered whether others would see him accompanying Sir Leif as a date as well, and he quickly wondered whether he himself wanted it to be.
“I do have to say in advance that my advice might not be applicable to all groups of soldiers.” Louis said, taking a preliminary sip from his tea to test the waters. “So you might come out of this woefully disappointed.” he said, curving his lips around the cup once again in a sleek smile.
“But at least when it came to the army of the Divine One, it consisted of soldiers of many different backgrounds. Commoners and nobles all took up their arms and had eachothers back on the battlefield, many of them from different cultures as well. On the battlefield, a single miscommunication or gesture not picked up on can be fatal.” Louis gestured himself as if to say “As you well know”
“Outside of battle, these miscommunications are much less fatal, so you could see any sort of social interaction as training, any cross-cultural conversation as a clash.”
Huh, he never thought of it that way before. Usually Louis found himself just very nosy when it comes to people.
“Hopefully I answered your question to your satisfaction. Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to hear an anecdote from you. Stretch those muscles a bit.”
“ It tastes like tea, ” Leif answers after taking his first sip. “ Well, a bit sweeter than some I'm used to. It's not bad though. I feel like I can concentrate a bit better after drinking it. ”
It is less his words and more the way his expression brightens, a quiet curiosity contrasted with a wide grin, that gives his true feelings— more than he could truly put into words or understand himself.
It provides a good background as he listens to Louis regale him his description, nodding along with it.
“ So I should talk more to people and watch them to understand them better in battle. If I understand people, then it'll be easier to use their strengths and plan around their weaknesses. ” Though he said that easily, his spirit dims. “ Ah, but talking to people is harder... I guess that's why people watching works better. I see.
“ You answered my question fine. An anecdote in return though... I'm not particularly used to talking about myself. ” Or at least on the spot like this, not that he's against trying. Louis had given him something interesting to think about after all.
So he poses a question in the aims of narrowing his focus. “ What kind of stories do you want to hear? Are there certain types of things better than others? ”
Louis found himself staring. Not in the usual way, this was close quarters combat so to speak in opposition of his long range, vantage-spot-covering visual socializing. But something about how Sir Leif seemed to relax had a relaxing effect on Louis too. His gears didn’t turn in anticipation of semantic clues to determine what it meant. What it all meant, this whole socializing thing in person. It was a contentful feeling and he almost found himself connected to Leif in ways other than the role of advisor or bird’s eye view.
And even better, he didn’t feel like there were any social roles; no one was “better” at it than the other. He didn’t feel like guiding people into his worldview anymore in order to make them feel like the stranger in this world. Leif spoke his language, in a dialect Louis didn’t suppose existed.
“Anything that makes you as excited as social habits and people-watching makes me. Something that feels ever-flowing and omni-present in your mind. You might be surprised at what connections you find when you open up and find no one inhibiting your enthusiasm.”
Je M’En Fousball (Open for @ashenprofessor) [Heavy Armor v Gaunlets +1]
Louis was used to making himself small: Keeping his distance got him a much larger perspective of the world and the human connections that make the earth go round. The small joys in life didn’t just refer to his favorite tea, or a sunny day, but also to the way joy comes around to those that don’t rate themselves higher than others.
But all of that was metaphorical, and now he found himself literally smaller… and he doubted this to be a matter of perspective.
Somehow, he did make sense of it. The elements in this particular scene were abstract, to say the least, with a water-creature and a sentient tornado playing the leads, neither of em possessing any human qualities at a first glance. Their interactions reminded Louis of a tale as old as time, as he gripped his lance tight. The amphibic aristocrat handed him a bo-staff-like weapon with two bubbles perched on each end, as well as a globous suit of armor that turned Louis into a grape-like gladiator. The objective was clear: Louis had to show water’s windy frenemy that he was the better nutcracker of the toy store.
Still adapting to the change in size, Byleth was surprised the effects the elements had on them now they were smaller. Being swept away but what was really only a brief gust of wind had come as a shock. Getting to their feet to see where they’d landed, Byleth recognised the sand covered floor as that befitting an arena. This was confirmed by looking up and seeing a heavily armoured opponent facing them down.
Little time to question just what the hell was happening, the former Mercenary was led over to a weapons rack with the clear instruction to prepare. Spotting a pair of gauntlets, Byleth put them on, choosing to forgo the heavy looking armours suit for some lighter bracers and chest piece. Better for movement, particularly with her lighter frame.
Once ready a wispy noble type approached them. “You fight for me” They told them, their voice quiet but commanding. “Win and I return you to where you were before. You will not loose” Before leaving, they touched Byleth’s gauntlets causing them to become embued with some sort of power.
Nodding seriously, Byleth looked behind their commander to assess the opposition. There was a brief flair of pity for them before the cool feeling of focus depended on them. They had a fight to win.
”This does not bode well.” Louis thought to himself. A quick and nimble fighter entered the arena and seemed to pick out their weapons with a keen sense of their abilities and their personal strengths. This was a warrior, and one with a collosal conviction in their own power at that. Peace talks were not an option: The tables were set and battle was on the menu.
In an attempt to get it over with, Louis charged forward with his lance, already anticipating for his adversary to dodge the blow.
the mice that bind us (ethereal ball 2023)
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Louis has fantasized about a party with a *sizeable* theme. After all, any ball is a diorama that highlights those things that all humans share and those that sets them apart from eachother. Plus, Louis has often fashioned his behavior after that of a fly on the wall in these events (once he was done organizing various doo-dads.)
Still, their new elemental acquaintances doling out this new environment as if it were a quest or a chore was most positively unsettling and far from the organic symphony events like these are, though the irony of having his social interactions watched and measured did not go past Louis. Do people really see him like this? It was a ménage-a-trois of people watching, and being the middle man did not sit well with him.
The flower necklace was exactly his taste though, and once the initial discomfort were to wash away, the new elemental overlords watching over them offered a fresh new take on his people-watching, and the elemental grouping had all sorts of interesting implications should there have been rhyme and reason to it. If the ordeal was meant to be like a karmic punishment, then punishing Louis with a ball is like having a rat cook the dishes: It doesn’t make sense with what we know of the world. Watch and be watched, or was it eat and be eaten. Only one way to find out. The show must go on.

“Suspicious, no, not of them in particular.’’ he blurted out. Right, he thought to himself, and verbalized the rest of his internal monologue: “The practical side of people watching isn’t spotting spies, per se, as much as it is about spotting morale.” he said, trying to frame his peculiar hobby in terms of team-building and battle. “People say an army is only as strong as its weakest link, but a weak link is very rarely a specific individual. It can be the ties that bind us together instead.”
Louis reflected. He was better suited for peace time.
“Let’s find our tea, shall we. Hopefully we will be able to settle on our blend faster than they did.”
“ So you people watch to help make an army better? I guess I haven't done that before... ” Should he have done that? “ Alright, let's look for tea. But when we drink, can you tell me how you find those weak ties? How do you tell? ”
He's missed the cues before, being forced to notice only when morale's already too low. If he can learn from this though...
“ You two! Are you looking for tea? ” a vendor shouts to them, signaling them to come closer. “ I've got stocks from all over Fódlan and more! ”
Leif looks to Louis then. “ I guess that's us! ”

roses are red, violence is due (i asked for grape hyacinths and these are just blue) [Open for @firelles]
“As the Ethereal Ball is only a little ways away, students and staff are doing their best to prepare via dancing lessons, outfit shopping, and event planning. This year a vendor arrives in town with a wagon full of flowers from all over the world in full bloom. They’re quite the romantic though, so luckily for you, they’re even offering corsage and boutonniere lessons. gift your crush, significant other, sworn enemy, or whoever it may be a lovely floral arrangement that you hand-picked and handmade! They won’t judge if it looks ugly, but.. maybe the person next to you is better at arranging
It was unusual for Louis to have a burning sense of pride or entitlement. Seeing Lady Céline or any of his other comrades content was his ultimate goal, so he was always willing to step away and efface himself to let others shine through. But with these cirumstances; a flower vendor coming into town and with a ball to organize, Louis couldn’t help but feel that bit of national pride in Firene’s sense of aesthetics and his own sense of etiquette. This job had Louie’s name all over it.
“Hello good sir, do you have any grape hyacinths?” Louis asked. They were his mother’s favorites and combined with peonies, they could make a lovely arrangement.
The vendor said something about corsages and boutonnières. No need for those just yet.
“No, no, they’re for decorating purposes actually.” Louis smiled attentively. What kind of florist worth his salt is using hyacinths to craft a corsage? Besides, these flowers needed to be resistant to the potentially harsh weather coming their way. Louis tried to shake off this feeling that prevented him from asking questions and being open-minded, but was stuck in his floral-induced wrath instead.
This didn’t improve upon being handed the flowers. Sure, they were hyacinths, but they were not grape at all, having more of a cerulean look to them. Probably a different pH-value of the soil, but unless they sold eggshell-white peonies, it wouldn’t fit the theme at all. Furthermore, the stems weren’t trimmed: No way they could be strung through the seating arrangement cards. This wasn’t an issue, but it did require someone who was good at crafts, which Louis was not.
He was going to need help with this. Just when it seemed the cavalry arrived, the person browsing over the flowers next to him was the person he was least enthusiastic about asking for help: His liege.
“Good day Lady Céline!” Louis said. “I got these flowers for decorating, but I’m going to need some help with crafting these in accessories.” Louis said, immediately regretting not giving her the option to browse flowers at her own leisure. “Of course, I’d be glad to assist you in your flower needs as well. Whatever you prefer, as usual.”
The vendor tried to speak up, but Louis raised his finger. Helping Lady Céline was her job. Oh Divine One, what had come over him?
The moment Céline steps into the nearest town, the infectious energy encompasses like a flower in full bloom. There are people to her left and right with smiles and words filling the air. Still, her attention is drawn to one place in particular. As she inches towards the cart full of colorful flowers, she is welcomed by their fresh and light scent. The large variety harbors a homely feeling, sparing a soft glance towards vibrant yellows and sparkling blues. She eyes its petals, drawing her shoulders back in contentment.
It made little difference whether Céline is to find herself crafting a corsage, boutonniere, or otherwise. For the moment, she merely takes in the scenery as a finger taps one of its petals. The sunny skies shine down on the ground below, glistening onto the flowers.
While she may arrived here alone, no longer is there solitude— Not when the petals call out to her and the welcomed face of Louis greets her.
"Hello, Louis. I would be delighted. Perhaps once we finish, you might spare a moment to help me gather a flower or two of my own? The thought of keeping one in my room is pleasant." How nice it might be to return, after a long day of studies, to a full blossom.
"I see you have hyacinth's— They are a lovely color." Céline gestures towards them with a light nod. "Their stems are long, but it allows us with more room. What in particular did you want to craft first?"
”Thank you, Lady Céline.” Louis started off his reply with a courteous thanks. He almost forgot how to talk to his liege with all the dazzling conversations he was part of nowadays (whether people were talking to him specifically or whether he was observing students chat from a distance).
“If you don’t mind indulging in my request, I was wondering whether it was possible to attach these hyacinths to the notes I made to thank the staff of Garreg Mach for their efforts this year.” Louis took one of the cards out of his breast pocket and showed the small hole he cut out in the corner of the paper.
“Unfortunately I myself seem to be in the possession of two left hands, though I am glad to take the opportunity to be able to spend time with you.” Louis said, already trying to fidget in one of the stems in the card.
Open Starter: Local guy has never been to a ball and has no idea how to plan for one but it's fine (probably)
[The Ethereal Ball is nigh! The planning committee is hard at work preparing for the second biggest event of the year and asks for volunteers to help make it happen! There's plenty that needs to be done, from picking out the menu to securing the supplies you need for the dance cards.]
The academy was beginning to buzz with excitement at the approaching ball, and though Henry had never been to one, he was just as excited. Or, perhaps it was the fact he had never been to one that made it so exciting. He had hardly any clue how they worked; did rich people just dress up and stand around and dance? How did they dance, anyways? He knew waltzing was a thing, but it never made much sense to him, and he never tried it anyways. How crowded would it be? Would they expect prim and proper behavior? Although he expected that to be true, he still was excited nonetheless.
He wasn't quite sure what was exciting about it, but he knew he was much more energetic than usual, and jumped at the prospect of helping put the ball together. He certainly wasn't no cook, and he knew for a fact that his palate was most likely different than the good ol' rich people, and knowing the good ol' rich people, they'd complain about it. So, helping with supplies it was! Dance cards to keep track of who you danced with...? How funny! That made absolutely zero sense to him, but hey, most nobility stuff didn't. Anyways, they would probably need string to hold them together, some nice paper, ink of course, and... hm. Whatever, he'd figure it out.
Heading on over to the marketplace, he skipped along as he looked around. Now where would supplies for these dance card thingies be? Probably not with the produce vendor, definitely not with the weapons vendor... maybe with those vendors who sold non-necessities? He knew they sold board games and books and such, so they probably had ink and paper at the very least, right? Heck, maybe they had string too! That was all Henry could really think of the booklets needing. Maybe he could find them there?
Louis stood at the vendor for non-necessities to see what he needed for planning the Ethereal Ball and dance cards were at the top of the list: Forging connections was the true main event on a ball, and dance cards ensured that these bonds were captured in a souvenir, rather than merely in Louis’ mind. They gave a small glimpse into the many conversations that occurred outside of Louis’ watchful eye, which gave the valet a wonderful chance to be fate’s little helper and fix up more matches.
For example, he saw a white-haired young man, with eyes almost as shut tight as his own, though Louis’ eyes tended to show their almond shape more. His clothes gave him the impression of a dark mage and he didn’t seem too old despite the white hair. A perfect match for someone li-. Louis decided to save it for the ball.
He invited the mage to join him with a wave, already holding out a sturdy piece of paper and a red lint for a first choice. “Good day, can I bother you with a question?” he said, sliding the paper and lint. “Do you think the color red suits this? There are no wrong answers here, just say what comes to mind.”
Upon noticing he was being waved to, he grinned and waved back, walking over. He looked at the paper and lint curiously, before saying, "I dunno much about colors, but it looks cool! It's the same color of blood!"
He didn't have much of a clue how colors were meant to go together; he always simply connected them to things he saw in real life. Forest greens and browns went together, and gray could help too, the trees and dirt and rocks coming to his mind. Red went well with almost everything, he thought; blood could get eeeeeverywhere, it wasn't picky. Black went well with everything too, in his opinion; the feathers of crows and ravens was always a great contrast to the red of a battlefield, or the gentle streams in the forest, or anywhere he could think of! And with the bright colors of fabric, who cared if they clashed? It was fun! Long story short... Henry was probably not the best person to ask about color combinations.
“Blood huh…” Well, one thing is for sure, Louis had not considered that before. This is why it was important to get the perspective of others. No idea how representative the lad’s opinion would be and even so, the man didn’t seem to mind the association with the color. That’s what you get for saying there are no wrong answers. “Interesting. Thanks for your input!” Louis said, putting down the red lint and patting it, as if thanking it for its duty. “Anything I can help you with in return?” he said, increasingly curious about this fella.
Louis was certainly right about Henry not minding the association, he seemed to like the idea quite a bit. He simply beamed in response and happily chirped, "No problemo! Always happy to help!" whilst rocking back and forth on his heels a bit.
He paused however to think of whether he needed anything else, but soon shook his head. "Anyways, I was trying to find some of the stuff for the dance-flier thingies anyways, actually! I've never been to a ball or anything like that before, soooo I have no clue what I'm doing," He shrugged, chuckling a bit as he looked back at the market stall.
“Dance cards huh…I found myself here looking for those actually! Don’t worry, balls are delightful and beneath all the formalities it’s really about chatting and eating, if you’re worried about the etiquette.” Louis reassured the white-trimmed lad. “Though, in spirit of this being the first ball of a lot of students here, maybe we should tone down on the rigidity of the etiquette.” Louis mused to no one in particular. A “loosy-goosier” approach certainly might help foster new friendships between nobles and commoners, rather than seperating the party by the lines of those who follow the social norm and those who mold their own.
“Actually, you never having been to a shindig like this just might be what we need here. I already have the supplies for a basic dance card here, but now that we’re here we might just find a more..alternative version.” he said, holding the regular stack of papers and lint in one hand and browsing unrelated ware in the other hand. Paintbrushes, red wool, stamps passed his eyes. “How do you show a connection in your world?”
He nodded along with Louis' explanation, but paused after a moment. Henry's eyes narrowed even more than usual as he thought, trying to think of the proper answer to the other's question.
"How do you show a connection...?" he mumbled quietly to himself. After a moment more, he just shrugged and said, "How do you show a connection? Aw, beans, I dunno! I'm no good with that touchy-feely stuff.
Quickly hopping back on another question, he asked, "You said something about an alternative version. Whaddya mean by that?" tilting his head slightly to the side as he spoke. He didn't want to start thinking too much about how human connections worked, that was weird to him. He'd personally rather talk about gore, or the next mission that might lead to bloodshed! However, he could compromise, and talk about the previous topic at hand instead. Win-win, in his mind.
Louis carefully studied the various gestures that seemed to pop out of the mage and chuckled along with his jokes. Or at least, he thought they were jokes. He did seem to detect some levity in Henry’s answer, but with the uncertainty in the air, Louis opted for a more polite chuckle rather than a hearty laugh.
“You see, I only know about dance cards as they are used in my homeland. Rather than to follow that procedure, however, I figured we could honor the various cultures and backgrounds present at Garreg Mach. By making a dance card that represents your homeland for example, people can learn more about your culture and customs. This way, the ball can also be a…crossroad of ideas, of some sorts, if you catch my drift.” Louis tried to explain his viewpoint as best as he could.
“Though, of course, I apologize if that is not your forte. I know plenty of cultures where talking about touchy-feely stuff is not encouraged myself.”
